Future Frequencies Reimagining Sports Sound in Virtual and Digital Spaces

As sports increasingly exist simultaneously in physical stadiums and digital spaces—from streaming broadcasts to virtual reality experiences to metaverse competitions—the acoustic landscape of athletics is fundamentally transforming. This concluding episode examines how sound will function in sports futures that may not require physical presence, exploring both the technological possibilities and the cultural losses inherent in this transition. We investigate how esports have developed entirely new sonic aesthetics, from the clicking of keyboards becoming victory sounds to synthesized music replacing crowd roars, and what this reveals about the relationship between authentic sound and athletic achievement. Through interviews with audio engineers developing virtual sports experiences, esports athletes, and futurists studying sports evolution, the episode explores emerging questions: Can virtual crowd noise ever replicate the psychological impact of physical crowds? What happens to the acoustic experience of sports when it's mediated entirely through headphones or spatial audio? How might accessibility improve when sound design becomes programmable rather than dependent on physical stadium architecture? The investigation includes the lesser-known aspect: how pandemic-era sports revealed both the possibilities and limitations of artificial acoustic environments, and what athletes learned about their own sonic dependencies. The episode also examines how digital spaces might allow for acoustic experiences impossible in physical stadiums—from personalized soundscapes tailored to individual listeners to the amplification of athlete voices that have historically been silenced. We conclude by interrogating what might be lost and gained as sports sound becomes increasingly digital, virtual, and algorithmically mediated. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
