HASSL

Real conversations. Big sister energy. Serious topics, without the doom scroll. HASSL’d is a podcast about women’s safety - and what it will actually take to make things better. We’re taking the conversations women have been having for years out of the group chat and bringing everyone into them, especially men. Through honest conversations, lived experiences, influential guests and some funny moments too, we look at all the issues that sit under the umbrella of women’s safety - from harassment, relationships and dating to masculinity, misogyny, allyship and the culture that shapes how we treat each other. This isn’t another podcast telling women what to avoid, where not to go or how to keep themselves safe. We want to shift the conversation towards understanding the problem, questioning what we’ve come to accept as normal and helping more people, especially men, recognise the role they can play in changing it. Expect red flags, listener dilemmas, surprising research, different perspectives, good news, bad news and plenty of laughs along the way. Because women’s safety isn’t just a women’s issue - and change needs everyone in the conversation. Come for the conversation. Leave seeing something differently.

Why does being a happy, single woman make some men so angry? | Claira Hermet

“I’m single, I’ve never been married, I don’t have kids… but I’m happy.” Apparently, being a woman in your 40s, single, childfree and actually enjoying your life is enough to seriously upset some men online… This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by broadcaster, presenter and self-love and confidence coach Claira Hermet (@missclairahermet). We talk about the reaction Claira received when she started sharing her life online, why women are still sold such a narrow idea of what happiness is supposed to look like, and how much of what we think we want – marriage, children, the whole prescribed life plan – is actually ours. Claira describes the backlash just simply saying that she was single and happy… and why that response made her want to talk about it even more. We also get into women in male-dominated industries, body image and confidence, grief and learning to build a life you genuinely want. Claira shares the story behind her preventative double mastectomy – and what the experience taught her about how much femininity and women’s worth are still so tied to our bodies. PLUS: what’s been winding us up as always; Green Light, Red Light on feminism, work spouses, Snapchat, “natural women” and keeping your surname; a very on-theme Guess Again; and Claira’s big sibling advice. Note: This episode includes discussion of bereavement, cancer, preventative mastectomy, eating disorders and sexual harassment. From 23:07 to 24:38, Claira discusses her experiences of bereavement - and overall, there is discussion of the above throughout. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence. ---- HASSL’d is sponsored by Pod. Can better male friendships make women safer? | Tom Stroud & Dan Shrigley

“Why is it strange for two guys to go on a man-date?” This was SUCH a hilarious yet thought-provoking episode – we can’t wait to share it with you! This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by Tom Stroud (@stroudtom) and Dan Shrigley (@danshrigley), founders of Shoulder to Shoulder – a community helping men make friends, talk properly and rethink some of the ideas they’ve been handed about masculinity. You might also recognise Tom from Love Is Blind UK – although apparently he never mentions it... Tom and Dan share how a viral clip about Tom’s “feminine traits” led to a coffee date, which turned into Shoulder to Shoulder... and from there, we get into male friendship, loneliness, and what happens when men don’t have healthy places to connect – including when that loneliness turns into resentment towards women. We also talk about what “good men” can actually do beyond simply knowing they’re good men, whether better male friendships could play a part in making women safer, and why men need spaces where they can actually talk to each other. Somewhere in amongst all that, there’s also what's been winding us up; a chaotic green light, red light; some surprising stats on masculinity in Guess Again; two very different pieces of big sibling advice and a perfectly normal first-date screening technique (according to some). Note: This episode includes discussion of depression, mental health, violence against women and sexual harassment. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence. ---- HASSL’d is sponsored by Pod. Women’s safety, politics and the stories we’re sold | Femi Oluwole

“If it’s not about keeping women safe… what are you actually here for?” What happens when women’s safety becomes part of a much bigger political argument – and how do you actually get through to someone when you completely disagree? This week, Natasha and Carla are joined by Femi Oluwole (@femi_sorry ) – political activist, creator and street interviewer, known for taking some of the biggest political arguments off the internet and talking them through face-to-face. We get into the political narratives that form around women’s safety, how to challenge someone without immediately shutting down the conversation, and what Femi has learnt from speaking to people whose politics are worlds apart from his own. We also talk about algorithms rewarding outrage over nuance, media literacy, why what men say when they’re around other men matters, and Femi’s own experiences – including how power and physical safety can completely change the way the same experience is understood. PLUS: what’s been winding us up (from the heavy to the light stuff), Green Light, Red Light on politics, cats, terrible repliers and people who clap when the plane lands (!), and Femi’s big sibling advice. Note: This episode includes discussion of childhood abuse, sexual harassment and violence. From 24:24-28:03, Femi discusses his experiences of abuse and safety in sexual situations. Why women’s safety can’t be women’s responsibility | Amy Watson

“We so often put the responsibility on the people most affected by that issue to solve it.” Why are women still being taught how to stay safe instead of everyone else being taught how to make the world safer? For our very first episode of HASSL’d, Natasha and Carla are joined by the woman who started it all: HASSL founder Amy Watson. We get into how HASSL began, why prevention and education have always been at the heart of the mission, and why men have to be part of the conversation if anything is actually going to change. We also talk about the things we were taught to accept as girls, what men can do when women aren’t in the room, the tiny ways misogyny shows up in everyday life, and why inviting men into the conversation doesn’t mean making it all about them. PLUS: what’s been winding us up (there's always something), our first Green Light, Red Light, some fairly horrifying Gen Z statistics in Guess Again, and Amy’s big sibling advice. Note: This episode includes discussion of stalking, harassment and sexual violence. We’ll always give you a warning before the heavier sections so you can protect your peace if you need to. Natasha’s experience of being stalked is discussed from 12:17–13:51. HASSL’d contains mature content, including occasional strong language and conversations around harassment, misogyny and violence. --- HASSL’d is sponsored by Pod.
