Utah officials faced criticism over bird flu outbreak at mink farm

A ProPublica investigation reveals that bird flu has been spreading on a mink farm in Utah since August, with minimal efforts by public authorities to control the situation. According to the report, health officials from the state did not screen workers for symptoms or conduct contact tracing, even though they had regular exposure to infected animals and faced potential risks like bites and scratches. The agriculture department reportedly resisted testing due to farmers' frustration with the process. Amanda Price, Utah’s state veterinarian, described the outbreak as devastating, highlighting its impact on the farmer's way of life. The Guardian writer George Monbiot claims that mink farms may enable bird and human flu viruses to swap genetic information, warning that a strain combining higher deadliness with greater transmissibility could present a major threat. He points out that transmission of bird flu from person to person has remained very limited up to now. Monbiot also criticizes authorities for not issuing an emergency declaration, stating they were concerned it might draw attention from animal rights organizations. He suggests that livestock farming in general can aid the emergence and spread of new diseases. The piece also references remarks by U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who proposed that chicken farmers allow bird flu to circulate among their birds—an approach Monbiot calls risky. https://wallstreetturkish.com/en/the-next-global-pandemic-could-be-brewing-on-a-mink-farm-in-utah-and-little-is-being-done-to-stop-it-george-monbiot-31648

Australia tells court under-16 social media ban modestly limits political speech

The Australian government says its restriction on social media accounts for people under 16 imposes an “indirect and modest” burden on their ability to communicate about politics. In court, government barrister Stephen Lloyd SC argued that the law targets platform features such as endless scrolling, likes, comments, personalised recommendations and push notifications, which he said pose a credible risk of harm to under-16s. Reddit is challenging the ban, arguing that it restricts the implied freedom of political communication and was rushed through in 2024 as overly broad legislation. The government says rules for platforms were part of the law from the outset and the court should assess how it operates now. The ban took effect in December 2025. More than five million accounts that platforms understand belong to people under 16 have since been suspended or deactivated across ten platforms, including Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Lloyd said children face no penalty for holding an account and can still access services outside the ban, as well as Reddit and YouTube without an account. He also said a hypothetical Reddit Kids service without the targeted features might allow under-16s to communicate about politics, but Reddit would still need to assess users’ ages. Apart from YouTube Kids, no platform has received an exemption for a version specifically designed for teens. The hearing is due to conclude Wednesday afternoon. https://wallstreetturkish.com/en/australian-government-concedes-social-media-ban-places-burden-on-freedom-of-political-communication-for-teens-31602

Binance completes reserves proof, replenishes 95% of hacked assets

Binance has announced the completion of a new zero-knowledge proof-of-reserves snapshot. The exchange stated that users with holdings in Bitcoin, Ether, Tether, BNB, Solana, USD Coin, XRP, USD1, RLUSD and Zcash can independently confirm that their balances are backed at a one-to-one ratio. Binance also said it has replenished roughly 95 percent of the assets affected by the hack using its own funds. The remaining five percent consists of less-liquid tokens that the company is still working to acquire. The platform plans another reserves snapshot and expects to begin gradually restoring withdrawals for more networks and assets. Co-CEO Richard Teng said there was still work to do and that Binance would continue to communicate its progress. Binance co-founder and co-CEO Yi He said generating the full zero-knowledge proof is expected to take approximately 40 to 50 hours after the snapshot is completed. Onchain investigators have said North Korean hackers exploited Binance’s internal systems and wallet-signing mechanisms to move more than six billion dollars across multiple blockchains. SomaXBT reported that North Korean hackers laundered roughly 242 million dollars of the stolen funds on Tron. DeFiLlama data shows that Binance’s 24-hour net outflows fell to about 3.29 billion dollars, more than 50 percent below an earlier peak of around seven billion dollars. The tracker estimates that the exchange holds approximately 127.78 billion dollars in assets across linked onchain wallets. https://wallstreetturkish.com/en/binance-completes-latest-proof-of-reserves-as-it-works-to-restore-assets-withdrawals-after-record-hack-31590

Charleston exhibition examines mental health in the Bloomsbury group

An upcoming display at Charleston in Lewes explores the topic of mental health among members of the Bloomsbury group, questioning the long-standing image of Virginia Woolf as a solitary, tormented artistic figure. According to curator Hazel McMichael, the exhibition investigates the influence of psychiatry and psychoanalysis on the group’s everyday existence and creative output. It also seeks to reclaim the term “mad” as something to be proud of and tied to political identity, while recognizing the sad outcome of Woolf’s death by her own hand in 1941. The show contrasts Woolf's largely private treatment within her home with that of artist Helen Coombe, whose work came to an end following her confinement in a mental institution, where she remained for the final 26 years of her life. The exhibition also highlights individuals whose narratives are rarely heard, such as Mary Elizabeth Wilson, a domestic worker whose profound psychological suffering was described by Vanessa Bell. Another figure is Laura Stephen, the half-sister of Virginia Woolf, who entered an asylum at age 22. Modern pieces from the Mad Heritage Collective and artist Louisa Fairclough offer viewpoints informed by personal experience with mental health challenges and psychotic episodes. The display explores links to eugenics, including John Maynard Keynes’s position as vice-president of the Eugenics Society and Woolf’s reflections on those with intellectual disabilities. “Mad Bloomsbury” runs at Charleston from November 4 to April 11. https://wallstreetturkish.com/en/the-output-of-a-lunatic-asylum-what-the-bloomsbury-group-can-tell-us-about-mental-health-31403
