Why Creatives are criticised – and how it traumatises us | Diary Ep. 13

Ever wondered why creative ideas are so often criticised – and rarely encouraged? Well, here’s one of my early attemps at an explanation. It only happened by accident while I was writing about a real life creative project that got in the way of my thesis … I’m curious to find out what you think of the whole criticism thing and the evolution of the creative demons. We’ll get back to Freud and the demons of creativity in the next and a later episode, when we discuss Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art and Mihály Csíkszentmihályi’s Creativity.Feel free to subscribe if you don’t want to miss them. The Fool against the rest of the world. An inner contest, because no decision has been made, and a wholehearted decision is no longer possible. The creative is no longer deciding for or against their idea, for or against their concept (which doesn’t even exist yet)—with the appearance of the rational critic and their possibly logical arguments about time, resources, and relevance, the creative is deciding for or against reason and the world of adults. One’s own idea, one’s own vision is demoted to an illusion, a daydream, a castle in the air. If you want to know how the project continues, you can subscribe to this podcast, it’s free! A Playable Tarot for Empowerment? | Ep. 10

A boring episode, but terribly important, because right here I actually got the idea to use the French suits forthe creative tarot. Perfectly logical if you look at tarot from a designer’s perspective: proper playing cards have a strict graphical system, just modern esoteric tarot (meaning everything that’s based on the RWS) kind of lost it along the way, placing symbolism and imagery center stage. Well, since I’m a lover of everything logical, it makes total sense to look at playing cards rather than tarot cards … Let me know what you think and if you like, name your favourite tarot deck! »I’m of the opinion that perfection doesn’t mean adding more and more, but taking away everything that isn’t strictly necessary. Reduction. Essentialism. In this spirit, I might come up with a symbol for the Cups/Mirrors or some kind of graphic system so that only the image and somehow the number and element appear on the card. Perhaps distributed in the top-left and bottom-right corners, like in a deck of playing cards. I like that. Always have. It calms me. And it allows you to fan the cards out in your hand and see their values. It makes them playable, come to think of it. Maybe I’ll even use the symbols from the French or German suits as a foundation?« If you want to know how the project continues, you can subscribe to this podcast, it’s free! IV THE KING – The Fool unlocks a Superpower?

So now the Fool lives happily ever after at the court of the Great King. But then he discovers something called a li-ba-ry or something and there are these things called books. Very strange! Find out what happens when the Fool has an accident in the library – and how that changes his fate. »»Very well, Fool. I was hoping that with the help of this book, you would learn card tricks and sorcery with which you could entertain us in the future. But I seem to have been mistaken. If you cannot read, then it is of no use.« The King shakes his head in resignation. The Fool doesn’t quite understand: »I don’t know. If I can read, can I then do sorcery?« Sorcery. Magic. Wizard. And card tricks. Does this have something to do with that card the Queen gave him upon his arrival? Card tricks. What did the Magician say? Trickster. Can one become a Wizard with a book?« If you want to know how the tale continues, you can subscribe to this show, it’s free! Here on Substack you find the Diary as a podcast. Tarot without the Esoteric Fluff: Old Tarot Decks? | Ep. 8

Have you ever wondered what tarot cards were like before the all overpowering and in my opinion completely overrated Rider Waite Smith deck became the tarot standard? Well, once the postman had delivered my parcels, I went down the rabbit hole of the Tarot de Marseille and Visconti-Sforza Tarot, still trying to create a concept for my own indie tarot deck. Spoiler: It didn’t quite become as clear as I hoped with the decks. But in this episode I finally gave myself permission wo leave all the esoteric woo-woo fluff behind and create a tarot deck, that’s based on …… Listen to find out. ;)And let me know what you think! »The theme of the card (the card themes were already pretty much set and are being reviewed in this process) is, accordingly, Serendipity. Destiny or chance would also have worked, but for the fiery Wands, it’s Serendipity. Being in the right place at the right time – or something. The Cups answer: »I let go, I let it flow.« and the card is called Letting Go. Harmony from chaos does not arise from frantic effort but rather from letting things take their course. They just fall into place. Like water. The river finds its bed and flows to the sea. Always. The Swords exclaim: »Now everything makes sense!« – a eureka moment, the card is called Clarity. Thinking, researching, gaining distance, and at some point, usually in the shower, you have a bright moment, a light bulb goes on, and suddenly everything fits. The Pentacles answer: »I’m working on it. Perfecting it.« and the card is called Project. You also have to do something for harmony to emerge from chaos. The proof of this is every dirty sock that has ever landed on the floor.« If you want to know how the project continues, you can subscribe to this podcast, it’s free!
