Are Caravans Getting too Heavy? | AL-KO Towing Expert | Episode 1

Are modern caravans becoming too heavy—and how much usable payload do owners really have once the van is ready to tour? In the first episode of Under the Awning, host Steph Pond sits down with an AL-KO technical expert to unpack caravan weights, payload, towing safety and the responsibilities of manufacturers, dealers and owners. They discuss whether advertised payloads are realistic, how dealer-fitted accessories can reduce carrying capacity, why tare weight is often misunderstood and whether a legally compliant towing combination is necessarily a safe one. The conversation also covers suspension upgrades, tow-vehicle suitability, individual caravan weighing and what every buyer should ask to see before signing a contract. If you own a caravan, tow regularly or are preparing to buy your next van, this is a conversation worth hearing. Under the Awning is a What’s Up Downunder podcast hosted by journalist Steph Pond, featuring honest conversations with the people who build, tow and live in Australia’s caravans and RVs.
