Rally Cigs, William Contreras MVP, & Brewers Win It All | SWNP Ep. 17

Fifty-seven years, one parade. The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions. We open with the rally heaters, because that story earned its own segment. Jeff Passan reported that Milwaukee's hitters had been lighting cigarettes in the batting cage before games all season, everywhere they played, on the theory that if you're smoking fastballs in the cage you'll smoke them in the game. Christian Yelich's version: you walk by the cage and see the cigs lit. A club with a full analytics department, and this might be the thing that actually did it. Milwaukee hit .278 with a .742 OPS against fastballs in this World Series. Tampa Bay hit .159 with a .395 OPS. Then the part that still doesn't sound real: the smallest market in the sport, 57 seasons without a title, no Fall Classic since 1982, champions in five. Then we go game by game. Game 3 and the eight-run fifth, the most two-out runs in an inning in World Series history, seven straight hits with two down, while Robert Gasser faced the minimum 18 batters through six. Game 4 and the sweep that got away, with Cooper Pratt's 12th-inning homer, Aaron Ashby running his postseason scoreless streak to 18 innings, and Ben Williamson chopping a pinch-hit walk-off into right to keep Tampa alive. Then the clincher, where Jacob Misiorowski went 5 2/3 scoreless with 51 of his 86 pitches at 100-plus and Trevor Megill got a six-out save he hadn't needed all season. The one we most wanted to get into: what exactly did we just watch from these kids? Cooper Pratt, a sixth-round pick three years out of a Mississippi high school, put together six straight hits in the World Series and passed Lou Gehrig and Willie Mays in the record book on the way. Jackson Chourio tied Babe Ruth with 10 hits through four games, then passed him in Game 5 with his 11th, and now owns the most postseason hits by anyone before turning 23. Is this a window, or is this just what the Brewers are now?Plus William Contreras taking home World Series MVP and everything in that month that doesn't show up in a slash line, Misiorowski's 1.80 ERA and 1,115 pitches at triple digits, every starter Milwaukee chewed through this October, Pat Murphy's three years, Christian Yelich finally getting his, and a man's ashes on the turf at Tropicana Field.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro & Rally Heaters(05:29) World Series Game 3 Recap(19:50) World Series Game 4 Recap(27:32) World Series Clincher Recap(37:30) World Series Stat Nuggets(58:13) Spreading of the AshesNew episodes weekly. Yandy Diaz Check Swing, Sal Frelick's Shot, & Jacob Misiorowski's Heat | SWNP Ep. 16

Two World Series games, two one-run finals, and neither one ended on a bat or a glove. We open on where this thing actually stands: Milwaukee up 2-0 heading to Tropicana Field, a combined margin of two runs across both games, and an umpire in the middle of both endings.Game 1 opens with the fastest pitch ever tracked in a World Series — Jacob Misiorowski at 103.5 on the very first pitch of the night, erasing a starter's record that had stood at 101.1 — and closes with a game-ending double play getting overturned on review. In between, William Contreras threw out two runners in back-to-back innings and went 2-for-2 on ABS challenges, making him the first catcher this century with two hits and two caught stealing in a World Series game. Game 2 went the other direction: Tampa Bay hung four on Logan Henderson in the first five batters, the two teams combined for seven hits in the opening inning (tied for the most in any World Series first inning ever), and then the Rays never scored again. Sal Frelick, who hit four home runs all year in 407 plate appearances and one in his last 272 tries against lefties, tied it in the sixth with a 408-foot swing off a left-hander, and Cooper Pratt won it in the seventh. Then there's the ending nobody can agree on. Yandy Diaz tries to hold up on a full count with the tying run on third, Jim Wolf says no swing, Contreras appeals, James Hoye says he went around, and a World Series game is over. Check swings aren't reviewable, there is no definition of a swing anywhere in the official rulebook, and the system they've been testing in the minors — bat past 45 degrees — would have sent Diaz to first. So what's the actual fix here?Plus Aaron Ashby's 15 2/3 scoreless innings and the single out standing between him and Andrew Miller's record, Freddy Peralta starting against the franchise he pitched 211 games for, Ben Oglivie's 1982 home run finally getting company after 16,075 days, two straight innings the Rays ended on the basepaths, and our Game 3 calls.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro(02:09) World Series Game 1 Recap(28:02) World Series Game 2 Recap(50:36) World Series Game 3 Preview(55:06) Game 3 PredictionsNew episodes weekly. World Series Preview: Brewers vs Rays, Yandy Diaz Called His Shot | SWNP Ep. 15

The World Series is set and it's two teams that have never won one. The Brewers swept the Dodgers, the Rays put away the Guardians in six, and we go game by game through all of it.Junior Caminero hits the first postseason homer of his career off a pitch nobody had ever homered off, then takes 38.66 seconds to run the bases — the second-slowest trot of the Statcast era, behind only himself. Freddy Peralta goes from a disastrous Mets run to ALCS MVP. Jackson Chourio leads off a playoff game with a homer for the third straight October. Garrett Mitchell hits more homers off lefties in 25 hours than he did all season. And everybody watched Milwaukee sweep Los Angeles and called it small ball, while the Brewers were quietly putting up the highest three-true-outcome rate of any team in any best-of-seven postseason series ever played.Plus: Stephen Vogt saves Gavin Williams for a Game 7 he had to win Game 6 to reach, the Rays clinch a pennant in throwback Devil Rays jerseys with B.J. Upton and Randy Arozarena in the building, and a thousand people are about to redeem a $1,000 brass ticket they bought in 2015.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro & World Series Matchup Set(02:30) NLCS Game 3 Recap(09:31) NLCS Game 4 Recap(19:43) ALCS Game 3 Recap(23:32) ALCS Game 4 Recap(29:44) ALCS Game 5 Recap(37:48) ALCS Game 6 Recap(52:52) Devil Ray Magic(55:49) World Series Preview(58:58) Brewers Timeless Ticket(01:01:39) Our WS Picks and PredictionsNew episodes weekly. Ohtani's Slump, Jose Ramirez On Fire, & Peralta Shoves | SWNP Ep. 14

Milwaukee is two wins from the World Series and getting there in a way nobody in the history of the sport ever has. Through six postseason games, 439 straight Brewers hitters stepped in with the score inside two runs. The next closest team on that list did it 96 fewer times — in 1915. Then the bullpen went 15 up, 15 down in Game 2, the most perfect innings any bullpen has thrown in a postseason game.Meanwhile the back-to-back champs can't buy a hit with a runner in scoring position, Shohei Ohtani hasn't gone deep since August 18, and Dave Roberts spent an off day explaining why he's still in the lineup. In the AL, Cleveland stole Game 1 at the Trop by becoming the first team ever shut out through five and then scoring in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Tampa answered with Freddy Peralta throwing the best game of his life — 27 pitches at 97-plus, more than any start of his career — and three unearned runs was all they needed.Plus: José Ramírez is playing out of his mind, and Brandon Woodruff threw 31 pitches at Dodger Stadium with the intent dialed up.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro(01:44) NLCS Game 1 Recap(09:00) NLCS Game 2 Recap(20:01) ALCS Game 1 Recap(26:15) ALCS Game 2 Recap(34:00) Jose Ramirez Gets His Flowers(37:21) Brandon Woodruff Return?(39:51) NLCS & ALCS Look Ahead(43:14) StatpadNew episodes weekly. Gavin Williams' 24 Ks, Jose Ramirez's Golf Shot, and ALCS & NLCS Preview | SWNP Ep. 13

Nobody in baseball history had ever struck out 21 batters in a nine-inning game. Cleveland did it in an elimination game, three days after breaking the old postseason record themselves. We open with the Division Series already in the rearview. Cleveland becomes the 11th team out of 96 to win a best-of-five after going down 0-2, and the 4th ever to do it after dropping the first two at home. José Ramírez homers on a pitch 0.74 feet off the ground, the lowest pitch anyone has hit for a postseason home run since tracking began in 2008. The Rays sweep the Yankees, who hit .130/.192/.239 as a team — the worst multi-game postseason series any Yankee club has ever played. Atlanta goes 1-for-23 with runners in scoring position and leaves 28 men on base. Garrett Mitchell takes a game-tying home run off Manny Machado's bat in the eighth inning of a clincher. But the one we most wanted to sit in: what exactly did Gavin Williams just do? Eleven strikeouts in a Game 2 loss, the last three outs of Game 4 out of the bullpen on his throw day, then twelve more in a winner-take-all Game 5 on one day of rest.Plus both Championship Series previewed start to finish, and the fact that the Dodgers' payroll is bigger than the other three teams left combined.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro(01:42) Guardians Epic Series Comeback(13:04) Rays Sweep Yankees(20:31) Dodgers Finish off Braves(29:29) Brewers Take Down Padres(39:20) ALCS Preview(44:30) NLCS Preview(50:16) Dodgers Outspend the Other 3 Teams Combined(51:48) CS Winners & MVP PredictionsNew episodes weekly. Chourio Superstar, More Errors Than Hits, & White Sox Surge | SWNP Ep. 12

Four errors, three hits, and a baseball that hit the roof.We open with every Division Series two games in and already stranger than anyone planned for, then walk the board before getting into any of them.Three of the four series are sitting 2-0. Chicago hasn't lost a game this postseason and got a four-inning, six-strikeout save out of Grant Taylor — the first four-inning postseason save since Lance McCullers Jr. in 2017. Drew Rasmussen took a no-hitter into the eighth against the Yankees and finished with ten strikeouts and one hit, then New York answered in Game 2 with four errors and three hits. Jacob Misiorowski opened the NLDS with a 104.8 mph fastball, the fastest postseason pitch ever tracked, in a game where both teams combined to average 98.50 on the heater. And Jackson Chourio walked off Mason Miller with the bases loaded and two strikes, at 22 years old, with more postseason RBI before turning 23 than anyone in baseball history except Andruw Jones.Plus Didier Fuentes retiring 11 straight Dodgers at 21 years old, Max Muncy quietly climbing the all-time postseason leaderboards, and a floated rule change about swapping out umpires that we're pretty sure nobody has thought of before.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro(02:22) Guardians vs. White Sox Game 1(10:12) Guardians vs. White Sox Game 2(18:09) Rays vs. Yankees Game 1(30:36) Rays vs. Yankees Game 2(40:07) Brewers vs. Padres Game 1(45:57) Brewers vs. Padres Game 2(55:44) Dodgers vs. Braves Game 1(59:10) Dodgers vs. Braves Game 2New episodes weekly. Division Series Preview + 3 Playoff Teams Never Played a Game in October | SWNP Ep. 11

Three teams made the playoffs and never played a game in October. We open on the fastest Wild Card round anybody can remember: three of the four series ended in two-game sweeps, and the Cubs' season ended at 12:01 a.m. Chicago time, which means Cubs fans got one full minute of October baseball. From there it's series by series. Cam Schlittler went 6.1 scoreless with 10 strikeouts and 24 whiffs against the Red Sox, who scored two runs in 18 innings. The White Sox ran an 81-81 Astros team out in two. The Cubs led the majors in runs per game and then slugged .145, the lowest mark in any multi-game postseason series in MLB history. And the Braves finally got past the Phillies in Game 3 behind three home runs and Chris Sale coming out of the bullpen on one day of rest to get the last four outs. Then we break down and preview all four Division Series. The Yankees head down to Tampa to face the AL East champion Rays, and the question hanging over the whole thing is whether we see Aaron Judge back out on the field. The White Sox go to Cleveland for the first-ever October meeting between the two franchises, where Parker Messick and Gavin Williams have to quiet a White Sox team that has been slugging and entertaining all year. The Padres go to Milwaukee in what we think is the most fun series of the round: can the white-hot Padres keep pace with the best regular-season team in baseball, and Tatis vs. J Miz is must-watch television. And the Braves head to Los Angeles to try to stop a three-peat in its tracks, which is a tall order against a staff rolling out Skubal, Yamamoto and Snell with Glasnow waiting in the wings. We'll make our picks and get you prepared for what should be a great Division Series round.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro & Wild Card Series are Over(02:25) Yankees vs. Red Sox WC Recap(15:15) Astros vs. White Sox WC Recap(22:25) Padres vs. Cubs WC Recap(29:36) Braves vs. Phillies WC Recap(36:51) Rays vs. Yankees ALDS Preview(45:34) Guardians vs. White Sox ALDS Preview(50:44) Brewers vs. Padres NLDS Preview(55:50) Dodgers vs. Braves NLDS Preview(01:02:00) Picks Recap & StatpadNew episodes weekly. Wild Card Preview: Yanks-Sox Round 2 & The AL West Disgrace | SWNP Ep. 10

Twelve teams left, playoff baseball has arrived. The bracket is set, so we start where the whole thing starts: four Wild Card series, 2 PM to past midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday. Six of these twelve playoff teams bottomed out at some point. The Phillies were 9-19. The White Sox were 11-17. The Astros were 19-30 and won a division at 81-81, the worst full-season division winner in the history of baseball, taking the title off the 2005 Padres after 21 years. The Padres themselves were 50-53 on July 24 and went 41-18 the rest of the way.Red Sox and Yankees for the second October in a row, Schlittler on the mound with a 1.95 ERA and two earned runs in his career against Boston, and Aaron Judge having played seven games since May. Do we see Judge take the field in the Wild Card round? Plus all four series broken down with the pitching matchups and head-to-heads, our Wild Card predictions, and an end-of-season nugget run with Verlander's goodbye, Colson Montgomery's 225 strikeouts, Gabriel Moreno's batting title, Mickey Gasper outhomering Vlad Jr., and the Angels finally losing 100.Keep it locked all season long, and come hang with the boys as they take their group chat baseball reference ramblings to the world.Baseball for sickos.CHAPTERS(00:00) Intro & The Bracket is Set!(08:50) Red Sox at Yankees Preview(20:53) White Sox at Astros Preview(33:33) Phillies at Braves Preview(42:27) Cubs at Padres Preview(52:45) Wild Card Predictions(54:22) End of Season Stat Nuggets(01:01:16) StatpadTwo episodes this week.
