Why AI Won't Replace Lawyers | Nandan Subramaniam

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Why do some lawyers get fired and then build a better business than the firm that let them go? I spoke with Nandan Subramaniam, principal at Zed Law, who runs a fully remote firm from a farm in the Northern Rivers while advising Parachute on where AI actually helps lawyers, and where it doesn't. Zed has automated around 80% of its internal processes with AI, but Nandan draws a hard line on two things: never using AI for legal research, and never using it for strategy. Get either wrong and you end up with hallucinated case law in front of a client, or a compliance-mindset AI missing the creative, grey area thinking that wins cases. We cover: Why he won't let AI touch legal research or strategyThe "hustle lawyer" system Zed built for lawyers considering starting their own firmWhy AI is producing more legal workThe confidentiality questionWhy he thinks the future is more boutique and solo firmsHis ` piece of advice for any lawyer thinking about going out on their ownWhat struck me most was how deliberate the line is between automation and judgement. Zed isn't trying to automate the lawyer out of the job, it's trying to free up the human parts that actually matter to clients. AI makes bad lawyers worse

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Daniel Lord-Doyle co-founded Mary Technology after watching his co-founder Rohan struggle through his first weeks as a lawyer, buried under documents with no time to actually help the client in front of him. Mary started as a glorified recorder for client meetings. It's now a fact-extraction engine that litigation teams use to work through hundreds of thousands of pages without missing the one line that matters. We get into the "negative space problem" (how do you know what the AI missed), why adversarial review has to happen at every stage rather than just at the end, and a genuinely alarming Wharton study on cognitive surrender, people trusting a wrong AI answer 80% of the time, even when they're being paid to get it right. Daniel also makes the case for why he thinks the legal industry ends up with more lawyers, not fewer, once AI properly lands. Oh, and there's a solid ten minutes on Birmingham secretly being Mordor. We dive into: * Why lawyers are about to become more valuable * How to prove AI reviewed everything and didn't ignore all the hard bits * Adversarial review throughout the matter lifecycle * People trusting AI's wrong answers even when $$$ is on the line * Why general-purpose AI is roughly 100x more expensive and 100x lower quality than point solutions * Why AI means we'll need more lawyers in five years Chapters: 0:00 Cold open: fewer lawyers, cognitive surrender 0:51 Welcome and growing up in Birmingham 3:21 The cello years and Tolkien's Birmingham 7:15 Durham hustles and first sales jobs 12:17 The PowerPoint that moved them to Australia 16:26 How Mary was born: Rohan's aunty and fact chaos 18:29 From transcription button to fact extraction engine 25:54 The negative space problem 29:38 Adversarial review and self-healing AI 34:20 Why niche AI beats general AI for legal work 41:02 Where legal practice goes in five years 46:28 Will AI mean fewer lawyers? Diverging views 50:07 Bad AI legal advice, real cases, and shadow AI in firms 55:16 AI and the next generation of lawyers 58:11 The Wharton cognitive surrender study 1:01:08 What's next for Mary: Austin HQ and brand growth Follow Dave LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daveberner/ X: https://x.com/dave_or_dead YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@dave_or_dead Website: https://daveberner.me Follow Dan LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mary-technology-dan/ Mary: https://www.marytechnology.com Parachute Website: https://goparachute.ai
