Fighting MS Together: Stories of Strength and Resilience

In this episode, Brian welcomes Tariq, known as Thrax on TikTok, to share his personal journey with multiple sclerosis (MS). Both men, touched by this chronic illness, find strength in their shared experiences, highlighting the importance of community and understanding. The Diagnosis Journey Tariq recounts the unsettling moments leading up to his MS diagnosis in 2013 at just 33 years old. He describes the strange symptoms that first alerted him to something being wrong, including a crooked smile and muscle spasms. After a series of misdiagnoses and tests, he faced the sobering reality of living with MS: "They come back and they like, oh it's so sad, you know, it's like two or three doctor nurse and they clipboards and all that shit with their gowns on. And um, sorry, but you got uh multiple sclerosis..." The fear of the unknown is palpable in his words, as he reflects on the confusion and anxiety that often accompany such a life-altering diagnosis. Denial and Acceptance Both Brian and Tariq share their struggles with denial after their diagnoses. Tariq admits: "I was in denial for the longest time... I was still working and all of that shit, you know? So it didn't affect me enough to worry about it." They discuss how the progression of the disease can sometimes lead to a false sense of security, masking the realities of living with MS until it becomes harder to manage. The Power of Community A significant theme emerges around the power of community, especially on platforms like TikTok. Tariq reflects on how sharing his story and hearing others’ experiences has been transformative: "I learned more in the past twelve months on TikTok than I know in the whole thirteen years I had this internet." Both men emphasize the importance of connecting with others who understand the daily challenges of living with MS, highlighting the support and insights gained through shared stories. Understanding MS Brian reflects on his own journey and how critical it is for those outside the MS community to understand the diverse experiences of individuals living with the diseas. Running Through MS: Cheryl's Inspiring Marathon Journey

An inspiring conversation about resilience and advocacy in MS. Cheryl's story is a powerful testament to resilience in the face of adversity. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2006, she didn't let the condition define her. Instead, she continued to pursue her passion for running, completing marathons even after her diagnosis. ## The Diagnosis Journey Cheryl's symptoms began after an impressive marathon performance, with her arm feeling numb and painful. Initially dismissed as a sports injury, it took her ten months and multiple doctors before she received a definitive MS diagnosis. "I wish I didn’t have that whole ten-month span where MS was getting worse. I could have started on DMT ten months prior," she reflects. ## Advocating for Oneself Navigating the healthcare system can be daunting, especially when faced with a chronic illness. Cheryl emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy, recounting how she pushed to see a specialist after her initial neurologist hesitated to diagnose her. "I'm just one of the hardest things for me is advocating for myself. I always say yes to everything. I don’t want any contradictions," she shared. ## Support from Loved Ones Cheryl's journey was also shaped by her supportive husband, Brian, who learned alongside her and encouraged her to pursue her passion for running despite her diagnosis. "He supported me through all of my crazy ideas running these marathons," she said. ## The Role of Exercise When discussing treatment options, Cheryl highlighted the importance of staying active. "I felt like I needed to take the daily injection because at least I'm doing something every day. I'm helping my body every day." Her experience underscores the evolving understanding of exercise as a critical part of living well with MS. ## Closing Thoughts Cheryl's story exemplifies the strength and perseverance of those living with chronic illnesses. She reminds us that while the journey may be filled with challenges, it is possible to continue pursuing our passions and advocating for ourselves.
