We Love It Really

AliceNeil

We love films. We also cannot leave them the f**k alone. We Love It Really is the movie roast podcast from two hopeless film nerds who rewatch the films they genuinely love — then proceed to interrogate every plot hole, dodgy line, questionable decision, gloriously shit effect and tiny ridiculous detail nobody asked us to notice. Horror. Musicals. Action. Family classics. Cult favourites. Oscar winners. Absolute cinematic bollocks. Nothing is safe. This isn’t a bad-movie podcast. We’re not here to tell you your favourite film is shit. We’re here to ask the important questions, overanalyse things to a frankly unnecessary degree, go wildly off topic, swear quite a lot — and somehow love the film even more by the end. We roast because we love. Really. 🎬 Two nerds. One movie. Far too many notes. 🔥 New roast, same unhealthy level of detail. 📧 roast@weloveitreallypodcast.com Hosted on Acast. Never Trust a Bedtime

Going to bed has never seemed like such a catastrophically bad idea. This week, Alice and Neil are heading back to the 1980s for a horror classic involving teenagers, terrible sleep hygiene, spectacular practical effects and a collection of adults making decisions that become more questionable by the minute. There are nightmares. There are boiler rooms. There is an astonishing amount of coffee. There’s a bath we’ll never feel entirely comfortable getting into again, a sleep clinic with rather more excitement than advertised, and a bedroom incident that raises some genuinely extraordinary questions about both gravity and plumbing. We’re talking dream logic, ridiculous parenting, magnificent practical effects, deeply dubious decision-making and the important question of exactly how much shit one teenage girl is expected to sort out while every responsible adult around her remains spectacularly unhelpful. And because this is We Love It Really, we’ll also be obsessing over all the tiny details, strange choices, plot logic and gloriously unnecessary bits that make us love the film in the first place. We roast because we love. Really. Our roast this week is: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Wes Craven’s original supernatural slasher horror classic stars Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley and Johnny Depp, and introduced Freddy Krueger and Elm Street to horror cinema. If you’re looking for an A Nightmare on Elm Street podcast, Freddy Krueger podcast, horror movie podcast, 1980s horror podcast, classic horror podcast, funny movie review, comedy film podcast, movie roast, film podcast, movie rewatch, horror movie rewatch, cult movie podcast, slasher movie podcast, film analysis, movie commentary, practical effects, 80s movie nostalgia or simply two movie nerds becoming far too invested in fictional dream mechanics — you’re in the right place. CONTENT WARNING: Strong language, adult humour, frank sexual conversation, violence, gore, child-murder themes and the distinct possibility that this episode will make bedtime considerably less appealing. We f*****g love movies. We also have notes. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Suits, Slime & Seriously Questionable Recruitment

There are aliens among us. Apparently the solution is a secret government department, matching suits and absolutely no meaningful oversight whatsoever. This week, Alice and Neil are heading back to the glorious world of 1990s sci-fi comedy: a time when Will Smith could save the planet before lunch, Tommy Lee Jones could communicate an entire emotional range by moving one eyebrow, and an intergalactic immigration crisis could apparently be solved with sunglasses, paperwork and a suspiciously shiny pen. We genuinely love this film. Really. Which is precisely why we have questions. Questions like: who approved this recruitment process? Why is nobody remotely concerned about workplace health and safety? How many innocent civilians have had their memories wiped because somebody couldn't be bothered explaining themselves? And at what point does dealing with giant extraterrestrial insects stop being a government job and start requiring considerably better overtime? Expect aliens, conspiracy theories, questionable employment practices, enormous cockroaches, tiny guns, exploding heads, 90s nostalgia and two people applying a completely unreasonable amount of adult logic to a film that absolutely did not ask for it. If you love funny movie podcasts, film reviews, movie roasts, retro movies, 90s movies, sci-fi comedy, cult classics, nostalgic cinema, Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones or simply listening to two friends lovingly dismantle films they adore, welcome in. We love it. Really. That's why we're roasting it. CONTENT WARNING: Strong language, spoilers and a frankly unnecessary amount of sexual conversation. This is very much an adults-only trip to the cinema. Please do not listen with your nan unless your nan is considerably more broad-minded than ours. OUR ROAST THIS WEEK IS: MEN IN BLACK (1997) Starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. A 1990s sci-fi comedy classic involving aliens, secret agents, the neuralyzer and one extremely angry bug. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Muscles, Mud & One Very Bad Hunting Trip

A group of enormously muscular men are dropped into a jungle carrying enough weaponry to overthrow a small nation. What could possibly go wrong? Quite a lot, as it turns out. This week Alice and Neil are heading deep into the glorious, sweaty, testosterone-soaked world of 1980s action cinema — where shirts are optional, biceps are apparently a form of military equipment and absolutely nobody thinks that firing several thousand rounds of ammunition blindly into a forest might be considered excessive. At the centre of it all is Arnold Schwarzenegger, surrounded by one of the most magnificently macho ensembles ever assembled: Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Sonny Landham, Richard Chaves and Shane Black. They're highly trained, heavily armed and extremely confident. Unfortunately, something in the trees has other ideas. We genuinely love this film. But once you start applying adult logic to it, the questions arrive alarmingly quickly. How much ammunition did these men actually carry? Is arm wrestling an acceptable form of greeting? Why does everyone appear to have been recruited according to upper-arm circumference? At what point during a covert military operation does somebody say, “You know what this situation needs? A minigun”? And perhaps most importantly: if you're being hunted through a jungle by an invisible extraterrestrial with thermal vision and advanced alien weaponry, is covering yourself in mud genuinely the best plan humanity can come up with? Expect enormous muscles, bigger guns, questionable military tactics, spectacular one-liners, alien technology, camouflage, explosions, 1980s machismo and Alice and Neil spending an unreasonable amount of time discussing things John McTiernan almost certainly never intended anyone to examine this closely. If you love funny movie podcasts, film reviews, movie roasts, Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, 80s action movies, classic sci-fi, sci-fi horror, alien movies, action films, cult classics, retro cinema, movie nostalgia or simply listening to two friends lovingly tear apart films they genuinely adore — you've found your people. Because this isn't about finding bad films. We love it. Really. That's why we're roasting it. CONTENT WARNING: Strong language, spoilers, violence and a frankly impressive amount of sexual conversation. This podcast is for adults. If you're listening with your nan, that's between you, your nan and whatever conversations you're prepared to have afterwards. OUR ROAST THIS WEEK IS: PREDATOR (1987) Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura and Kevin Peter Hall, and directed by John McTiernan. The action/sci-fi/horror classic that took an elite commando unit, dropped them into the jungle and introduced them to something considerably better at hunting than they were. Hosted on Acast. Bangarang and Other Poor Life Choices

What happens when Peter Pan grows up, becomes a corporate lawyer, forgets how to fly and somehow needs an entire gang of feral children to remind him how to have fun? This week, We Love It Really heads back to Neverland for a loving roast of one of the biggest fantasy films of the 1990s — complete with pirates, food fights, questionable parenting, wildly impractical child supervision and Dustin Hoffman having the absolute time of his life under an extraordinary amount of prosthetic nose. We get into Robin Williams as the world’s most stressed-out Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman’s gloriously theatrical Captain Hook, Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell, Bob Hoskins as Smee, Rufio, the Lost Boys, the imaginary feast, the crocodile clock, the baseball, the mermaids, the pirate ship and the frankly astonishing amount of trauma everyone appears to accept as a perfectly normal family holiday. There’s Steven Spielberg magic everywhere, John Williams doing emotional damage with the score, peak 1991 nostalgia and enough Neverland logic to keep two overthinking film fans occupied for far longer than is medically advisable. If you love 90s movies, Robin Williams films, Steven Spielberg, Peter Pan, fantasy adventure movies, nostalgic cinema, comedy film reviews, movie podcasts, film podcasts or simply listening to two people lovingly dismantle a film they genuinely adore, you’ve come to the right place. FAIR WARNING: This is an adults-only movie roast. Expect strong language, sexual chat, inappropriate observations, spoilers and the occasional conversational detour that absolutely would not survive a Disney HR meeting. We love these films. Really. That’s why nothing is safe. Our roast this week is… HOOK (1991). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
