How to Talk to Your Kids About Money After Divorce with Rachel Duck

Rachel Duck rebuilt after divorce and COVID hit at once, and shares how to talk to your kids about money along the way. Talking to your kids about money matters most when life doesn’t go to plan. Financial strategist Rachel Duck learned it in March 2020, when her divorce papers and the COVID shutdown arrived together and her 40-year plan fell apart. She rebuilt, wrote A Single Mom’s Guide to Financial Freedom, and teaches a 7-step framework that starts with mindset, not math. In this episode, Rachel joins Julia Myers to talk about reframing scarcity scripts, defining your financial freedom number, and why she answers her kids with “how can you afford it?” instead of an allowance. Key Takeaways: Why your money mindset comes before the numbersHow to answer “can I have this?” with “how can you afford it?”Why your kids need to watch you walk toward freedom out loudAbout Rachel Duck: Rachel Duck is the founder of JME Investment Group, a consultant, author, and speaker with more than two decades in real estate, investing, and financial strategy. Find Your Purpose, Not Your Passion with Gabrielle Bosché

Is “follow your passion” actually good advice? Author and speaker Gabrielle Bosché says it’s only half the story. In this episode, host Dr. Julia Myers sits down with Gabrielle to unpack why purpose, not passion, is the better guide for your career, your money, and your family. Find your purpose and stop chasing passion. Gabrielle Bosché shares a simple 3-question framework to find your purpose and help your family find theirs. Gabrielle’s path shaped how she thinks about purpose. She grew up filling tithing envelopes, lost her family’s home in the 2008 recession, and couldn’t afford college until an anonymous donor stepped in to help. This episode is for parents, grandparents, and mentors who want to help the next generation find direction, make wise financial decisions, and live with purpose. Key Takeaways: Why “follow your passion” is incomplete adviceHow to turn your purpose into a family decision-making rubricHow to rethink college, debt, and career choices through the lens of purposeDinner table conversation starters for raising capable, confident kidsAbout Gabrielle Bosché: Gabrielle Bosché published her first book at 17 and has since written seven books, delivered two TEDx Talks, and shared stages with Malcolm Gladwell, John Maxwell, Dave Ramsey, and Rudy Giuliani. She has spoken for Google, the CIA, Microsoft, Audi, Comcast, Expedia, and eight U.S. Naval Bases. Why High Income Isn’t Financial Security with Dr. Bill Yount

Money conversations with your kids matter more than your income. Emergency physician Dr. Bill Yount learned that the hard way. After decades of high earnings, single-digit savings rates, and silence about money at home, a lawsuit at age 50 forced a financial reset. Today he’s financially independent, semi-retired, and passing on wisdom and wealth. In this episode, Bill joins host Julia Myers to talk about breaking a family money story and rebuilding trust with teens and young adults. Key Takeaways: How to break a family money story and start honest money conversations with your kidsWhy generational wisdom matters more than generational wealthWhy legacy is what you leave in people, not to themAbout Dr. Bill Yount: Bill has worked in emergency medicine since 1992 and is a husband, father of twin sons, and dog dad to two labradoodles. At 50, he realized he was financially illiterate, burned out, and living paycheck to paycheck despite a high income. He paused, planned, and pivoted, reaching financial independence a decade later. He now co-hosts the podcast Catching Up to FI and mentors late starters who feel behind or alone. How to Talk to Your Kids About Money

Most parents want to talk to their kids about money, but don't know where to start. In this episode, host Julia Myers sits down with her 12-year-old son Mason to show what that conversation can look like. Mason shares what "generational wisdom" means to him, why kids need to understand money before they inherit it, and how he thinks about deals. Then Julia gives him a virtual $50 and asks: What would he do with it, and why? His answer (invest some, give some away, spend some on Legos he won't get bored of) opens up a conversation about compounding, generosity, and making decisions on purpose. The big idea is that it isn't about how a kid spends the money. It's about how they decide. Julia and Mason also talk about needs vs. wants, why price isn't the same as value, and how their family uses a Family Constitution to turn values into goals, including their biggest Operation Christmas Child donation yet. If you're a parent wondering how to start, or a kid stuck in the back seat of the carpool line, this episode gives you the questions to start tonight. KEY INSIGHTS ✔️ Money is a tool, not a measure of what matters. Teach kids that money shouldn't matter more than time and relationships. ✔️ Think before you act, and think before you spend. Slowing down before a purchase is a financial literacy skill kids can build early. ✔️ Price isn't value. A good deal depends on what you want, what it costs, and how long you'll use it. ✔️ The $50 question shows how your child thinks. Saving, giving, and spending reveal their values and decision-making, so there are no wrong answers. TIME STAMPS 00:00 Meet Mason 01:30 What is generational wisdom? 03:30 Why kids need to learn about money before they inherit 05:30 Money is a tool 08:00 What makes a good deal? 10:30 The $50 challenge: invest, give, spend 13:00 Think before you spend 14:30 Why should kids care about money? 16:00 Does price equal value? 19:23 Family values, goals, and Operation Christmas Child Generational Wisdom is the show for parents raising great kids in a world where more is never enough. Teaching Kids About Money: You Can't Buy Everything

Teaching kids about money doesn't have to be complicated. In this Generational Wisdom Kids Version episode, host Dr. Julia Myers sits down with her 10-year-old daughter, Lena, for an unscripted conversation about saving, spending, giving, and what money can't buy. Lena explains her three accounts (spending, savings, and giving), how she'd give away $1,000, and how she'd split money between spending, saving, and giving. She also tackles debt and where money comes from. The episode closes with a true story from a Boston airport. Julia and Lena are stuck on a standby list, trying to get home early, and no amount of money can buy them a seat. The lesson: money isn't the end goal, and some of life's best things can't be purchased. This episode is for parents who want to start money conversations with elementary and tween kids, and for kids who want to hear another kid explain it. KEY INSIGHTS ✔️ You can buy anything, but you can't buy everything. Lena's tongue twister is a simple way to teach limits and the difference between a want and a wish. ✔️ Save, spend, give. Lena works out a 70% spend, 20% save, 10% give split out loud. Julia notes the numbers shift as kids grow and their needs change. ✔️ Kids can explain debt in their own words. Asking your child to define money terms shows what they actually understand, and where the gaps are. ✔️ Money can't buy everything. Julia's story shows that patience and trust matter when a seat, a result, or an opportunity isn't for sale. ✔️ Not knowing is okay. When Lena couldn't answer where money comes from, Julia modeled curiosity over perfection. TIME STAMPS 00:00 Meet Lena: why legacy is what we leave in our kids 03:00 Spending, savings, and giving accounts 19:00 "You can buy anything, but you can't buy everything" 21:00 What is debt? What is Generational Wisdom?

What's wrong with wanting to build generational wealth? In Episode 2 of Generational Wisdom, Dr. Julia Myers tackles the question she hears most. She explains why money lands badly in unprepared hands, from lottery winners to student athletes with NIL deals, and why wisdom is the missing piece. She shares the six-part Generational Wisdom Playbook from her FinCon talk: influences, skills, values, privilege, discernment, and legacy. Then her kids Lena (10) and Mason (12) share, unscripted, why money is a tool and why they think every family should talk about it. If you want your kids to inherit your wisdom, not just your wealth, start here. Your one step this week: pick a pillar and ask your kids one question about it. TEDx Link: https://juliamyers.com/tedx?utm_source=julia&utm_medium=textreplacement&utm_campaign=tedx_launch&utm_content=link KEY TAKEAWAYS ✔️ It isn't money that's the problem; it's the love of money. ✔️ Wealth that lands in unprepared hands rarely lasts. ✔️ The Generational Wisdom Playbook has six parts: influences, skills, values, privilege, discernment, and legacy. ✔️ Kids already know money is a tool, not something to value over time and relationships. ✔️ You can buy anything, but you can't buy everything.  CHAPTERS 00:00 What's wrong with wanting generational wealth? 04:02 The six-part Generational Wisdom Playbook 12:31 Lena and Mason answer: why should anyone listen? 14:14 Why should kids care about money? 14:49 "You can buy anything, but you can't buy everything" Generational Wisdom is the show for parents raising great kids in a world where more is never enough. Why I Almost Never Launched This Parenting Podcast

Is procrastination really just perfectionism in disguise? In this first episode of Generational Wisdom, Dr. Julia Myers tells the story of the show she almost didn't make. She plays her first, imperfect podcast recording from 2025 next to the one-take version she recorded a year later at FinCon 2026, and shares what a year of bloopers, retakes, and more than 25 guest interviews taught her about perfectionism and procrastination. Along the way, she goes back to applying to pharmacy school before she felt ready, and to being accepted to speak at TEDx Lakeshore Drive. Both taught her the same thing: you don't get clarity and then take action. The action hands you the clarity. Then she introduces her framework for rewriting the money story your family inherited: the three no's- no skills, no ownership, and no expectations. And she leaves you with the question at the center of the show: is everything you've built a blessing or a burden? In this episode: - Why procrastination often hides inside perfectionism - Why action creates clarity, not the other way around - The three no's and how to pick one to work on this week Chapters 00:00 Why start when you're scared 00:42 Procrastination as perfectionism in disguise 01:10 My first podcast recording at FinCon 2025 06:27 Applying to speak at TEDx 07:24 The pharmacy school story 14:02 Blessing or burden 15:08 The three no's Generational Wisdom is the show for parents raising great kids in a world where more is never enough.
