Ep. 10 | The Best Way to Keep Advent (Without Skipping Ahead to Christmas)

Halloween is over, you guys, and the whole world wants to skip straight to Christmas, but in our house we celebrate Advent during Advent and Christmas during Christmas (and get 12 days of it instead of just one). In this episode I'm sharing the five things we do to keep Advent, from finishing the Christmas shopping before it even starts to waiting until Christmas Eve to trim the tree, plus three things we don't do, because we're not Scrooges. If you usually reach December 25 already worn out, start small this year and keep whatever works for your family. ⚪️ THIS CHANNEL Kendra Tierney Norton, mother of ten, turns Catholic All Year's liturgical living into a weekly show that shows real families exactly how to bring feast days, prayer, and tradition into ordinary home life. ⚪️ CREDITS Hosted by: Kendra Tierney Norton Produced by: Arcadia Digital ⚪️ BUY MY BOOKS My book The Catholic All Year Compendium walks you through the whole liturgical year, feast by feast, with the actual food, prayers, and traditions we use at home, and The Catholic All Year Prayer Companion picks up the daily prayer side of things. Ep. 9 | How to Talk to Your Kids About Death (the Catholic Way)

Talking to kids about death can feel like something to put off as long as possible, you guys, but the Church gives us a whole Hallowtide to do it gently, and even with a little fun. In this episode I'm sharing how our family uses Halloween, All Saints, and All Souls to teach our kids about memento mori, heaven, and purgatory, from soul cakes and cemetery visits to writing the names of our loved ones on a candle at dinner, and why praying for the dead has been such a blessing for my children since losing their dad. Ep. 8 | Should Catholic Kids Have Phones?

None of my minor kids have smartphones, you guys, and we have a rotary phone with a cord on the living room wall (just to really commit to this thing). In this episode I'm sharing what didn't work for us (one shared iPad taught us a lot) and the plan we use now: no personal screens under 13, a locked-down Kindle at 13, a flip phone at 16, and the choice of an iPhone and social media at 18. It's not the easy road, but it's turned out to be one of our all-time best parenting decisions, and if you're thinking about it, I'd say do it. Ep. 7 | Should Catholic Families Avoid Video Games? (Here's What We Do)

St. Carlo Acutis, patron saint of the internet, chose to play video games for just one hour a week (so far none of my ten kids has inherited that particular virtue), so you guys, we've had to come up with some family rules. In this episode I'm sharing how we handle video games, TV, and movies in our house: no screens alone, nothing until schoolwork and chores are done, and the outbursts that get the console switched off and everybody sent outside. It's not the only way to do it, but it's worked for us from toddlers all the way up to kids in their 20s, and I hope it helps as you make these decisions in your own home. Ep. 6 | The Real Catholic History of Halloween

Catholics made up Halloween, you guys, and almost every attack on it over the centuries (from the Puritans to one fundamentalist with a printing empire and nearly a billion tracts) has come down to it being too Catholic. In this episode I'm digging into where the ghosts, skulls, and jack-o'-lanterns really come from, why my family still trick-or-treats, and how to keep the vigil of All Saints the old way, with fasting, the Vigil Mass, and spooky (meat-free) mac and cheese. You don't have to celebrate Halloween, but you definitely don't have to be scared out of it. Ep. 5 | What to Do When Your Kids Don't Want to Pray

My own dad wasn't Catholic when I was growing up, and it took twenty-five years of my mom quietly praying for him, with zero arguing or guilt trips, before he signed himself up for RCIA seemingly out of nowhere while I was in college. In this episode I talk through what actually works when a spouse, a toddler, or a teenager isn't on board with family prayer, including what I call the Saint Monica method for the tough teenage years (it's basically the reluctant spouse method, but with more crying). Ep. 4 | We've Been Beating Up a Devil Piñata for 18 Years (Here's Why)

Our Michaelmas piñata is turning 18 this year, it's the same red cardboard devil Grandad built for our very first feast day back in 2008, and the kids still get to whack him with wooden swords until the candy spills out. In this episode I'm telling the whole story, how one overwhelming liturgical living book sat with me for nine months before I finally tried it, and how that turned into Cornish game hens, blackberry folklore, and a party we look forward to all year. If a wacky feast day tradition still feels like too much for your family, I promise you can start small and it can still become the thing everyone loves most. Ep. 3 | What I Taught My Kids About Suffering, Before I Knew What Was Coming

When my husband Jim was diagnosed, someone told me to wait to worry, to hold off until there was actually something in front of me to worry about right now, and that one phrase carried me through sixteen years of his illness and it's still what I teach my kids today. In this episode I talk about raising children who can hold onto hope even when prayers aren't answered the way we want (because despair is the real danger, not disappointment) and why that's a skill worth building in them now, before they need it. Ep. 2 | How We Actually Pray as a Catholic Family

Our family rosary happens a lot more often in the car (or the hot tub, not going to lie) than kneeling reverently in front of a crucifix, and that's kind of the whole point of this episode. I walk through the four little rules that actually keep prayer alive in our house, starting with the Morning Offering I say before I even get out of bed, because a perfect prayer life would be lovely, but an imperfect one that actually happens beats it every time. ⚪️ THIS CHANNEL Kendra Tierney Norton, mother of ten, turns Catholic All Year's liturgical living into a weekly show that shows real families exactly how to bring feast days, prayer, and tradition into ordinary home life. ⚪️ CREDITS Hosted by: Kendra Tierney NortonProduced by: Arcadia Digital ⚪️ BUY MY BOOKS My book The Catholic All Year Compendium walks you through the whole liturgical year, feast by feast, with the actual food, prayers, and traditions we use at home, and The Catholic All Year Prayer Companion picks up the daily prayer side of things. Ep. 1 | How to Start Living the Liturgical Year (Even If You've Never Tried)

Liturgical living isn't a Pinterest aesthetic, you guys, it's just letting the Church's calendar shape your ordinary Tuesday, and in this episode I'm breaking down exactly where to start: the three things every family already does (food, prayer, and conversation) and how to Catholicize them one feast day at a time (no turduckens required). If you've ever felt too overwhelmed, too under-prepared, or too intimidated to jump into the liturgical year with your kids, this is your 4-step starter kit to begin today.
