Sidney Gottlieb's Secret: The CIA Program That Dosed Its Own

MK-Ultra was not a conspiracy theory. It was a funded, structured, institutionally protected operation — and this series tells the full story from the inside out. Episode one begins where the evidence begins: the night Frank Olson fell thirteen floors from a New York hotel window, nine days after being secretly dosed with LSD by his CIA colleagues at a Maryland retreat. Was it suicide? Was it something else? The forensic record, reopened in 1994, raised questions that were never fully answered in court. Behind Olson's death stood Sidney Gottlieb — the chemist who purchased the world's entire supply of LSD from Sandoz, funnelled CIA money to over eighty research institutions, and personally oversaw experiments on prisoners, psychiatric patients, and soldiers who never consented to any of it. When the program officially ended in 1973, Gottlieb destroyed 152 files. No one prosecuted him. This episode maps the architecture of MK-Ultra: how it was authorised, how it was concealed, and why it mattered. It introduces the key figures — Gottlieb, Olson, CIA handler Robert Lashbrook — and sets the stage for everything that follows: the San Francisco safe houses, Ewen Cameron's electroshock experiments at McGill, the 1977 Church Committee hearings, and the 2026 Congressional accountability push. If you want to understand how a democratic government ran a secret human experimentation programme for two decades, this is where the story starts. This episode includes AI-generated content.

Operation Midnight Climax: The CIA's Secret Drug Brothels

(00:00:00) Operation Midnight Climax: The CIA's Secret Drug Brothels (00:00:56) Operation Midnight Climax (00:02:26) The Contradiction at the Core (00:03:49) Sidney Gottlieb and the Architecture of MK-Ultra (00:05:16) Frank Olson (00:07:11) The Reach of the Program (00:08:36) Ken Kesey and the Unintended Consequence (00:09:46) The Destruction of Evidence (00:10:51) The Church Committee and 2026 (00:12:15) What White Actually Was George Hunter White was a celebrated federal narcotics agent by day and a CIA operative running drug-laced brothels by night. This episode goes deep inside Operation Midnight Climax — the most disturbing chapter of the MKUltra program — where sex workers lured unsuspecting men to a wired apartment on Telegraph Hill, their drinks spiked with LSD, their reactions catalogued behind one-way glass. At the centre of it all was Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA chemist who purchased the world's entire known supply of LSD, recruited researchers with ties to Nazi-era experimentation, and ran a covert human drug trial with no consent, no ethics board, and no accountability. Gottlieb issued the licence. White used it — enthusiastically, and without apparent remorse. A letter White wrote in retirement describes his years running the safe houses not with shame but with something disturbingly close to nostalgia. Then there is Frank Olson — a CIA biological warfare researcher who was secretly dosed with LSD at a Maryland work retreat in November 1953. Olson's psychological unravelling in the weeks that followed, his mounting doubts about the program, and his fatal fall from the tenth floor of a New York hotel raise questions that have never been fully answered. Accident, suicide, or something else? This episode traces the architecture of MKUltra's most audacious operations: who built them, who ran them, who suffered inside them, and how the culture of impunity that enabled White and Gottlieb survived for two decades before Congress finally started asking questions. Frank Olson's Fall: The Architecture of Unchecked Power Inside MKUltra

(00:00:00) Frank Olson's Fall: The Architecture of Unchecked Power Inside MKUltra (00:00:49) The Man with the Chemist's Mind (00:01:56) The LSD Purchase (00:02:51) Frank Olson's Window (00:04:29) Ewen Cameron and the McGill Experiments (00:06:02) The Midnight Climax Infrastructure (00:07:12) Universities, Prisons, and Front Organizations (00:08:22) The Destruction (00:09:36) The 2026 Hearings (00:10:51) What Gottlieb's License Actually Meant How does one government chemist get the authority to drug American citizens, fund torture experiments on psychiatric patients in another country, and walk away without a single criminal charge? This episode of MKUltra - The CIA Mind Control Program confronts that question directly — and traces the specific architecture of power that made it possible. Sidney Gottlieb joined the CIA's Technical Services Staff in 1951, armed with a biochemistry doctorate and the Cold War's most dangerous blank cheque. When CIA Director Allen Dulles formally authorised MKUltra in 1953, Gottlieb became its architect — running at least 150 research projects across universities, hospitals, prisons, and detention centres, almost entirely outside normal oversight. His first major move: spending $240,000 of CIA funds to purchase the world's entire known supply of LSD from Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz. The human cost was immediate. In November 1953, Gottlieb secretly dosed a group of scientists at a CIA retreat. One of them was Frank Olson, a civilian biological-weapons researcher. Nine days later, Olson fell from the thirteenth floor of a New York hotel. His death was ruled a suicide. His family wasn't told about the LSD for twenty-two years. A 1994 second autopsy found evidence of a blow to the head before the fall — a question that remains officially unanswered. The program also crossed borders. At McGill University in Montreal, psychiatrist Ewen Cameron — funded through CIA front organisations — subjected psychiatric patients to weeks of drug-induced sleep, looped audio messages, extreme electroshock, and sensory deprivation in pursuit of his theory of personality erasure. His patients had come to hospital seeking treatment. Many lost years of memory. Many never recovered. This episode examines how institutional complicity, Cold War paranoia, and deliberate secrecy combined to let it all happen — and why accountability remains incomplete to this day. Dosed Without Consent: The Victims Inside Operation Midnight Climax

(00:00:00) Dosed Without Consent: The Victims Inside Operation Midnight Climax (00:01:29) How Operation Midnight Climax Actually Worked (00:03:25) Who Were the Victims (00:05:17) The Question of Consent and the Nuremberg Problem (00:06:45) Frank Olson and the Limits of Institutional Loyalty (00:09:01) The Destruction of the Record (00:10:46) The 2026 Hearings and What They Found (00:12:27) What We Owe the Unnamed They walked into an ordinary-looking apartment on Chestnut Street and never knew they were inside a CIA experiment. Operation Midnight Climax ran for eight years, dosing unwitting men with LSD behind a two-way mirror while federal narcotics agent George Hunter White watched and took notes. When CIA Director Richard Helms ordered MKUltra's files destroyed in 1973, the identities of most victims went with them — a deliberate erasure that has never been fully undone. This episode reconstructs what we know about the men targeted in those San Francisco safe houses: who they were, why they were chosen, and what the targeting logic reveals about the program's ethics. The pattern is damning. Like MKUltra's other sub-projects — prisoners dosed at a federal penitentiary in Atlanta, psychiatric patients subjected to electroshock by Ewen Cameron at McGill University — the Midnight Climax operation deliberately sought out people with diminished power, diminished credibility, and diminished legal recourse. We also examine the Nuremberg Code problem. Established in 1949 as a direct response to Nazi medical atrocities, the Code's first principle is unambiguous: voluntary consent is absolutely essential. Operation Midnight Climax began six years later. The CIA knew. And it proceeded anyway — consulting individuals connected to the very wartime experimentation programs that made the Code necessary in the first place. Sidney Gottlieb signed off. The institution funded it. And more than fifty years on, most victims have received no acknowledgment, no apology, and no compensation. This is their chapter. One Flew Over the CIA: How MKUltra Accidentally Built the Counterculture

(00:00:00) One Flew Over the CIA: How MKUltra Accidentally Built the Counterculture (00:00:49) Kesey Before the Legend (00:02:01) One Flew Over, Then Wrote It Down (00:03:43) The Bus, the Pranksters, and the Acid Tests (00:05:02) The Counterculture as Unintended Consequence (00:06:29) What Kesey Actually Knew (00:08:12) The Program's Cultural Ledger (00:09:48) Kesey's Place in the Reckoning In 1959, a young Oregon writer named Ken Kesey signed up for paid drug experiments at the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital — never knowing the CIA was running the program. What the architects of MKUltra couldn't predict was that they were handing the seeds of their own undoing to one of the twentieth century's most influential voices. This episode follows the chain of consequence that began in a government experiment room and ended on the streets of San Francisco. Kesey's sessions with LSD and mescaline didn't produce a compliant subject — they produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, a novel whose indictment of institutional power over individual consciousness mirrored exactly what MKUltra was doing in secret. The parallel was not lost on a generation already beginning to question Washington. From there, the story moves fast: the Merry Pranksters, Neal Cassady behind the wheel of a Day-Glo bus, the Acid Tests of 1965, the Grateful Dead, and LSD spreading at a scale no intelligence program had ever modeled. The CIA had distributed the drug to one man. That man distributed the experience to a generation. The episode examines the structural irony at the heart of the program's legacy — a Cold War mind control operation that helped create the largest domestic resistance movement to Cold War government overreach in American history. Covert operations designed to expand state power instead produced millions of citizens radically suspicious of it. This is the chapter where MKUltra stops being only a crime story and becomes a story about how power loses control of its own tools. This episode includes AI-generated content.

Erased at McGill: How Cameron's Patients Became CIA Test Subjects

(00:00:00) Erased at McGill: How Cameron's Patients Became CIA Test Subjects (00:01:17) Ewen Cameron and the Allen Memorial Institute (00:02:50) The CIA's Invisible Hand at McGill (00:04:25) The Patients Who Had No Idea (00:05:32) The Aftermath and the Legal Fight (00:06:51) Cameron's Place in the Larger MK-Ultra Architecture (00:07:58) The 1977 Revelations and What Followed (00:08:57) The 2026 Hearings and the Questions Still Open (00:09:59) The Legacy We're Still Reckoning With Ewen Cameron was one of the most decorated psychiatrists in the world — president of the American Psychiatric Association, a founding figure of the World Psychiatric Association, and a consulting expert at the Nuremberg trials, where he sat in judgment of Nazi doctors who had experimented on human beings without consent. Then he went home and did something remarkably similar. Cameron's ward at the Allan Memorial Institute at McGill University became a laboratory for one of MKUltra's darkest chapters. His 'depatterning' technique subjected patients to massive doses of electroshock therapy — sometimes more than a hundred sessions — combined with weeks of drug-induced sleep using barbiturates. The goal was psychological erasure: strip the mind of its existing patterns and then implant new ones through a process he called 'psychic driving,' looping recorded suggestions through headphones for up to sixteen hours a day. His patients had not volunteered for experiments. They had come to him with depression, anxiety, and everyday struggles. They were not told the CIA was funding their treatment through a front organisation called the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology. They were not told anything at all. What they lost was devastating: years of memory, the names of their children, the ability to perform basic daily tasks. The CIA got data. The patients got broken minds. This episode traces Cameron's methods, Sidney Gottlieb's invisible hand at McGill, the partial destruction of records by Richard Helms in 1973, the survivors' landmark class action lawsuit against the CIA in the 1980s, and the long, unfinished fight for accountability that echoes into the 2026 Congressional hearings. Congress vs. the CIA: What the Files Destroyed in 1973 Actually Revealed

(00:00:00) Congress vs. the CIA: What the Files Destroyed in 1973 Actually Revealed (00:00:53) Cold War Fear and the License It Granted (00:02:20) Sidney Gottlieb and the Architecture of MK-Ultra (00:03:41) Operation Midnight Climax (00:05:17) Frank Olson and the Window on Seventh Avenue (00:07:12) Ewen Cameron and the McGill Experiments (00:08:42) Ken Kesey and the Accident of Counterculture (00:09:46) The 1973 Destruction Order (00:11:00) What Survived and What the Church Committee Found (00:12:27) 2026 and the Accountability Hearings (00:14:07) The Line That Runs to Now Before you know the full story, 1973 looks like a clean ending. The CIA shut down MKUltra, ordered the files destroyed, and closed the chapter. Here's what it actually was: a cover-up with no real consequences — and a paper trail that, even after the shredding, turned out to be far larger than anyone admitted. This episode pulls back to examine the mechanics of concealment at the heart of the CIA's twenty-year mind control program. We trace the Cold War fear that handed Sidney Gottlieb a blank check in 1953 — when Allen Dulles authorised MKUltra on the logic that the Soviets already had something, and urgency meant skipping ethics entirely. Gottlieb, the chemist with a PhD and a remarkable gift for moral compartmentalisation, purchased the world's entire supply of LSD from Sandoz for $240,000 and turned it into an operational weapon against unwitting Americans. We revisit Operation Midnight Climax — the San Francisco safe houses wired with one-way mirrors, the sex workers hired by federal narcotics agent George Hunter White, the men dosed without consent while White watched and drank martinis. We return to Frank Olson, the CIA scientist who did not know he was drinking LSD at a Maryland retreat and was dead three weeks later on Seventh Avenue. And we examine what the 1977 Church Committee found, what the 2026 Congressional accountability hearings are still trying to find, and what it means that the question of who destroyed what — and why — remains unanswered more than half a century later. Sidney Gottlieb's Reckoning: When Congress Finally Faced MKUltra

(00:00:00) Sidney Gottlieb's Reckoning: When Congress Finally Faced MKUltra (00:00:51) How It Started and Who Built It (00:02:32) The Experiments in Practice (00:04:33) Frank Olson (00:06:09) The Unintended Legacy (00:07:18) The Files That Were Destroyed (00:08:23) The Church Committee and What It Found (00:10:10) The 2026 Hearings (00:11:45) What the Reckoning Left Unresolved What does a government owe its citizens after twenty years of secretly poisoning them? In 1977, the Church Committee forced Congress to confront that question — and the answers that emerged from the Senate chambers were more disturbing than almost anyone had anticipated. This episode traces the full architecture of MKUltra: from Sidney Gottlieb's blank-check mandate to control the human mind, to the CIA's bulk purchase of the world's entire LSD supply, to the brothels of Operation Midnight Climax where unwitting men were dosed and observed through one-way mirrors in San Francisco. It follows Ewen Cameron's electroshock experiments on psychiatric patients at McGill University in Montreal — people admitted for depression and anxiety who emerged unable to remember their own lives. And it returns to Frank Olson, the CIA scientist secretly dosed with LSD at a Maryland retreat who fell from a New York hotel window nine days later. At every turn, the programme exploited the Cold War fear that the Soviets were pulling ahead in the race to weaponise the human mind. That fear became the justification for violating the Nuremberg Code — four years after the world had agreed such violations could never happen again. The Church Committee hearings of 1977 cracked the story open. But with the bulk of MKUltra's files already shredded on CIA Director Richard Helms's orders, the full reckoning never came. This episode asks why — and what the 2026 Congressional accountability hearings are still trying to uncover. This episode includes AI-generated content.
