THE CONTINENT is a weekly commentary podcast on the one story that matters most in European politics and society right now — traced properly, connecting Brussels, the national capitals, and the wider world. Each episode takes a single development and argues it out: what actually happened, why the obvious reading is incomplete, and what is genuinely still unresolved. It speaks with an institutional editorial voice — a considered point of view that belongs to the show, not headline-reading and not both-sides hedging. Made for listeners who already follow the news and want to understand what it means. New episodes every week.

  1. Episode 1

Europe’s Holiday Shock: War, Heat, and Last-Minute Fear ✈️🌍

Europe’s travel boom hides deeper unease: war, inflation, and climate change are reshaping when—and whether—people dare to book holidays.

  2. Episode 2

Germany’s Spy Revolution: Security Power, Digital War, Democracy 🇩🇪⚠️

Germany is expanding spy powers, hack-back capabilities, and AI surveillance—raising a major question: how far can democracy go in the grey zone?

  3. Episode 3

Ukraine’s Election Dilemma: Democracy Under Fire and Delay

In wartime Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected calls for a presidential election as martial law continues under Russia’s full-scale invasion. His mandate formally ended in May 2024, while millions remain displaced, front lines keep shifting, and the war grinds on. ⚔️🗳️ The dispute hardened when Zelenskyy warned that an election now could split the country and become a “tsunami” for the state. The challenge raised by recently dismissed former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov turned a legal question into a direct test of wartime legitimacy. The stakes are concrete: soldiers at the front, voters in occupied or frontline areas, and Ukrainians scattered across Europe would all face serious barriers to participating. Missile strikes, disrupted communications, and the shortage of Patriot interceptors deepen the sense that campaigning and voting could be unsafe and contested. What remains unresolved is whether postponing elections protects democracy or weakens it by stretching emergency rule further into the future. THE CONTINENT examines whether Ukraine can defend itself without suspending accountability, how a legitimate vote could work in wartime, and what standards Europe should demand.

  4. Episode 4

Bardella, Farage, and Europe’s New Far-Right Alliance 🌍

French National Rally president Jordan Bardella, 30, is due in Birmingham next week to address Reform UK and hold a joint press conference with Nigel Farage. The visit comes as Marine Le Pen campaigns for the French presidency after her conviction over misuse of more than 2.8 million euros in European Parliament funds. 🚨🇫🇷🇬🇧 The tension is that movements built on national sovereignty are now coordinating across borders. What began as anti-Brussels, anti-immigration politics is shifting into a practical network of shared slogans, tactics, and political legitimacy. The concrete stakes run through the Channel: Bardella has backed tighter police cooperation with London over small boats, but wants migrants returned to their countries of origin rather than sent back to France. The partnership also reflects Le Pen’s own legal and political uncertainty as her appeal goes to France’s highest court. What remains unresolved is whether these parties can turn resentment into credible governing cooperation without undermining the sovereignty they champion. THE CONTINENT examines whether this cross-border right can move from protest to power, how it handles border control in practice, and what its growing international network means for Europe.

  5. Episode 5

72-Hour Ukraine Pause: Peace Talk, War Pressure, Moscow

Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow carrying a new American attempt to restart Ukraine negotiations, with both Russia and Ukraine agreeing to halt airstrikes during the visit. The pause came as missiles were still killing workers in Ukraine and the envoys were due to meet Vladimir Putin before travelling to Kyiv. 🚨🕊️ The rupture is that diplomacy has returned without any clear sign the war is easier to end. The front line is largely frozen across roughly 1,250 kilometres, while Ukraine strikes deep into Russia and Moscow answers with widening waves of drones and missiles against Ukrainian cities. That stalemate is grounded in specific pressure points: Russian forces hit Ukraine’s intelligence headquarters and airports in Kyiv on the eve of the trip, while Moscow paused airstrikes only during the envoys’ visit. The script frames this as coercive diplomacy, with force used to shape the negotiating environment. What remains unresolved is whether the American proposal changes the core imbalance: Russia wants territory, limits on Ukraine’s sovereignty and a veto over Nato, while Ukraine wants survival, respected borders and credible security guarantees. THE CONTINENT examines whether this visit can produce a durable peace, what Europe can sustain, and whether Moscow is being deterred or rewarded.

  6. Episode 6

Trump’s Ireland Remarks Shake Northern Ireland Peace Deal

In Ireland, Donald Trump suggested unification with Northern Ireland “may as well happen now” during a visit that also drew protest in Dublin. The remarks put the Good Friday Agreement, and its consent-based approach to Irish unity, back in focus. 🇮🇪⚖️ The tension came when Trump treated a constitutional question as something that could be fast-tracked by political will, rather than by a referendum or majority support. Unionists, Dublin, and London all pushed back against the idea that an outsider could set the pace. The stakes are grounded in the Good Friday Agreement, which allows Northern Ireland’s future to change only with the consent of its people. The script also points to Catherine Connolly’s meeting with Trump, where she gave him a St Brigid’s Cross and a poetry collection including Ceasefire. What remains unresolved is whether any majority support for Irish unity exists, and how any future settlement could protect unionist identity, security, and consent. THE CONTINENT examines whether Trump’s intervention changes anything, what the peace process actually permits, and how Irish unity could ever be made credible.

  7. Episode 7

Cyprus Left Out as EU Builds Defence Shield ⚔️

In Brussels on 16 September, the European Commission unveiled a new defence push: a European Security Strategy, an Emergency Security Protocol, and EISE, the European Instrument for Strategic Enablers. The State of the Union also promised protection for “every square meter” of EU territory. 🇪🇺🛡️ The tension sharpened around Cyprus: the island was absent from the speech, even as its leaders expected clearer recognition of its security concerns. The omission exposed a gap between expansive defence language and the unresolved reality of a member state outside NATO. The debate turns on concrete machinery, not slogans: Article 42.7, Article 41.2, SAFE loans, and a protocol still without a settled legal base. The Commission says EU states have boosted defence spending by almost eighty percent since 2020, with eighteen national plans approved and twelve billion euros already disbursed. What remains unresolved is whether the proposed protocol will have a legal base under Article 122 or Article 352, and how it will relate to Article 42.7’s mutual-defence clause. THE CONTINENT examines whether Europe’s new defence architecture can protect Cyprus, what the protocol can actually do, and where Brussels stops and national power begins.

  8. Episode 8

Italy’s Classroom Crackdown: Migration, Identity, and 30%

Italy’s government approved a decree on Thursday setting a 30% ceiling in classrooms for students who do not adequately know Italian, alongside a ban on burqas and niqabs in schools. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the rules would begin in the 2027–28 school year. 📚🇮🇹 The controversy sharpened because the policy was framed as integration, while critics saw a political move aimed at migration and Muslim identity. The decree also allows language and literacy courses, fines of up to €1,000 for non-compliant parents, and possible social-services referrals. Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara said the measure would affect about 1,000 classrooms, roughly 0.3% of classrooms nationwide, and that children born or raised in Italy, or with substantial nursery or school experience, would be exempt. Save the Children warned it could create “first-class” and “second-class” students. What remains unresolved is whether the decree will improve integration or simply sort children into new categories, and how schools will define inadequate Italian, apply exemptions, and handle referrals or fines. THE CONTINENT examines whether this is education policy, political signalling, or both, and what it means for Italy’s 2027 election fight.

  9. Episode 9

Madrid’s Housing Revolt Tests Spain’s Political Credibility

Thousands protested in Madrid and cities across Spain on Saturday after parliament rejected two Socialist-led housing decrees on Friday. Authorities put the Madrid crowd at 70,000; organisers claimed 500,000. The measures would have extended eviction protections and regulated temporary and room rentals 🏠✊ The turning point came when the People’s party, Vox and Catalan independence party Junts voted down both decrees, blocking promised relief just as rent pressures hit a political breaking point. In Valencia, clashes with police escalated the unrest further. Concrete examples gave the crisis its force: an 87-year-old wheelchair user, Maricarmen Abascal, was evicted after an investment fund allegedly demanded a 230% rent increase. Protesters also described one-bedroom flats in Madrid at about €1,000 a month, roughly half the capital’s median salary. What remains unresolved is whether Spain will answer the housing emergency with regulation, more construction, or a new political mandate; Spanish media say a November snap election is possible. THE CONTINENT examines whether Sánchez will call an election, whether the housing package can return, and what happens next to eviction protections and rent rules.

  10. Episode 10

Nobel Prize and US sanctions hit the ICC in 2026

Navi Pillay, the South African jurist and former International Criminal Court judge, won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for advancing international criminal justice, while the Trump administration moved to sanction the court and its service providers. 🏛️⚖️ The prize and the sanctions collided within hours, turning a recognition of international law into a direct confrontation with Washington’s claim that the court is a rogue institution and cannot police allies or Americans. The ICC had already been preparing for pressure by shifting office computers off Microsoft software and arranging new banking and health insurance safeguards, while its headquarters in the Netherlands and its dependence on member states and institutions made the threat concrete. What remains unresolved is whether the European Union will activate a blocking mechanism to shield the court and whether its divided governments can agree on how far to go. THE CONTINENT examines the clash between international law, US sanctions and Europe’s willingness to defend the court.

  11. Episode 11

300,000 tonnes of Russian diesel and Washington’s sanctions pause

The United States paused a sanctions law while a deal brought more than 300,000 tonnes of Russian diesel toward delivery, even as Washington framed the move as part of efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. The decision came as pressure on Moscow became a live test of policy. ⛽️⚖️ The rupture came when the pause was announced alongside one of Russia’s heaviest recent attacks on Ukraine’s power system. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 15 critical generation and transmission facilities had been hit, turning the sanctions decision into a fresh flashpoint. The package under discussion was the Lindsey Graham Act, which would have targeted Russian officials, banks, energy companies and the shadow fleet used to move oil around existing restrictions. It also threatened tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India. What remains unresolved is whether easing pressure can produce negotiations, lower prices or a Russian pause in attacks — or whether it simply strengthens Moscow while weakening Ukraine’s defence. THE CONTINENT examines whether sanctions, energy security and diplomacy can still be aligned, and what Washington’s shift means for Kyiv and Europe.
