Ep 5: The Move No Human Would Have Played

In March 2016, Google's AlphaGo took on Lee Sedol, one of the greatest Go players in the world — and played a move so strange that experts thought it was a mistake. Maya and Dev tell the story of Move 37, the play no human would have made that changed an ancient game forever. Show notes: - AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol, Seoul, March 2016: Go was considered at least a decade beyond computers because it runs on intuition, not just calculation - Move 37 of Game 2 looked like an error — AlphaGo itself calculated only a 1-in-10,000 chance a human would pick it — but it quietly won the game - AlphaGo took the series 4–1, and top players didn't quit afterwards — they studied its strange moves and started playing more creatively themselves

Ep 4: The Computer That Beat The World Chess Champion

In May 1997, IBM's Deep Blue beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov — the first time a computer defeated a reigning world champion in a match. Maya and Dev tell the story of the showdown that changed how the world thought about machines. Show notes: - Deep Blue vs Garry Kasparov, May 1997: the computer won the six-game match 3.5 to 2.5 - Kasparov accused the team of human interference after one move looked too "creative" for a machine - The match became a cultural turning point — proof that brute-force computing could beat human intuition at the highest level.

Ep 3: The Chatbot 30 Million Teens Treated Like a Friend

Before ChatGPT, there was SmarterChild — the robot-faced AIM buddy from 2001 that answered questions, reported game scores, and charmed a generation of teens. Maya and Dev revisit the scripted chatbot that felt like a real friend. Show Notes - SmarterChild (ActiveBuddy, 2001) landed on AIM, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN — over 30 million buddy lists at its peak - Behind the friendly robot: a scripted decision tree, not real intelligence — the same ELIZA-effect spell from 1966 with better marketing - Microsoft bought ActiveBuddy in 2007 and quietly retired SmarterChild, but its conversational style fed straight into the voice assistants that followed.

Ep 2: The Fake Robot That Fooled Napoleon

In 1770, a machine called the Mechanical Turk played chess against crowds — including Napoleon. It was all a trick. Maya and Dev unpack the hoax and why its name lives on in the hidden human labor behind today's AI. Show Notes - The Mechanical Turk debuted in 1770, built by Wolfgang von Kempelen — a chess-playing "automaton" that toured Europe - It was a hoax: a human chess master hid inside the cabinet, working the machine by hand - Its name inspired Amazon Mechanical Turk — and the modern term "ghost work" for the humans doing invisible labor behind AI

Ep 1: The 1966 Chatbot That Started It All

Long before ChatGPT, there was ELIZA - a 1966 computer program that had real people confessing their deepest secrets to what was basically a simple script. Maya and Dev tell the wild, funny, slightly unsettling story of the chatbot that started it all - and what it reveals about us. Wait, that's Al? Yep, now you know! Show notes: ELIZA was created in 1966 by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT People formed emotional attachments to it including Weizenbaum's own secretary, who asked him to leave the room so she could talk to it privately Weizenbaum became one of Al's earliest critics because of what ELIZA revealed about human nature
