Jordan Robb

Some people are deep in building their business. Some are just getting started. Some haven't taken the leap yet, and some are wondering how they'll ever make it work alongside a family. This podcast brings you the real stories behind the wins, the losses, the money and the mindset it takes to build something that lasts. Hosted by Jordan Robb, a property investor and developer who's spent over a decade building multiple businesses from scratch. These days he oversees what he's built and is on the hunt for what's next, from consulting other business owners to new ventures entirely. Three years ago that hunt got personal too, when he became a father, and an active one at that. Every episode, Jordan sits down with a different guest to unpack how they built what they built. What they got right, what they got wrong, what changed everything, and what it really costs to build a business or a portfolio from nothing. And woven through it, the part most business podcasts leave out. Where family fits into the story too, whether you're living it already or picturing what it might look like. Because ambition and family were never meant to compete. They blend.

Finding Profitable Land Developments, With Less Risk: Jim J Davidson

In this episode of Profits & Parenting, Jordan sits down with Jim J Davidson, property developer, author, speaker and mentor with over 40 years in property. Jim bought his first property in Edinburgh in 1973, aged 16, then went on to run convenience stores and a petrol station, build and lose businesses in Florida, and eventually build a career in ground up development. He is a dad of three daughters. In this episode, Jim explains why land is where the profit is won and lost, and how to find it before anyone else does. He and Jordan get into off market land, the simple formula for valuing a site, why he now uses option agreements instead of conditional offers, and the 18 year property cycle he believes is pointing at a crash. They also talk about Toastmasters, investing in yourself, and the honest truth about work life balance. Key Takeaways: - Cheap land is not the same as good land, because the gross development value and the ability to sell on matter more than the purchase price - Work backwards from the gross development value, take off at least 25% profit and all costs, and what is left is what the land is worth - Option agreements let you walk away, while conditional offers can leave you owning a dead site - Finding land comes down to boots on the ground, maps, and hidden gems like networking outside the property world - Always have more than one exit strategy, because planning can take anywhere from 6 weeks to over two years - The property cycle runs roughly 18 years, and land values underneath the property are what really crash - Investing in yourself is the one investment nobody can take from you Best Moments: "Because land's cheap doesn't mean to say it's right." "You can have two pieces of land sitting side by side, and they can have two entirely different values because the ground conditions could be entirely different." "When we talk about a property crash, it's not actually the property market that's crashing, it's the land values underneath the property." "I think people retire from something because they hate what they're doing." Enjoying the show? I Sold A Venture-Backed Startup Then Started Again, While Having a Young Family: Andy McGinley

In this episode of Profits & Parenting, Jordan sits down with Andy McGinley, co-founder and CEO of Hosel, a marketplace that compares second-hand golf clubs across sellers, like Skyscanner for golf. Andy previously founded CareSourcer, a care marketplace that raised around £9 million in venture funding before a COVID pivot and a sale. He is now building again as a dad of two young girls. In this episode, Andy traces his path from his family's care at home business in Edinburgh to CareSourcer, where he pre-sold £25,000 of access before writing a line of code. He shares what COVID did to the business, why he chose the buyer that protected his team, and how an exit landed just before his first daughter was born. He and Jordan then get into raising £500,000 from angels and a London fund through an advanced subscription agreement, how SEIS and EIS work, and what building a second startup feels like with a family at home. Key Takeaways: - Starting a business in your twenties runs on naivety and energy, while a second time round you have a network and know where the start line is - The family care business focused on just two Edinburgh postcodes, so carers spent time in homes rather than travelling - CareSourcer pre-sold £25,000 of access to providers before any code was written - COVID took CareSourcer's placement revenue to zero overnight, forcing a pivot to an employer benefit and eventually a sale - Choosing the buyer that protected the existing team mattered more than chasing the best offer - Hosel raised £500,000 through angels and a London fund before launch, using an advanced subscription agreement - SEIS and EIS can reduce investor risk and remove capital gains tax on exit, but they should not be the only reason to invest - Scottish founders can raise in London by showing up, with networking powering growth more than location - AI is used daily, from raising capital to planning a customer service agent that keeps the team small - Marketplace data shows which clubs hold their value, and a Scotty Cameron putter holds up far better than most Best Moments: "When you launch or go for a second time business, it does feel a little bit like you're on cheat mode to some degree." "I got 25 grand from selling to providers before I'd written a line of code." "If you replace failure with learning, because that's what you've done. You've just learned." "I'm not in the 5:00 AM club from a CEO perspective, but I'm definitely from a second child perspective." Enjoying the show? Making Money Simple, And How To Invest To Preserve Your Cash: Keith Boyes of Spentwell.

In this episode of Profits & Parenting, Jordan sits down with Keith Boyes, chartered financial planner and founder of Spentwell. Keith's path into financial planning started with a sports management degree and a start date that landed right in the middle of the 2008 to 2009 financial crisis. Keith unpacks why cash feels safe but quietly costs money over time thanks to inflation, and why the industry often makes money feel more intimidating than it needs to be. He and Jordan get into what he learned advising expats in Hong Kong, why FCA regulation genuinely protects clients, and why leading with education builds trust faster than leading with products. Key Takeaways: - Holding cash long term feels safe but inflation quietly erodes its value - A simple plan you actually follow beats a complicated one you don't - Diversification is about more than "eggs in one basket," it shapes how a portfolio is built - Pensions and ISAs each play a different role as tax wrappers - Many people struggle to spend in retirement after decades spent saving - AI is already cutting admin for financial advisers, freeing them to focus on client behaviour and real-life decisions Enjoying the show? Building A High-Growth Property Business In Scotland: Laurie Duncan

In this episode of Profits & Parenting, Jordan sits down with Laurie Duncan, co-founder and director of Real Property Scotland, a business that trades around 30 single property units a month and has built a portfolio of over 350 units. Laurie's journey started with his first buy-to-let after the 2009 crash, and even had Spider-Man filming outside his office along the way. Laurie unpacks how off-market deals, investor support, and a ruthless focus on buying well took him from one property to running a group. He and Jordan get into the real pivots that forced better decisions, from the Section 24 tax changes to moving property out of his own name as he scaled, and why deal trading and sourcing let him grow without relying on endless personal cash. Key Takeaways: - Off-market deals and disciplined buying matter more than volume alone - Section 24 tax changes forced a rethink on how property should be held as you scale - Deal trading and sourcing can fund growth without endless personal cash - Professionalising a brand and building a team culture that lasts is what lets you move from doing everything yourself to working on the business - AI tools like Claude can turn messy deal details into clean, on-brand deal presentations fast - Commercial property brings different funding and negotiation dynamics than residential buy-to-let Enjoying the show? What If Your Best Business Move Starts As A Disaster With Mark Innes

In this episode of Profits & Parenting, Jordan sits down with Mark Innes, founder of The Tartan Timber Co and Tartan Talks, a business networking community based in East Lothian. Mark's path took him from joinery through the 2007 crash into an unexpected stint in the Royal Navy, then Network Rail, before he found his way into business ownership. Mark opens up about property deals that collapsed late in the process, why he treated getting discharged from Navy training as a turning point rather than a setback, and how he rebuilt his income fast by launching a timber merchant from affordable space. He and Jordan get into disruption as a strategy, running an ultramarathon across the Sahara, and the boundaries he now sets to protect family time while scaling the business. Key Takeaways: - Leaving joinery during the 2007 crash and an unexpected turn into the Royal Navy shaped how Mark handles setbacks - Property deals falling apart late in the process pushed him toward building his own business instead - Winning customers through responsiveness, service and social media attention built the timber business fast - Tartan Talks was created to bring trades together and build deeper business relationships - Self-sufficiency lessons from the Marathon des Sables carry over into how he runs the business - Batching work and choosing when to be reachable protects family time as the business scales - Systemising operations and hiring reduces dependence on him personally, with a "forever home" as the long-term goal - Christmas tree sales smooth seasonal cashflow, with year-on-year data shaping the approach Enjoying the show? In this episode of Profits & Parenting, Jordan sits down with Jayne Smith an estate agent at McEwan Fraser Legal, former service accommodation business owner across Scotland and the South of France, and chair of community radio station K107FM. She's also a mum of three, with a 22-year gap between her second and third child. Jayne opens up about executive burnout, the guilt of taking time for herself, and why chasing every deal in sight can make you a "busy fool" in investors' eyes. She and Jordan dig into what real work-life balance looks like when you're building a business. Key Takeaways: • Executive burnout can hit even when everything looks successful from the outside • Chasing too many opportunities at once costs you investor trust • Work-life balance isn't about splitting time evenly, it's about full presence in each mode • Parenting looks completely different depending on the season of life you're in when you have kids Best Moments: "When you're working, you give it 100%. When you're not working, you give it 100%. That's the balance." "I'd get up from my bed in the morning, I'd go sit by my swimming pool and I would do nothing... I'm not really enjoying life or doing anything with my life." "You run the risk of being a very busy fool because you're trying to be too successful."
