How can Alcoholics Anonymous groups operate independently while remaining united as one worldwide Fellowship? Clif G. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, participates in “Group Autonomy” at the 2025 Alcoholics Anonymous International Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia. Group autonomy is a foundational principle of Alcoholics Anonymous, closely connected to the Fourth Tradition and the responsibility of individual groups to the Fellowship as a whole. Unlike organizations governed through a centralized authority, Alcoholics Anonymous gives individual groups considerable freedom to manage their own affairs. Groups determine their meeting formats, select trusted servants, make decisions through their group conscience, and develop their own approaches to carrying the message. But that freedom comes with responsibility. The Fourth Tradition recognizes that decisions affecting other groups or Alcoholics Anonymous as a whole require consideration beyond the interests of any single group. This balance between independence, responsibility, and unity has helped guide A.A. throughout its history. Clif G. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is an experienced A.A. speaker whose recorded presentations include appearances at conventions, roundups, and recovery workshops throughout the United States. His archived speaking history includes the Georgia State Convention, Sobermania, Marietta Spring Roundup, and Allatoona Roundup. His earlier presentations have explored the Twelve Steps, relationships, spiritual growth, and the importance of service in recovery. The principle of group autonomy emerged from the experiences of A.A.'s earliest groups. As Alcoholics Anonymous expanded, members discovered that groups needed the freedom to learn from their own successes and mistakes. At the same time, the Fellowship recognized the importance of protecting its unity and common purpose. Tradition Four reflects that balance. For members involved in General Service, group leadership, or the study of the Twelve Traditions, understanding group autonomy provides important insight into how Alcoholics Anonymous continues to function. The 2025 Alcoholics Anonymous International Convention was held July 3–6, 2025, in Vancouver, British Columbia, celebrating 90 years of Alcoholics Anonymous. Under the theme “90 Years – Language of the Heart,” members gathered from around the world for speaker meetings, workshops, fellowship, and the celebration of recovery. “Group Autonomy” was featured in the official convention program on July 5, 2025.
