Welcome to PhiloLens, where I will take you on to a journey of examination. No, not like exams in schools, but to turn your life into a world of ideas and philosophy. As Socrates once said, "an unexamined life is not worth living." This is what our channel is built for. How can drama, music, and fitness give meanings to your life? How can practicing and participating in these be good on your soul and self? Nonetheless, what implications and impacts do they have on our society? Why bother? These are the questions I decide to answer.

Opera Makes You a Better Person

Picture a young woman dying in a freezing Paris attic, and a theatre full of strangers quietly sobbing. When the lights come up, everyone agrees it was beautiful. Why do we find this so moving, and could it actually be good for us? In this episode, we explore three emotions that opera stirs in us and how they might work together as a chain, step by step, to make us better people. Along the way, we will also be mentioning Puccini's La Bohème as an example. We start with awe, through Edmund Burke’s “delightful horror” and Immanuel Kant’s idea that the sublime reveals our moral capacity. Next comes sympathy, through David Hume’s view that morality is felt, and Adam Smith’s impartial spectator, the conscience we build in our own heads. We end with catharsis, and Aristotle’s argument that tragedy leaves us calmer, clearer, and better tuned. Do these ideas really add up to a moral education, or is it just a good cry? Listen and decide for yourself.
