Ep 6 - Same Fact Different Fight

It’s 9:40 on a Thursday night. There are dishes in the sink. Four minutes later, nobody’s talking about dishes anymore. Twenty minutes later, she’s in the bedroom, you’re on the couch, and you’re both completely sure the other one is the problem. A camera in that kitchen would’ve recorded a sink with some dishes in it. That’s it. Everything else came from somewhere else. Every situation has two layers: the fact and the story. The fact is what a camera could record. The story is everything your mind adds on top. Most people fight the story, not the fact, and never realize it. If you only take one tool from this show and use it at home, make it this one. We cover: The “camera or commentary” test to train your ear for the differenceWhy two people can stand at the same sink and fight two completely different argumentsWhere your stories come from: the house you grew up in, past relationships, and a work instinct that serves you well at the office and backfires at homeFour signs you’re in a story: always/never, motives, forecasts, and a reaction bigger than the momentA three-part way to bring up something hard: state the fact, own your story, invite theirsThis isn’t about rolling over or pretending things don’t bother you. It’s about fighting the right thing. Dishes are a five-minute problem. “Nothing I do is ever enough” is not. Your challenge this week: think of the last argument at home that felt bigger than it should’ve. Draw a line down a sheet of paper. On the left, write only what a camera would show. On the right, write everything you made it mean. Then take a guess at what story the other person was telling. If there’s a man in your life who’d get something out of the camera test, send this to him. Every man has a sink full of dishes somewhere. Ep 5 - The Watcher

You’re on a call that should’ve ended twenty-five minutes ago. Your daughter walks in, excited, holding a piece of paper. The words are already loaded: “Not now. Can’t you see I’m on a call?” And then, for the first time, you notice. Half a second before they leave your mouth. That half second is the whole skill. You’re not your thoughts. You’re the one who notices them. In this episode I break down The Watcher, a tool from session two of the Mental Fitness Framework and the one that makes every other tool usable in real time. We cover: What it looks like to live inside your thoughts instead of watching them (and why the coach in the booth sees what the players on the field can’t)Why you already do this at work under pressure, and how to start doing it at homeThe four steps: identify, avoid judgment, choose on purpose, and practiceThe three stages of getting better at it: catching it after, during, and beforeA simple front-door practice to decide which version of you walks in at nightThis isn’t about thinking positive or burying what you feel. It’s about seeing the thought clearly enough to decide whether you’re going to act on it. Your challenge this week: three times a day, take five seconds and ask, “What am I thinking right now?” And every time you get home, ask one more: “What am I walking in with?” If you know a man who’s sharp, capable, and still catches himself snapping at the people he loves most, send this to him. He’s probably closer than he thinks. Book a free discovery call: calendly.com/micah-murdockcoaching/30minMore at murdockcoaching.com

Ep 4 - Why We Don't Ask for Help

“I’m fine.” Two words that have cost men more than almost any others. Six states. Twenty-two years in one career, rebuilt more times than I can count. A health fight that’s lasted over a decade. A twenty-six-year marriage that ended. And the number of people I really talked to about any of it while it was happening? Almost none. This one’s different. No tool list, no framework breakdown. Just my story, told straight, and why I think a lot of capable men will recognize themselves in it. I share: How being great at starting over made me skilled at skipping the part where you actually feel what’s happeningWhy I handled a serious diagnosis like a project, and what that kept me from sayingMy part in a marriage that ended, and what it means to bring home your best effort but not all of yourselfThe quiet moment that changed things, and the three shifts that followedThe difference between being steady and being shut downSome problems don’t respond to more effort. You can’t out-perform something that was never a performance problem. And home is usually where that shows up first. Your challenge this week: think of one thing you’re carrying that you haven’t told anyone. Write it down in one sentence. Just get it outside your own head. If there’s a man in your life who always says he’s fine, send this to him. Not because he’s falling apart. Because he’s probably carrying something, and this might help him share it with someone he loves. Book a free discovery call: calendly.com/micah-murdockcoaching/30minMore at murdockcoaching.com

Ep 1 - Why You Keep Losing It

You're the steady one. Calm in the board meeting, patient with the client who hasn't earned it, the guy who handles the crisis while everyone else panics. So why does your son asking for help with his homework get a sharper answer than anyone at work has ever heard from you? In this first episode of Peace and Success at Home, I break down what's going on in those two-second moments at home: the clipped reply, the sigh that says too much, the "I'm fine" that isn't. Nothing happens instantly. There's always a gap between what happens and how you respond. It's just fast enough to feel invisible. Once you can see that gap, you can widen it, and that's where you get to choose who shows up. In this episode: Why the trigger is rarely about what's in front of you, and how old stories get pokedWhat your body and brain do in that split second (fast brain vs. slow brain), and why it shows up at home more than at workThree tools you can start using this week to widen the gapHow to make it right when you miss, and why your kids learn more from that than from you being perfectA question to take into your week: What's the most recent moment at home where you reacted bigger than the situation called for, and what story was running the show? Want to go deeper? This episode previews The Watcher, one of the tools I use with clients 1:1 in the Mental Fitness Framework. Ep 0 - Podcast Trailer

You know how to win. You've built something real at work. People count on you, and when there's a problem, you're the guy who handles it. Then you pull into the driveway, and the skills that work everywhere else don't always make it through the front door. That's not a character flaw. Think about how much time goes into training you for your career: school, continuing education, books, experts, podcasts. Now think about how much training you've had for the job that matters most. For most of us, close to none. So we figure it out on the fly. You're probably better at it than you give yourself credit for, but like everywhere else in your life, you want to get better. That's what this show is for. I'm Micah Murdock, a mental fitness coach and the author of the Mental Fitness Framework. I've spent 22 years in education building ways for people to learn hard things and actually use them. I'm also a husband and dad in a blended family with lots of kids running around, so I've lived the chaos of soccer practice, recitals, homework, and dinner all landing on the same night. This isn't therapy, and it isn't relationship advice. It's hands-on coaching. Every episode gives you tools you can use this week, like how to: Catch yourself before a reaction takes overStay in a hard conversation without getting defensive or shutting downKeep your footing when everything around you feels out of controlShow up for your family as the man you know you can be Because when things are solid at home, you see peace and success grow everywhere else.
