Stuff They Should've Said

Whitley

Nobody told us adulthood would have this many plot twists. "Stuff They Should've Said" is a lifestyle and culture podcast for ambitious women navigating the messy, exciting space between who they've been and who they're becoming. Hosted by Whitley, it's the conversation after the conversation about love, money, ambition, friendship, heartbreak, identity, wellness, career, reinvention and the dreams that refuse to leave you alone. Smart, candid, funny and deeply human, this is where we talk about the things women usually learn five years too late. You're not starting over. You're becoming. And there are some things they really should've said.

HEATED: Who Told Black Women We Couldn't Be Mad?

Black women are allowed to be brilliant. Ambitious. Educated. Successful. Strong. But angry? Somehow, that's where everybody gets uncomfortable. In this episode of The Stuff They Should've Said, Whitley sits down with her good friend from college, Caroline Johnson for an honest conversation about anger, burnout, disappointment, fear, heartbreak, and what happens when high-functioning women finally hit their limit. Because for Black women, anger is complicated. We're often expected to keep it together, stay professional, remain gracious, push through, pray about it, and somehow still show up polished. Research has also shown that Black women can be judged more harshly for expressing anger, while the pressure to embody the "Strong Black Woman" can make it harder to admit when we're overwhelmed. Whitley and Caroline get into the moments when "I'm fine" becomes I'm about to crash out—and why sometimes the anger isn't really about anger at all. Sometimes it's grief. Exhaustion. Resentment. Fear. Feeling unseen. Or realizing that the life you worked so hard to build doesn't feel the way you thought it would. This is a conversation about what happens underneath the ambition. How do we recognize the warning signs? How do we stop suppressing everything until we explode? And how do Black women make space for their mental health without feeling like they're failing at being strong? For every woman who has ever cried in the car, fixed her makeup, and walked into the meeting like nothing happened: You might not be crazy. You might just be HEATED.
