Expat-ish: Life Between Cultures

Janice Diaz and Trice Turner

Moving abroad changes your address. What happens to everything else? Expat-ish is a podcast about living abroad, identity, and belonging, especially for women discovering that reinvention rarely follows the itinerary. Producer and host Janice Diaz in Italy and co-host Trice Turner in the UK share honest conversations about the lives we build between cultures. From friendships and marriage to language mishaps, food traditions, and being American abroad, we explore what changes, what follows us, and what starts to feel like home. Expect humor, cultural friction, occasional disagreements, and stories that go beyond the honeymoon phase of expat life. Whether you’re planning a move, years into life overseas, or finding that “Where are you from?” needs a longer answer, pull up a seat. A podcast from The Otherhood. The Move Won’t Save You

A new address does not automatically give you a new life. Janice changed countries and still found herself saying yes at work when her whole body meant no. For Trice, moving to the UK came after a pandemic had already interrupted the work, travel, and commitments that kept her from sitting still. The two experiences make for a more interesting question than whether moving abroad “worked”: what did distance actually change? Janice Diaz and Trice Turner talk about the relief of being somewhere nobody knows your history, the habits that travel just fine without a passport, and the moment you recognize your part in a familiar pattern. They close with a small exercise: name three things the move improved, one pattern you brought along, and one response you could change where you are. In this episode: • What physical distance makes possible • Overworking and people-pleasing in a new country • Trice’s experience of starting over in the UK • Janice’s move to Cyprus and the patterns she began to recognize Produced and hosted by Janice Diaz, with co-host Trice Turner. Why Would You Leave?

Moving abroad can mean explaining your decision to everyone who stayed. When Trice moved to the UK, her mother had her own theory about why. Janice and Trice talk about what happens when the people who love you start treating your decision as theirs to explain. Janice Diaz and Trice Turner talk about the moment concern starts to sound like judgment, especially when a woman steps out of the role everyone relies on her to play. Trice shares five ways to answer questions without turning a conversation into a defense of your whole life. And Janice names the quieter grief: people can love you and still be looking for a version of you who no longer lives there. In this episode: • Why announcing a move can feel like asking permission • The difference between concern, guilt, and judgment • Five ways to respond without overexplaining • Missing home without wanting to go back Produced and hosted by Janice Diaz, with co-host Trice Turner.
