Prayas

Phir Se explores what it takes to rebuild your life after prison and protective custody. Re-entering society is far more than walking out of custody. It means finding a place to live, getting the documents that prove who you are, rebuilding relationships, finding work, and navigating a world that may not be ready to accept you back. Told through the experience of social workers, they take us inside the everyday realities of rehabilitation and reintegration. From prisons, courts and shelters to family homes, workplaces and government offices, we get to understand what it takes to start your life again, with opportunity, independence and dignity.  This podcast is created by Prayas, a pioneering demonstrative project by the Centre for Criminology and Justice at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences that helps those who are caught in India’s criminal justice system.

    Rehabilitation is a Right

On this episode of Phir Se, we find out what it takes to re-enter society after prison. Rehabilitation requires a stable shelter, a way to earn, and relationships that support someone through their crises. From the fragile emergency phase right after release, to the quiet, radical initiative that transformed the lives of those who leave prison: Prayas's NGO placement programme. With over thirty years of work in the criminal justice system, this model has done what the private sector couldn’t - to take people in without judgment, give them confidence, cultivate their skills, and provide room to rebuild a life, not just survive one. If Family Support Isn’t There, We Are

In this episode of Phir Se, we explore the role family plays in helping people rebuild their lives after prison and the difficult realities when those relationships cannot provide the shelter, connection and stability they need. From the impact of incarceration on children and the different ways men and women experience family acceptance, to the loneliness of starting over, and how Prayas social workers often find themselves filling the gaps left by family.   To reach out to Prayas, email prayas@tiss.ac.in To support Prayas, donate https://tiss.ac.in/prayas_donate/ For more information about Prayas and their work, Website: https://prayas.tiss.ac.in Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tiss.prayas  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/prayas_cjs Prayas Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@prayasyoutube3779 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/prayas-a-field-action-project-of-tiss-28a2821b6/   CREDITS: Creative Directors: Vijay Raghavan & Sharon Menezes Social Workers: Aruna Nimse, Nilesh Prabhakar Gore, Reena Harilal Jaiswal, Siddarth Dolas, & Shailendra Ghodke This is a Maed in India production. Without Documentation, What is Your Identity?

In this episode of Phir Se, we look at the most important and the least spoken about step of reintegration: documentation and how it helps build your identity. For someone leaving prison, an Aadhaar card, a ration card, a PAN card or a birth certificate forms the foundation of their life outside. It’s necessary for everything, from banking, housing and job opportunities. We also look at how paperwork can be tedious and demoralising, while the system can make it difficult for them to find their footing in society.   To reach out to Prayas, email prayas@tiss.ac.in To support Prayas, donate https://tiss.ac.in/prayas_donate/ For more information about Prayas and their work, Website: https://prayas.tiss.ac.in Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tiss.prayas  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/prayas_cjs Prayas Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@prayasyoutube3779 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/prayas-a-field-action-project-of-tiss-28a2821b6/   CREDITS: Creative Directors: Vijay Raghavan & Sharon Menezes Social Workers: Prashant Gowade & Meenal Pathare This is a Maed in India production.
