CONVERSATIONS FROM THE BRIDGE

Jonathan Chia

MARITIME LEADERS. THEIR STRATEGY, THEIR STORY. Maritime is run by people, not spreadsheets. The most consequential decisions in shipping happen because of how specific leaders think, what they refuse to do, and the convictions they hold quietly until the moment forces them into view. Earnings calls do not capture that. Conference panels do not capture it. Trade press rarely gets close. Conversations from the Bridge is built to close that gap. Each episode is a focused conversation with a senior maritime executive, anchored by a real set of strategic decisions their company has made. The decisions are the entry point. The conversation goes from there into how they actually think, what shaped them, and what they believe the industry gets wrong. Guests include leaders from across the maritime ecosystem: shipowners, financiers, operators, and executives whose decisions shape how the industry moves. The show is about the strategic thinking behind the decisions that define the sector, told by the people making them. Hosted by Jon Chia. New episodes available monthly on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.

Conversations from the Bridge: Ardmore Shipping (Episode 1)

Gernot Ruppelt and Bart Kelleher of Ardmore Shipping on how discipline shapes strategy In the last twelve months, Ardmore Shipping acquired three vessels, ordered new tonnage at Wuhu Shipyard, and refinanced its credit facility. The industry press has treated these as separate transactions. Gernot Ruppelt, Ardmore's CEO, and Bart Kelleher, its President, see them as one integrated philosophy. This inaugural episode of Conversations from the Bridge is an unpacking of that philosophy. Gernot walks through the strategic logic of the three-vessel acquisition in early 2025, when the Liberation Day tariff correction pushed secondhand values down 20 to 25 percent and Ardmore acted decisively on vessels they had been tracking through the market. Those vessels are now in the money by 30 to 35 percent within less than a year. The more interesting substance, though, is what Ardmore did in the year leading up to that moment: held back on acquisitions and invested in fleet upgrades, dividends, and share buybacks. As Gernot puts it, "just because you're holding off on acquisitions doesn't mean by any means that you're standing still." The conversation also introduces the framing that turns out to be central to how Ardmore thinks about its fleet: creating "trading options rather than obligations." The 25 to 30 percent of Ardmore's cargo that has historically been non-fossil fuel is not a philosophical commitment, it is flexibility. The Wuhu newbuilds are designed for that wider cargo slate specifically because optionality, not any specific cargo bet, is the strategic asset. Notable moments: On the framework of innovation, transactions, and culture, and why culture makes the difference between "a collection of steel" and a business On what "creating a natural hedge" looks like across a portfolio spanning selective growth and locked-in earnings On Ardmore's decision to keep vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz region, and the role of Mission to Seafarers in coordinating industry response On the loss of craft when decisions get handed off to machines too early About the guests: Gernot Ruppelt is the Chief Executive Officer of Ardmore Shipping Corporation and Bart Kelleher is President. About the show: Conversations from the Bridge is a maritime leadership podcast hosted by Jon Chia, produced in New York. New episodes are available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube.
