“I Tried It Your Way, God”: A Coach’s Turning Point - Called 2 Coach - Ben McMillan

Fired in January. State champion in May. Neither one defines who he is. On this episode of Called 2 Coach, hosts Paul Regan and Charlie Goss sit down with Ben McMillan, a 20-year teacher and coach who now serves full time with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Lincoln County, NC. Ben opens up about his 12 years as a head football coach, the winless season that tested his faith, the stress that landed him in the emergency room, and the day he was told he would no longer coach football at the school where his son grew up as a ball boy. What came next was a quiet Saturday morning, a clear call into ministry, and a state championship in golf just four months later. Ben shares how God used every hard season to prepare him to walk alongside coaches who are carrying the same weight he once did. If you're a coach in the middle of a tough season, this one is for you. In this episode: - What a week in FCA ministry really looks like - "God, I tried it your way" and what happened when he did it his own way - Finding identity in Christ instead of a coaching record - Practical ways for busy coaches to make time for God - How to connect with FCA in any sport, anywhere Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:24 Meet Ben McMillan 2:15 A day in the life of FCA staff and coach 5:31 The impact of faith on coaching and life 10:21 Balancing family, faith and career 15:16 Prayer and spiritual preparation 20:04 Overcoming setbacks in coaching 25:11 Community and mentorship 30:26 God's plan in life and coaching 35:23 From coaching to ministry 40:11 Lessons from difficult seasons 45:19 Encouragement for coaches and athletes 50:30 Getting involved with FCA 55:19 Final thoughts: What does it mean to be called to coach? Would That Be Enough? Called 2 Coach - Coach Nick Bazzle Recap

Paul and Charlie are back in the studio to recap their conversation with Coach Nick Bazzle. Coach Bazzle's story was so full that it took more than one episode to tell, and the two biggest takeaways from it carry through this whole episode. 1. God is working behind the scenes, even when we can't see it. Coach Bazzle left coaching for about a year, was miserable, and found his way back to where God wanted him. Paul and Charlie talk about their own seasons of stepping away, applying for jobs that didn't pan out, and doors God slammed shut for good reason. They walk through the story of Joseph in Genesis ("What you meant for evil, God meant for good") and the book of Ruth, and they share a reminder that sometimes you just have to wait until the end of the movie. 2. Are we leaning on God during uncertainty and hard times? Starting from Proverbs 3:5–6 and James 1 ("Count it all joy…"), they talk about why "I got this" may be the most dangerous thing a man can say, and why it's freeing to admit you don't have what it takes. They also cover the thick skin coaching requires, what Facing the Giants gets right about the profession, and why winning doesn't fix everything. They close with a question for every coach to chew on: If you knew God was pleased with your faithfulness, but you never got the outcome you wanted, would that be enough? Scripture referenced: Genesis 39–50, Ruth 2:3, James 1:2–3, Proverbs 3:5–6, Psalm 46:1, Ephesians 6:10–11 Support the show

The Cost of Coaching With Conviction - Called 2 Coach - Intro Ep.3

What happens when winning and making disciples start pulling in opposite directions? Charlie Goss and Paul Regan tackle the pressure every coach feels, but rarely says out loud—the tension between success on the field and faithfulness to a greater calling. This conversation goes straight at the question behind every whistle, lineup decision, and late-night doubt: if the scoreboard disappeared tomorrow, what would your players remember about you? Charlie and Paul unpack the real purpose of coaching, why influence matters more than stats, and how a coach can pursue excellence without losing sight of eternity. You’ll hear: Why the urge to win can become an idol How coaching becomes a unique discipleship opportunity What servant leadership looks like in a real practice The difference between demanding excellence and leading with ego Practical ways to talk about Jesus without turning it into a performance Charlie also shares the personal story that sparked this podcast in the first place—a championship season, a moment of frustration, and the realization that even success can leave you asking, “Is this really enough?” From there, the episode builds toward a bigger vision for coaches, players, parents, and anyone who feels the pressure to perform while trying to live out their faith. If you coach, teach, lead, or simply care about influencing young people well, this episode will challenge your motives and sharpen your perspective. It’s honest, convicting, and built for anyone trying to be faithful when the pressure to win is loud. Support the show

Putting God First in Coaching Without Turning it into a Checklist - Called 2 Coach - Intro Ep.2

Winning is not the real battle. The real question is whether you can coach with God first, serve your players well, and refuse to let the scoreboard become your identity. Paul and Charlie get brutally honest about what it looks like to lead as a Christian coach when performance pressure, parents, school leaders, and your own competitive drive are all pulling at you at once. If you have ever felt torn between pursuing wins and staying faithful, this conversation gives you the framework to think about both without turning faith into a checklist. You'll hear why legalistic “do more for God” coaching falls apart, why your own walk with Christ has to come first before trying to pour into athletes, and how the right heart changes everything from prayer and Bible studies to discipline, mentoring, and the way you handle pressure. The guys also break down what it means to be on Team Jesus, why you cannot compare your calling to another coach's, and why your family may be your first mission field. They also get real about failure. Charlie and Paul share painful moments when they lost their cool with players, what that conviction felt like afterward, and why repentance and forgiveness are not optional if you want to model Christ in a locker room. From there, the conversation opens up into the biggest mistakes, victories, and surprises they've seen in coaching, including kids who came back years later still chasing Jesus. If you coach, lead, mentor, or just want to know how faith actually shows up under pressure, this episode is for you. It's a direct, challenging, and encouraging reminder that the goal is not just to win games—it’s to make disciples, love people well, and let everything flow from putting God first. Support the show

The Hidden Cost of Winning When Discipleship Comes First - Called 2 Coach - Intro Ep.1

The pressure to win can take over fast—but what if your real job as a coach is bigger than the scoreboard? Charlie Goss and Paul Regan get honest about the tension every competitive coach feels: chasing success without losing sight of discipleship, character, and the eternal impact you can have on athletes. The Called 2 Coach co-hosts unpack the question behind the whole series: when winning starts competing with making disciples, what actually comes first? They get into the realities of coaching under pressure, the influence coaches have on young men and women, and why a coach’s “why” has to be rooted in something stronger than stats, trophies, or a state title. You’ll discover: Why winning matters, but can never become the end goal How coaches can lead with servant leadership instead of ego What discipleship can look like in everyday practice, games, and conversations Why consistency, preparation, and vulnerability matter more than performative intensity How a coach’s faith should shape the way they respond to success, failure, and pressure Charlie and Paul also share powerful real-life examples of serving their players in a practical way, and the conversation turns deeply personal when they reflect on what they hope athletes remember 20 years from now. If you coach, teach, parent, lead, or feel the weight of performing well while trying to live your faith out loud, this episode hits right where you are. This is the kind of conversation that forces you to ask hard questions about your purpose, your priorities, and the legacy you’re actually building. Perfect for coaches who want to win without losing their calling, and for anyone trying to stay faithful while living under pressure. Support the show
