The Cost of Success

Paul Salter

What did your success cost you? The Cost of Success is for founders, CEOs, entrepreneurs, and ambitious professionals who have achieved every traditional measure of success on the outside—but are quietly struggling with what it has cost them on the inside. Hosted by high-performance mindset coach and credentialed hypnotherapist Paul Salter, each episode explores the hidden psychological, emotional, and relational costs of achievement through candid conversations about the pressure to keep achieving, the inability to slow down, emotional repression, identity, relationships, sacrifice, and regret. You'll hear what highly successful people wish they had understood sooner, what they would do differently, and how their definition of success has changed along the way. Because what you achieve is only part of the story. What it required of you is the part we rarely talk about—and recognizing it now gives you the opportunity to make what matters most matter now.

I Built My Family a Better Life, But Wasn't There to Enjoy It With Them | Tom Warner

What if everything you're working so hard to give your family isn't what they actually want most from you? Tom Warner learned early that if he wanted something, he needed to work for it. That belief helped him build a highly successful career in financial services—but it also contributed to decades of 60-, 70-, even 90-hour workweeks, missed dinners with his children, distance in his marriage, and a tendency to use work as an escape from the parts of life he couldn't control. Then painful experiences with his daughter and the loss of his mother forced Tom to confront a difficult question: What good is spending your life preparing for tomorrow if doing so costs you the people and moments you only have today? In this conversation, Tom wrestles openly with regret, vulnerability, fatherhood, and whether the same traits that created his success also kept him from fully experiencing the life that success was supposed to create. In this episode, you'll learn: How growing up without much extra money taught Tom to associate hard work with safety, control, and financial security. Why the ability to grind through almost anything became one of Tom's greatest professional advantages—and one of his greatest personal liabilities. How work can quietly become an escape when you're highly competent professionally but uncomfortable navigating emotions you can't control. Why Tom defined being a good father primarily through providing—and the painful realization that his children may have wanted his presence more than what he provided. How one of the most difficult periods of his daughter's life forced Tom to question whether his absence earlier in her life had come with consequences he couldn't undo. Why losing his mother before retirement fundamentally changed the advice Tom gives clients about sacrificing today to prepare for tomorrow. How Tom is learning that vulnerability isn't weakness—and may actually be the missing ingredient for creating the deeper relationships he now values most. Key Time Stamps: 06:19: The childhood belief that taught me working harder was the only way to feel safe 15:40: I grew up believing vulnerability was weakness—and carried that belief into adulthood 21:56: I went from nearly six figures to a 24-cent paycheck on Christmas Eve 28:30: Why work became the safest place for me to hide when life got difficult 34:15: My wife finally told me, "We're not your employees" 36:20: What working 60, 70, even 90 hours a week quietly cost my family 39:33: Did my kids actually want everything I was sacrificing to give them? 43:04: Why working on my marriage felt more threatening than working on my business 47:02: The moment I realized my actions were building the wrong kind of legacy 50:09: The painful realization that maybe I didn't need to become successful so fast 52:06: My daughter walked away from the life I had worked so hard to build for her 56:29: I could provide almost anything for my family—then faced something I couldn't fix 1:01:23: Losing my mom changed everything I believed about sacrificing today for tomorrow 1:17:03: Why the word "contentment" still feels dangerous to me 1:27:12: Why I'm scared to let my wife and children hear this conversation I help founders, CEOs, and ambitious professionals overcome the hidden psychological and emotional costs of success so they can build a life that feels as successful as it looks—and make what matters most matter now. I Was Winning at Work While My Marriage Was Falling Apart | Kyle Holmes

What if the place where you feel most successful has quietly become the place you go to avoid the parts of life you can't control? Kyle Holmes relentlessly climbed the golf industry, became a GM at just 25, worked 90-hour weeks preparing for a major championship, and eventually achieved a longtime dream of owning a golf course.  But while Kyle kept winning professionally, work became the predictable place where he felt capable and in control—and staying there came at a cost: lost time with his five children, the breakdown of his marriage, and, as Kyle describes it, losing part of his happiness and his true identity along the way. In this conversation, Kyle opens up about the painful contradiction of deeply loving your family while repeatedly failing to prioritize them—and what it took for him to finally confront the price he was paying for success. In this episode, you'll learn: How the desire to prove himself helped Kyle accelerate his career—and why that same internal pressure became increasingly difficult to turn off. Why high achievers can feel incredibly competent at work while quietly avoiding the uncertainty and lack of control waiting for them at home. How working 80–90+ hour weeks can feel like responsible providing even while costing you presence with the people you're supposedly providing for. Why Kyle believes his tendency to overthink, rehearse conversations, and seek control was ultimately a defense mechanism. What it felt like for someone accustomed to solving problems and succeeding to finally face something he couldn't fix: the end of his marriage. How vulnerability, honest self-reflection, and divorce changed the way Kyle approaches fatherhood, relationships, work, and himself. Why contentment doesn't have to mean losing your edge—and how Kyle is learning to pursue more without needing the next achievement to make him whole. Key Time Stamps: 08:16: I finally got the job I'd been chasing—and my first thought was, "Now I have to do this" 15:11: I worked 90-hour weeks for the moment I'd spent my entire career chasing 20:00: The achievement that finally made me feel like no one could take my success away 27:59: What constantly trying to prove myself was doing inside my own head 31:45: Work became the place I felt most comfortable—and it cost me my marriage 34:30: The uncomfortable reason staying at work sometimes felt easier than going home 38:18: The hardest failure of my life was one I couldn't work my way out of 39:49: What hurt most wasn't my marriage ending—it was realizing I couldn't fix it 44:11: The one change after my divorce that made every part of my life better 47:41: The fear that kept me from asking the questions that might have saved my marriage 49:56: I told myself I had to choose work if I wanted to provide for my family 52:25: Can you deeply love your family—and still repeatedly fail to prioritize them? 55:11: Turning 40 forced me to confront the kind of father my children were watching 1:14:52: The things I thought success would give me that never showed up 1:15:43: What success cost me that took years to recognize I help founders, CEOs, and ambitious professionals overcome the hidden psychological and emotional costs of success so they can build a life that feels as successful as it looks—and make what matters most matter now. Jake Grosswiler spent years chasing what most ambitious people believe will finally make them happy: winning, money, business success, and achievement. Chasing More Money is Like an Endless Death Spiral | Dan Crabill

What if the story you tell yourself—that you're working this hard for your family—is actually the very thing pulling you away from them? Dan Crabill spent years chasing money because he believed it would earn him respect, prove his worth, and eventually give him peace. He built and sold a successful company, accumulated the cars and houses he once dreamed about, and provided an incredible life for his family—but success also cost him his health, strained his marriage, and took away moments with his children he now says he'd pay any amount of money to get back. Today, Dan's definition of success looks radically different. This conversation is about the danger of confusing providing with presence, why "just a little more" never becomes enough, and realizing before it's too late that the people you love don't need everything you're working to give them nearly as much as they need you. In this episode, you'll learn: How being bullied as a teenager created Dan's belief that making money would finally earn him respect. Why every financial milestone simply moved the finish line—and turned his pursuit of success into what he calls an "endless death spiral." How Dan convinced himself he was providing for his family while his wife and children were quietly starving for his attention. Why the pressure of entrepreneurship followed him home as anger, emotional eating, depression, and eventually weighing 337 pounds. What his son's struggle with severe depression forced Dan to confront about the father he'd been. Why selling his company for millions produced only a short-lived high—and triggered an unexpected identity crisis afterward. The painful realization behind Dan's new definition of success: your spouse and children don't care nearly as much about what you provide as they do about whether you're present. Key Time Stamps: 00:55: We were scraping spilled baby formula off the counter because we couldn't afford to waste it 07:00: The high school moment that made me believe money would finally earn me respect 10:42: I kept chasing the mountaintop—then discovered there was nothing waiting for me there 14:56: I thought I was killing it while my wife and kids were quietly falling apart 18:55: My wife and I both secretly wished the other would die 25:03: Why getting the next car, house, or million will never finally feel like enough 32:52: I was at Disney World wondering how I was going to make payroll 36:59: I reached 337 pounds while trying to build the life I thought I wanted 41:03: What I'd pay any amount of money to go back and experience again 42:40: "I'm providing for my family" was the story I used to justify everything 50:06: My son's depression forced me to confront the father I'd been 55:17: I sold my company for millions—and the feeling I expected didn't last 1:04:58: The uncomfortable truth about what I was really chasing all those years 1:12:47: The one thing all my success and money never gave me 1:13:55: What success took from me that no amount of money can ever buy back I help founders, CEOs, and ambitious professionals overcome the hidden psychological and emotional costs of success so they can build a life that feels as successful as it looks—and make what matters most matter now. Everyone Thought I Was Winning. I Was Quietly Falling Apart | Kris Basmagy

From the outside, Kris was winning: an eight-figure business, more than 100 employees, a growing family, financial success, and people constantly telling him how well he was doing.  Behind closed doors, he was battling crippling anxiety, depression, substance abuse, panic attacks, and a relentless belief that no matter how much he accomplished, he still wasn't enough. In this deeply vulnerable conversation, Kris shares how the same competitive operating system that helped him succeed nearly cost him the life he had worked so hard to build—and what finally happened when he stopped trying to outrun himself. In this episode, you'll learn: How childhood loss taught Kris to become fiercely independent and use performance as a way to receive the attention and connection he was missing. Why the relentless mentality that made him an elite baseball player followed him into his career—and eventually taught him to treat everything like an emergency. How the belief "I am not enough" can become fuel for extraordinary achievement while quietly making every accomplishment feel insufficient. What Kris's life actually looked like behind the trips, money, growing business, family, and appearance that he was "killing it." Why alcohol, partying, and other substances became less about having fun and more about temporarily silencing the thoughts he couldn't escape. What happened when Kris finally reached a breaking point—and discovered that vulnerability and asking for help weren't weaknesses. Why success didn't give Kris the peace he expected, and how he's learning to pursue ambition without sacrificing presence, his family, or himself in the process. Key Time Stamps: 04:24: The childhood loss that changed how I experienced the world 12:25: I became obsessed with being the best—and stopped enjoying the thing I loved most 16:59: Baseball ended, but the operating system driving me never did 26:23: Why I unknowingly started treating everything in my life like an emergency 30:14: The belief underneath my ambition that no amount of achievement could silence 33:45: I was building an eight-figure business while quietly falling apart 36:39: Twenty years of emotions finally came out on this staircase 39:06: Everyone thought I was living the dream—they had no idea what was happening behind closed doors 43:27: What I was really trying to escape every time I drank or used drugs 46:29: My wife picked up my phone—and discovered how bad things had actually become 56:32: I finally built a business that didn't need me—and that's when things got worse 1:01:18: Money, success, a family—and me alone in Manhattan at 3 A.M. 1:05:53: I finally told 15 strangers the secret I'd spent years hiding 1:25:22: Success didn't give me peace—it amplified everything I'd spent years avoiding 1:27:23: What success cost me that I can never get back I help founders, CEOs, and ambitious professionals overcome the hidden psychological and emotional costs of success so they can build a life that feels as successful as it looks—and make what matters most matter now.
