Who Am I Between What Was and What’s Next?

Episode 7: Who Am I Between What Was and What’s Next? What happens when the old version of your life no longer fits—but the new one hasn’t fully arrived yet? That in-between space can feel confusing. You’ve left something behind. You know you’re changing. You may even know God is doing something new. But you’re still asking: Who am I now? In this episode of The Safe Space with Dr. Mel, we’re talking about the identity shift that often happens in transition—the space between what was and what’s next. This is the part of transition people don’t always talk about. The uncertainty. The loss of familiar roles. The temptation to go backward just because the old version of you felt easier to explain. But the in-between is not wasted space. It can be the place where clarity is formed, identity is strengthened, and you learn to stop defining yourself only by the season you just left. Diagnosis: You know you’ve outgrown the old season, but you’re not fully sure who you are in the new one yet. Doc Drop: You are not required to have a title for every version of yourself while you are becoming. Prescription: Instead of rushing to define what’s next, take time to notice what is already changing in you. Ask yourself: What am I learning? What am I releasing? What am I no longer willing to carry into my next season? You may be between what was and what’s next—but you are not without purpose in the middle. Come in. Sit down. Stay awhile. When You Know It’s Time to Move

Sometimes the hardest part of transition isn’t moving. It’s admitting that where you are no longer fits who you’re becoming. In this first episode of The Safe Space with Dr. Mel Transition Series, we’re talking about that uncomfortable moment when you begin to realize something has shifted. The job may still look good on paper. The relationship may still be familiar. The role may still make sense to everyone else. But deep down, you know you can’t stay the same. So how do you know when it’s truly time to move—and when you’re simply frustrated, tired, or uncomfortable? Dr. Mel unpacks the signs that a season may be ending, what happens when we ignore the internal nudge to move, and why transition often begins long before anything changes on the outside. Diagnosis: You feel restless, disconnected, or increasingly uncomfortable in a place that once fit you. Doc Drop: Sometimes discomfort isn’t a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes it’s evidence that you’ve outgrown where you are. Prescription: Stop asking only, “Can I stay?” and begin asking, “Am I still supposed to?” Take some time this week to identify where you have been feeling resistance, restlessness, or misalignment. Ask yourself whether you are being called to fix something—or finally release it. You do not have to know every step before you take the next one. Come in. Sit down. Stay awhile. This is your Safe Space. REFLECT. REBUILD. RISE. Dr. MelLife & Leadership Coach@DrMelBuilds
