The Uncharted

HustleStudios Podcast Network

The Uncharted investigates the mysteries history left behind. Each episode explores one unresolved historical question—from vanished civilizations and missing expeditions to unexplained disasters, forgotten settlements, disputed discoveries, and people who seemed to disappear without a trace. Through archaeological evidence, historical records, academic research, maps, eyewitness accounts, and competing theories, The Uncharted reconstructs what we know, identifies what remains uncertain, and follows the clues that still challenge historians today. What happened to the people who lived here? Why did a civilization suddenly collapse? Which explanation best fits the surviving evidence? And how much of the story has been lost forever? With rigorous research and narrative storytelling, The Uncharted turns historical investigation into an immersive journey through the places where fact, mystery, and possibility still overlap. Some parts of history are documented. Others remain uncharted. Produced by HustleStudios Podcast Network. The Antikythera Mechanism — The World's First Computer Lost at Sea

In 1900, a Greek sponge diver pulled a corroded bronze lump from a Roman-era shipwreck off the island of Antikythera. Eighteen months later, a scholar cracked it open and saw a gear wheel — a perfect bronze gear dated to roughly 150 years before Christ. What was inside would prove to be the most sophisticated machine that survived the fall of Rome. A box of precision-cut gears the size of a shoe box. A device that could predict eclipses, track the four-year Olympic cycle, and model the irregular motion of the Moon across the sky. An analog computer from the second century before Christ. Two thousand years before anything comparable appeared in Europe again. In this episode of The Uncharted, we follow the full story: the sponge divers' storm-driven discovery, the slow recognition of what the lumps of bronze contained, the hundred-year detective work that finally decoded the mechanism, the walk-through of how the device worked, the mystery of who built it, and the question of why such technology disappeared for fifteen hundred years. We end with what we still do not know — and what might still be waiting on the ocean floor.
