Dead Air Valley explores the strange history, local legends, forgotten places, and unsettling stories of the Hudson Valley and the regions around it. From Sleepy Hollow and old river towns to neighboring valleys, back roads, abandoned landmarks, and the people who shaped them, each episode finds something worth bringing back into the light. Hosted by a rotating group of voices, with occasional noir-style narration, Dead Air Valley moves between atmospheric storytelling, local history, conversation, and timely discoveries. Episodes may be short, long, solo, or roundtable, but each begins with one question: what's still waiting in the dead air?

Dead Air Valley: "The Moose on the Interstate"

A large bull moose was caught on video near the interchange of Interstate 684 and 84 in Brewster, eastern Putnam County, this week. Connecticut Meteorologist Jack Drake shared a viewer's video of the animal. Moose are the largest land mammal in New York State, native to it, weighing between 500 and 1,200 pounds and standing up to six feet at the shoulder. Most live in the Adirondacks and the Taconic Highlands; this is only the second area sighting reported in 2026, with the first in the Pawling area. The sighting falls inside the October-through-December peak breeding window, when moose wander well outside their usual range. If you are driving in the valley this season, NYSDOT guidance is worth knowing: slow down when you see a deer or moose near the roadside, because the animal may bolt into the road without warning; expect another animal behind the first; and if one runs in front of your vehicle, brake firmly but do not swerve. Full NYSDOT deer-and-moose season guidance is available at the New York State Department of Transportation website. Sources: Hudson Valley Country, Mid-Hudson News Network, NYSDOT.

Dead Air Valley: "The Hamlet That Put Its Ghosts, and Its Saucers, on Main Street"

This week on Dead Air Valley, Silas Van Wyck visits Pine Bush, a farming hamlet of 1,659 people in the Town of Crawford, Orange County, billed by the Haunted History Trail of New York State as the UFO Capital of the East Coast. From the 1980s boom in alleged sightings to a Main Street institution with numbered exhibits, a MUFON collaboration, and an alien abduction photo-op, Pine Bush turned the unexplained into a very organized local fact. Two Haunted History Lantern Tour dates remain this October. The tour is guided by lantern through the hamlet's haunted locations, with findings from paranormal author Linda Zimmermann and Pine Bush historians, and ends with Victorian tea and dessert. Pine Bush UFO and Paranormal Museum 86 Main Street, Pine Bush, NY 12566 Phone: (845) 524-4272 Email: pinebushmuseum@townofcrawford.org Remaining Lantern Tour Dates: Saturday, October 24 and Friday, October 30 Start time: 9:00 PM at the museum Advance booking required online Approximately two hours, largely outdoors, weather dependent No photos, videos, or recording permitted Sources: The Pine Bush UFO and Paranormal Museum (pinebushmuseum.com), Haunted History Trail of New York State, Hudson Valley Magazine.

Dead Air Valley: "The 'Accidental' Deaths in the Tavern Basement"

In Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, the county historian is taking a roomful of diners into the basement of Foster's Coach House Tavern to read the official record of how their neighbors died by accident. On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 6 PM, Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III leads a Historic Tavern Trail: Halloween Edition program on "accidental" deaths, including drownings and falls, drawn from the Dutchess County Ancient Documents Collection, the surviving court filings from 1721 to 1889, now 167,000 pages online. Foster's Coach House Tavern, 6411 Montgomery Street, Rhinebeck, NY 12572, phone 845-876-8052. Dinner reservations before or after are recommended, per the listing; no ticket price or registration term was stated in the listing. The archive is free to search at dutchessny.gov/ancientdocuments. Silas Van Wyck tells it straight: Wally Foster and the equestrian tavern, Tatum and the Tavern Trail he built, the inquisition form behind the word accidental, and the tavern records that live in the same files. Dead Air Valley: "The Eight-Sided House and the Lady in White"

In Irvington, Westchester County, the eight-sided Armour-Stiner Octagon House at 45 West Clinton Avenue is staging its own ghost story. Author Carl Carmer lived in the house from 1946 to 1976 and wrote the Lady in White tale of a Hudson steamboat disaster. This fall the house performs that story as an immersive tour through its own rooms, October 16 to November 1, tickets $58, followed by the Remember You Must Die Memento Mori exhibition. Silas Van Wyck tells it straight: Fowler's octagon idea, the Armour and Stiner house, the fragrant ghost that followed the Carmers from Manhattan, and Carmer's full story of the elopement, the steamboat race, and the boiler explosion at the Palisades. Dead Air Valley: "The Society That Has Caught No One in 230 Years"

In Red Hook, Dutchess County, a society formed on October 10, 1796 to catch horse thieves is still meeting 230 years later. About 100 riders pay $5 a year and gather on the first Tuesday of October. The popular account says there is no record of it ever catching a horse thief, which a past president explained in 1990 as thieves being too terrified to try. Silas Van Wyck tells it straight: the 1796 bulletin, the deterrent and insurance model, the Klose barn meetings, and the archive clippings found by The Daily Catch that complicate the legend, including an 1888 conviction, a 1936 recovery, a 1941 hobby horse payout, and the 1955 report whose riders had no horse. Dead Air Valley: "Kingston Burned"

On October 16, 1777, British troops under General John Vaughan burned more than 300 buildings in Kingston, New York, then the newly established capital of New York State, in a matter of hours. Today is the 249th anniversary. Silas Van Wyck tells the story straight: the capital that lasted months, the militia away at Saratoga, the stone buildings of the Stockade District that survived, the rebuilding, and the four day Burning of Kingston Commemoration, October 15 to 18, with reenactments, walking tours, the Capital to Capital 5K from Kingston to Hurley, and tonight's Black Patriots program at the Old Dutch Church, 272 Wall Street. Dead Air Valley: "The General Came Back"

A bronze statue of George Washington at Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site in Newburgh was taken down in March 2020 for a scabbard repair that was finished by May 2020. It did not come back for more than six years. Silas Van Wyck tells the story of the long absence: the 1887 statue modeled from Washington's life mask, its earlier departures from the Tower of Victory, the multi-year rebuilding of the site around its empty pedestal, the Newburgh artist across the street who joked that the president had gone out for a cleaning, and the quiet return in late September 2026. The repair took two months. The return took a rebuilt site. Dead Air Valley: "The Curse List at Ballston Spa"

Double M Haunted Hayrides in Ballston Spa has been frightening people on purpose since 1991. This October, the attraction says a guest pushed past one of its actresses, took a prop, and left with it. Double M answered in public, not with a stern warning alone, but with a list of small lifelong curses wished on that guest: a pillow warm on both sides, damp socks, flat soda, and actors in every future haunted house who know exactly who they are. Silas Van Wyck works the plain strangeness of etiquette enforcement at a haunted attraction in peak season: who the rules are for, what actors can and cannot do back, and why a joke travels farther than a sign at the gate.
