    4. Getting to the Heart of It

    You could be carrying a genetic risk for a deadly aortic disease and have no idea. Find out how Dr. Jason Glotzbach and his team are using one of the only databases in the world linking family trees to medical records, not only to identify risk before it’s too late, but to build a future, brick-by-brick, where generations of families could receive personalized care based on their unique genetic risk.

    5. Cool Ideas Die Alone

    Every screw, plate, or synthetic material in a routine surgery represents years of engineering most patients never see. Dr. Jill Shea has learned that even the coolest idea can die alone if it never makes contact with a clinician. As director of the Department of Surgery’s Research Core Lab, she turns a surgeon’s “life would be so much better if...” into reality, from an MRIguided treatment for breast cancer, to synthetic bone fillers, to a drug-releasing nerve implant.     6. Learning to Lead

    Most surgeons spend their careers teaching the next generation, with almost no formal training in how to do it. Dr. Dalton Hegeholz remembers day one of residency: handed a medical student and told simply to “teach,” with no idea how. Now pursuing a Master’s in Health Professions Education alongside his surgical residency, he’s researching what actually helps people learn, starting with why “good job” isn’t feedback. Find out why he believes learning to teach doesn’t just make a better educator, but a better surgeon.

    7. Closing the Cancer Gap

    One in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime, and as more patients need specialized surgical cancer care, having enough trained surgeons to provide it becomes critical. Find out how Dr. T. Clark Gamblin and Dr. Kirstyn Brownson are building two new fellowships, in complex general surgical oncology and breast surgical oncology, to make sure that care is there when patients need it.
