Saying Yes as a Single Woman: Foster Care, Adoption & Multiethnic Families | Joy Bey

What does it look like to say yes to foster care when the journey becomes harder than you expected? In this episode of Fostered in Unity, Greg Helton sits down with Joy Bey, an adoptive mother and associate pastor at Relentless Church, to talk honestly about her journey from considering foster care as a single woman to fostering and eventually adopting two biological siblings.Joy shares why foster parents need more than good intentions—they need a community willing to walk through the long, difficult seasons with them. She also discusses the danger of the “hero” mindset in foster care, honoring a child’s birth family, and why love and safety are not always the same thing. The conversation also explores transracial and multiethnic foster and adoptive families, including the importance of educating yourself, building diverse relationships before placement, asking uncomfortable questions, and being willing to admit what you don’t know.Ultimately, Joy shares what has sustained her through the hardest moments: her yes was never simply to foster care or adoption. Finding Your Place in Foster Care and Adoption | Fostered in Unity Podcast

Welcome to the first episode of Fostered in Unity. Host Greg Helton sits down with Keith Fortier to share why this podcast exists: to help Christians, churches, nonprofits, and community partners come together to care for vulnerable children and families. Greg and Keith share their different paths into foster care and adoption. Keith grew up in a family that fostered and later became a foster and adoptive parent. Greg describes how his family’s journey unfolded more gradually, including seasons when the next step was unclear. Together, they make room for an essential question: if you cannot foster or adopt, where might you still have a part to play? They also discuss how prayer and relationships helped bring organizations together through NC for FAMs, and why this show will share stories of both faithfulness and hardship. Future conversations will feature families, church leaders, nonprofit workers, and others serving across the foster care community. If this work has been on your heart, start here. Listen, ask questions, and consider the next faithful step you can take alongside others.
