The Intersection of Politics and Theology

Around election season, at the airing of this episode it is the 2026 Midterm Election cycle, we see the full pageantry of political gamesmanship on display; including, but not limited to, the invoking of religion and faith in political ads, campaign speeches, and the obligatory, “God bless America,” ending to each campaign stop. What happens when a candidate for office steps beyond the meaningless religious platitudes of politics as usual and firmly sets their campaign upon a distinct “Christian” identity? What if that “Christian” identity is so far outside of the mainstream of what could remotely be labeled orthodox that it is almost unrecognizable to the majority of sincere Christian adherents? In this 2026 Midterm Election cycle we have been given one such test case…Texas candidate for Senator, James Talarico. Candidate Talarico has spent considerable time arguing his progressive democratic ideology from what he considers a “Christian” worldview, but is it? In this episode, which is largely based upon the previous episode of “Thinking Politically-Biblically,” David and Darren will examine a video posted by the Talarico campaign in which the candidate himself is “preaching” in his home church. David and Darren examine the video in its entirety examining it against the backdrop of orthodox Christianity and the nature of the Gospel. The full video posted by the Talarico campaign is linked below.

    Thinking Politically-Biblically

How are Christians to think about politics? With an ever-increasing polarization of our culture it is easy for logical and thoughtful conversations about politics to take a backseat to the emotional and populist rhetoric of the day. However, Christians are called to a higher standard, one that considers a biblical worldview and the cause of The Great Commission. In this episode, David and Darren discuss the framework for how Christians should engage politics without divorcing it from their biblical worldview. This discussion is based on a paper written by David submitted for publication.

Mission Trips: Viable Ministry or Fancy Christian Vacations?

Mission trips have long been a staple of the ministry platforms in many evangelical churches. However, some of these "missions" end up being nothing more than a church sponsored vacation with a little bit of community service sprinkled in to say we have done the Lord's work. In this episode, David and Darren discuss the viability...and yes, the importance...of mission trips for individual believers and for the health of the church! This episode was filmed while on a mission trip with First Baptist Church Neches to Belize for an evangelistically focused ministry. About an hour in to the recording there may or may not be a demon! Seriously guys...there was absolutely no one around where the guys were recording with this event happens!

    Social Media, Part 2

In this second part of our social media series we take a deep look at these platforms and their use as the new public square. How do Christians navigate this new forum with so many negative consequences attached to it? One of the issues that has manifested in the church is the influence of large-scale content creators and the "cult of celebrity" that so easily sways the way many people shape their worldviews. This leads to a great conclusion about the necessity and importance of Christians staying connected to a local church for discipleship, service, accountability, and community. Enjoy!
