Skin Psych

Skin Psych Inc.

If you’ve ever canceled plans because of a breakout, avoided a mirror, or wondered why your skin has so much power over how you feel about yourself, this podcast is for you. We know a lot about how to treat acne. But what about everything else that comes with having it? Skin Psych is a podcast about the psychological experience of acne. Through conversations with experts and people who know the experience firsthand, Skin Psych looks beyond how to clear our skin and asks a different question: Can we change the way we experience acne, even when we can’t control it?

Episode 3 – More Than a Bad Habit: Dr. Laura Chackes on the Psychology of Skin Picking and Acne

Skin picking seems like a skin problem. After all, the evidence is right there on our faces. But what if a big part of what’s going on isn’t happening on our skin at all? In this episode, I talk with psychologist Dr. Laura Chackes about what happens in the brain when the urge to pick takes over. We explore why picking can bring relief, why having acne can make the urge even harder to resist, why “just stop touching your face” isn’t particularly helpful when we haven’t answered the bigger question: why do we want to pick in the first place? Because sometimes understanding what we’re doing to our skin starts with understanding what’s happening in our brain. ABOUT DR. LAURA CHACKES: Dr. Laura Chackes is a licensed psychologist and founder of the Center for Mindfulness & CBT in St. Louis, specializing in OCD and body-focused repetitive behaviors, including skin picking. She has been leading therapy groups for people with BFRBs since 2012 and developed a mindfulness-based group treatment for BFRBs that is currently being studied in collaboration with UCLA researcher Dr. Erika Nurmi.
