    The Farmers of Luzon

Two point nineteen million Filipinos leave the country for work every year. But the ones who stay, the ones who feed everyone else, are disappearing. The average Filipino rice farmer is fifty-seven years old. Seventy percent are aging. Their children are not coming back. In Episode Two of The Human Condition, we walk the fields of Nueva Ecija with Tata Manny, a seventy-five-year-old farmer, and his carabao Kasoy. We follow the rice from a three AM market in Cabanatuan through eleven human hands to a plate in Tondo, to the seed bank at Central Luzon State University where ten thousand varieties of rice wait at minus twenty degrees. We sit with the Rice Tariffication Law of twenty nineteen that crashed the price of palay from twenty pesos a kilo to nine. We stand with Jun, the grandson, at the edge of the field, and ask: who will inherit the land, and what becomes of the cities when the countryside empties?
