    Are kids specializing in one sport too early? In this episode of Beyond the Scoreboard, I talk about why I think playing multiple sports can be one of the best things for young athletes. Different sports build different skills, different movements, and different kinds of confidence—and sometimes more training in one sport isn’t actually what a kid needs. I also share a couple real examples from kids I coach and what I’ve seen firsthand as both a coach and a parent. This isn’t about saying specialization is always wrong. It’s about asking whether we’re rushing kids into it before they’ve had the chance to just be athletes. If you have a young athlete, this one is worth thinking about.

    Playing time might be one of the hardest conversations in youth sports. When your kid is working hard, showing up, doing everything asked of them — but still isn’t getting the minutes, innings, or opportunities they want — what should a parent expect? And what does a coach owe that player? In Episode 3, we talk about the difference between deserving playing time and deserving an opportunity. Hard work doesn’t automatically guarantee a starting spot, but every kid deserves honesty, coaching, a clear path forward, and a legitimate chance to earn more. This one is for the parents frustrated on the sidelines, the coaches making difficult lineup decisions, and the kids still fighting for their role. Because playing time may have to be earned — but opportunity should always be there.
