Why Don't Churches Talk About Hell Anymore?

What happens the moment after we take our last breath? It is a question most of us quietly avoid, yet it may be the most important one we ever wrestle with. This conversation pulls back the curtain on a topic the modern church has largely set aside: the reality of hell. Drawing from the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16, we are confronted with a sobering picture of eternity that is immediate, permanent, and deeply personal. The rich man does not wake up confused. He knows exactly where he is and why. His memory, his identity, and even his love for his brothers remain fully intact, yet he is utterly alone, separated from God, and unable to change a single thing. What strikes us most is not just the heat or the darkness, but the isolation and the unrelenting awareness of what could have been different. This is not a scare tactic. It is a wake-up call rooted in love, the same love that compels us to warn someone when the bridge is out ahead. If we truly believe these things, how could we stay silent?
