What Bob Marley's Image Leaves Out

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Bob Marley is instantly recognizable. But what disappears when an artist becomes a symbol? This episode separates Rastafari faith, cannabis, and reggae rather than treating them as interchangeable. From musical training with Joe Higgs and the making of Catch a Fire to the One Love Peace Concert, it asks how to understand the work and circumstances behind the familiar image. Religious beliefs are described as beliefs, not medical claims. This is cultural history, not encouragement to use drugs. Related episode: Can a Song Change an Election? Can a Song Change an Election? Chile, 1988

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! In Chile in 1988, an accessible pop jingle became part of the No campaign. Diminished History follows the music's creative intentions, public participation and the practical work surrounding a historic vote. We distinguish the October 1988 plebiscite from the March 1990 handover, and the composer's account of his aims from a measured effect on voters. Original percussive demonstrations make one musical idea audible without reproducing the campaign song. AI-narrated. Bob Dylan's Nobel Prize: Can a Song Be Literature?

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Why was Bob Dylan awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature? Marking the tenth anniversary of the October 13, 2016 announcement, Diminished History explores the literary craft of songwriting and the role of the performing voice. We examine how repeated questions and accumulating testimony work in two Dylan songs, look back to oral poetry, and consider Dylan's own Nobel responses. Can lyrics be judged as words on a page? And is recognising literary achievement the same as agreeing with a prize committee's choice? AI-narrated. Seikilos: The Oldest Complete Song and Its Message About Life

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! The Seikilos epitaph preserves a short ancient Greek song with its musical notation. What does its message mean, and what can we really know about a melody carved into stone nearly 2,000 years ago? Hear our simple modern realization, follow the pitch and duration clues, and explore the difference between Seikilos’s conventional “oldest surviving complete song” label and the older Hurrian hymn from Ugarit. Dating is approximate; the monument’s intended recipient and funerary interpretation remain uncertain. The English rendering of the ancient Greek poem is our own. The musical demonstration is a modern synthesis from a public-domain transcription, not a recording from antiquity or a claim of exact historical timbre/tempo. Sergiu Celibidache: Can a Recording Preserve Music?

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! Can pressing play bring back a musical experience? Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache argued that music belonged to a particular moment, room and audience. Yet the recordings he distrusted now help new listeners discover his work. Explore his postwar Berlin breakthrough, his ideas about musical tempo and the paradox of preserving a live event. The film The Yellow Tie provides the timely connection between his life, music history and the philosophy of listening. His position is an argument to examine, not scientific proof that recorded music cannot be music. AI-narrated.
