Unfiltered & Unhinged: The Toxic Body Talk Episode w/ Adella Afadi

TW: Dieting, Body Image, Disordered Eating MindsetsSkip it if today’s not the day 🤍 Two friends. Zero filter. One very honest conversation about our bodies. We talk about the 2pm “I want to be skinny” text, the calorie spreadsheet that shocked one of us, gaining weight after the baby, why one of us only feels beautiful when pregnant, and how you can hate the beauty standard and still be stuck in it. It’s chaotic, it’s messy, and yes, it’s toxic. We know. If you’ve ever thought “it would all be fine if I was skinny,” this one’s for you. Is it just us? We really hope not. Picked Second: Does Order Matter in Dating?

Have you ever been picked second? A guy asks your friend for her number, she says no, and then he comes over to you. In this episode of Attempting to Participate, I get into why that stings, and why I wish it didn’t. It started when my friend Manuela said something that floored me: “I don’t care if I’m picked first or second as long as I’m picked last.” I talk about why I care so much, what attraction actually tells us, why choosing someone based on looks alone means working with incomplete data, and what changes when the approach is done with respect and curiosity. I also share a story about being set up with a guy who liked my friend, and why men who think they’re “second choice” probably aren’t seeing it the way she does. Plus, a quick update on the five pounds I gained from a five hour hike, and my full ACOTAR obsession (no spoilers, but my DMs are open). Have you been picked second and ended up in a long-term relationship with that person? I’d love to hear how it went. Leave a comment or find me on Substack. Single In Your 30s w/ Tosin Alabi

My friend Tosin is here and we did not hold back. This week we're talking about being single in your 30s, which means: Tosin's very detailed, very specific fantasy of how she's going to meet her person (there's a gallery, there's a scent, there's plantain and egg involved), why she finally came off Hinge, what our friendships have taught us about ourselves that no situationship ever could, and a firm message to all the boys who come in at a hundred percent energy and then just... disappear. We also get into feminine energy, learning you're not actually perfect, and whether we'd genuinely be okay if marriage never came. Spoiler: we both surprised ourselves. Luteal Rage, Cooking Every ‘Mother Loving’ Day & Love

This week I’m talking about three things that are consuming my life in no particular order of importance: the protein crisis that is my daily meal plan, the luteal phase and what it is doing to my body, my mind, and frankly my soul, and the article I am thinking about writing but am not sure I actually want to write. Because once you open that door, it’s open. And I don’t know if I’m ready for what comes out. No solutions. Just chaos. Thanks for listening. You’re Not Special w/ Frances Kehinde.

This week I have on my oldest friend, Frances Kehinde. I wrote You're Not Special with her in mind and naturally she had thoughts. We get into USPs, situationships, and why the anointing cannot be given to you by someone else. Enjoy! Get full access to Attempting to participate at kemirufai.substack.com/subscribe

    Dodgy Dentists & Friendship Breakups

Welcome to the podcast. I wasn’t sure I was going to do this, and then I did it anyway, which feels very on brand. This first episode is a bit of everything: how I am (complicated), why I haven’t been to the dentist in longer than I’m willing to admit, and the Substack I’m currently terrified to write about losing three friends and not knowing if I’m the problem. No conclusions. Just where I’m at. Come in. Get full access to Attempting to participate at kemirufai.substack.com/subscribe
