F*CK! I’M 50 started with a pretty simple question: where the bloody hell did the last 20 years go? One minute you’re busy working, raising kids and dealing with life, the next you wake up and realise — F*ck! I'm 50! Our kids hardly need us anymore, yet our parents need us more than ever before. My name's Paul Burfitt. My mates call me Burf. I’m not a guru, not a life coach and certainly not an expert. I’m just a bloke from Queensland who’s decided I’m not going to keep putting everything off. So I’m talking to people from around Australia and other places about all the stuff that comes up at this stage of life — family, money, health, work, relationships, ambitions, regrets, f*ck-ups, starting again and figuring out what makes you happy. Some conversations will be with everyday people who have great stories. Others will be with people you already know from sport, media, business or somewhere completely unexpected. And every now and then I’ll bring in someone who genuinely knows a thing or two on the subject they’re talking. I’ve got a podcast and a little YouTube channel set up. You’re invited to come along for the ride as I start ticking off a few things I’ve spent too many years saying I’d do “one day”. I'm sure some people will think it's a brilliant idea. Plenty more probably won’t. But either way here we go, and remember this is a hate free zone so play nice… There's sure to be some spills, thrills and the occasional disaster as I try to make up for a bit of lost time. Most of all remember, F*CK! I’M 50 isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about finally asking the questions — and doing something about them.

    My Dad’s Got Dementia

Please note: This episode was originally published under the show's previous name, Fi50. The podcast is now CONDITIONS APPLY, hosted by Paul Burfitt. The original conversation has been preserved. My dad, Scott, is in his late 70s and has end-stage dementia. He’s still here, but in many ways we’re already losing him. That’s hard to say—and even harder to watch. Dad is a gentle, quiet and unassuming bloke who taught me a hell of a lot. We travelled around Australia together through my years working in motor racing and video production, with Dad often acting as my right-hand man. Now he lives in a nursing home in Melbourne. When I visit, there’s sometimes a glint in his eye that makes me think he knows I belong—but the truth is, I don’t know whether he recognises me anymore. In this short and very personal episode, I talk about what dementia has done to Dad and the effect it has had on Mum, my brother, our kids and the rest of the family. But this isn’t about feeling sorry for ourselves. Mum and Dad spent years travelling around Australia and doing the things they wanted to do while they still could. Watching Dad fade has reinforced one of the biggest lessons he ever taught me: don’t wait for tomorrow. Spend time with your parents. Do the things you keep talking about. If the sun comes up and you’ve still got a heartbeat, it’s a pretty bloody good day—so get on with it. I love you, Dad. This is F*CK! I’M 50. Nancy D’Agostino: Finding Yourself After Putting Everyone Else First

Please note: This episode was originally published under the show's previous name, Fi50. The podcast is now CONDITIONS APPLY, hosted by Paul Burfitt. The original conversation has been preserved. Nancy D’Agostino is a mum, wife, singing teacher, author, illustrator and performer. Yep, there’s a lot going on. But behind everything Nancy has achieved is a story about family expectations, responsibility and what can happen when years of putting other people first leave you wondering where you went. Nancy grew up working in her family’s furniture business and studied accounting because it was the secure path her parents wanted for her. Quietly, though, she kept pursuing the thing she truly loved: singing. We talk about building a career as a singing teacher, raising a family and spending years helping care for ageing relatives. By the time Nancy reached 50, she had a beautiful family and a successful teaching career—but still felt that something was missing. She had spent so long caring for everyone else that she felt she had lost part of herself. Nancy shares how she finally drew a line, made room for her own ambitions and began turning decades of ideas into something lasting. That creative drive led to her children’s book series, Hullabaloo – The Funky Singing Monkey, along with her work as an author, illustrator and recording artist. This is a conversation about following your own path, finding yourself again and refusing to reach the later years of life wondering what might have happened if you’d had a crack. Starting Over After Divorce: Sebastian Foti on Fatherhood, Career Change & Midlife

Please note: This episode was originally published under the show's previous name, Fi50. The podcast is now CONDITIONS APPLY, hosted by Paul Burfitt. The original conversation has been preserved. After more than 20 years of marriage, Sebastian Foti found himself navigating divorce, raising three teenage children and working out what the next part of life should look like as he headed towards 50. In this episode of Fi50 — F*CK! I’M 50, Paul Burfitt sits down with his longtime mate on the waterfront in the Whitsundays, Queensland, for a candid conversation about starting over after divorce, fatherhood, friendship, career change and finding a better balance between work and life. A mechanical engineer who has spent much of his career in mining, Sebastian talks openly about the end of his marriage, becoming a single parent, the importance of having people to talk to and why honest advice from good friends helped him through a difficult period. They also talk about Sebastian’s decision to leave a demanding job filled with long hours and work travel for an even-time remote mining roster — giving him more genuine time with his children and more space for the things he enjoys. Cars are a big part of that life. Sebastian discusses restoring and building classic Fords, his involvement with the local Whitsundays car community and the annual car show at Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach, as well as why working on cars has become both a passion and a useful escape from everyday stress. The conversation moves through investing and financial regrets, parenting teenagers, being more present with family, redefining success in midlife, qigong meditation, salsa dancing and the value of deliberately doing things outside your comfort zone. Most importantly, Sebastian comes back to one simple lesson from his own experience: if you’re struggling, talk to someone — and if you see someone else struggling, take the time to listen. A genuine conversation about divorce, midlife change, fatherhood, work-life balance, friendship and discovering that starting again doesn’t mean starting from nothing. This is FI50 — F*CK! I’M 50.
