The Missing Energy of a Star Being Eaten

When a black hole tears a star apart, the flare should blaze with a hundred times more energy than telescopes see. Caldwell follows the missing energy of tidal disruption events through extreme ultraviolet light, jets pointed away from Earth, and the infrared dust echoes that finally accounted for it. What was observed? Tidal disruption flares whose visible and ultraviolet energy is ten to a hundred times less than theory predicts. How was it measured? Optical and ultraviolet surveys, and mid-infrared dust echoes. Why is it important? It decides how black holes feed and how much energy they release. What explanations are supported? Most of the energy escapes in the extreme ultraviolet, a band we cannot observe directly, with dust echoes as key evidence. What remains unknown? How much energy goes to each hiding place, and whether one explanation covers all events. Sources: Lu and Kumar 2018; Masterson et al. 2024, ApJ 961, 211; Gezari 2021, ARA&A.

    The Hexagon on Saturn

At Saturn's north pole a storm draws a perfect six-sided figure thirty thousand kilometres across, and it has held its shape for decades. Caldwell follows the hexagon from Voyager's discovery through Cassini's thirteen-year watch, the Rossby wave explanation, the south pole that has no hexagon, and the colour change from blue to gold. What was observed? A six-sided jet stream thirty thousand kilometres across at Saturn's north pole, rotating with the planet. How was it measured? Voyager flybys in 1980-81 and Cassini imaging from 2004 to 2017. Why is it important? It is the only geometric storm in the solar system, and its stability is unexplained. What explanations are supported? A standing Rossby wave in the jet stream, confirmed by laboratory tank experiments. What remains unknown? Why six sides, why it is so stable, how deep it goes, and what started it. Sources: Godfrey 1988; Allison et al. 1990; Sanchez-Lavega et al. 2014; NASA Cassini imaging 2012-2017.

The Neutron That Cannot Agree With Itself

A free neutron lives about fifteen minutes, but two ways of measuring it disagree by nine seconds, a gap far too large to ignore. Caldwell follows the beam and the bottle through hidden systematics to the dark decay hypothesis, the idea that one percent of neutrons vanish into particles no detector can see. What was observed? Beam experiments measure 887.7 seconds; bottle experiments measure 877.75 seconds. How was it measured? Counting decay protons in a cold neutron beam at NIST, and counting surviving ultracold neutrons in a magnetic bottle at Los Alamos. Why is it important? The neutron lifetime sets Big Bang nucleosynthesis, solar fusion rates, and tests the Standard Model. What explanations are supported? A hidden systematic in one method, or a dark decay channel; the simplest dark decays are ruled out. What remains unknown? Which answer is right, and whether the nine seconds are a mistake or a message. Sources: Yue et al. (BL1); Gonzalez et al. 2021 (UCNtau); Fornal and Grinstein 2018; PDG 2024.

The Galaxy With No Dark Matter

Every galaxy is held together by dark matter, except two. Caldwell follows the Dragonfly telescope's ghost galaxies DF2 and DF4, whose stars move far too slowly for a normal dark halo, through the distance debate and the bullet-dwarf collision theory, to the quiet proof that dark matter is a real substance that can be separated from stars. What was observed? Two ultra-diffuse galaxies whose globular clusters move far too slowly for a normal dark matter halo. How was it measured? Keck spectroscopy of globular cluster velocities; Hubble distance confirmation over 42 orbits. Why is it important? It shows dark matter is a substance that can be separated from ordinary matter, not a trick of gravity. What explanations are supported? The galaxies are severely dark-matter deficient; tidal stripping, a bullet-dwarf collision and jet-triggered formation compete. What remains unknown? How these galaxies formed, and how common they are. Sources: van Dokkum et al. 2018, Nature 555, 629; Danieli et al. 2019; van Dokkum et al. 2019.

The Black Holes That Grew Up Too Fast

Less than seven hundred million years after the Big Bang, black holes already weighed more than a billion Suns. Caldwell follows the record quasar J0313-1806 through the arithmetic of the Eddington limit to the only seed heavy enough to explain it: a cloud of cold hydrogen collapsing directly into a black hole, with no star ever forming. What was observed? Quasars with billion-solar-mass black holes less than a billion years after the Big Bang. How was it measured? Quasar luminosities and spectra, and the Eddington growth limit. Why is it important? It means the standard story of small seeds growing slowly is incomplete. What explanations are supported? The seed must have weighed at least ten thousand Suns; direct collapse is the leading idea, unobserved. What remains unknown? How the first heavy seeds actually formed. The Ocean World That Might Be Real

Forty-nine light-years away, the super-Earth LHS 1140 b may hold an ocean worth a tenth of its entire mass. Caldwell follows the evidence from the planet's impossible lightness to the James Webb spectra that ruled out a hydrogen blanket, and asks what it would take to prove an ocean exists on a world no one will ever touch. What was observed? A planet too light for solid rock, with a spectrum that rules out a thick hydrogen atmosphere. How was it measured? Precise mass and radius measurements, and JWST transit spectroscopy. Why is it important? It may be the best current chance to confirm liquid water on another world. What explanations are supported? The planet is not a mini-Neptune; a nitrogen-rich atmosphere and a bull's-eye ocean fit the data. What remains unknown? Whether the ocean and the nitrogen are real. The Signal From Proxima That Was Not What It Seemed

In 2019 the Parkes telescope caught a narrow radio signal from Proxima Centauri that passed every test for an alien transmitter. Caldwell follows BLC1 from its discovery by Shane Smith through Sofia Sheikh's year-long investigation to the verdict: human interference wearing an alien disguise, and the verification framework it left behind. What was observed? A narrowband radio signal near 982 megahertz, drifting in frequency, lasting about five hours, from the direction of Proxima Centauri. How was it measured? The Parkes Murriyang radio telescope, as part of the Breakthrough Listen survey. Why is it important? It was the first Breakthrough Listen candidate to pass every initial screening test. What explanations are supported? The signal is an electronically drifting intermodulation product of local, time-varying interferers — human technology, confirmed by dozens of look-alike signals at harmonically related frequencies. What remains unknown? Which exact piece of equipment produced it. Sources: Sheikh et al. 2021, Nature Astronomy; Smith et al. 2021, Nature Astronomy; Breakthrough Listen.

The Universe Has a Favourite Direction

The oldest light in the universe carries a pattern that should not exist: the largest ripples in the cosmic microwave background line up with each other, and with the plane of Earth's orbit. Caldwell traces the Axis of Evil from WMAP to Planck, through coincidence, dust and new physics, to ask what it would mean if the universe has a preferred direction. What was observed? The quadrupole and octupole patterns of the cosmic microwave background align with each other and with the ecliptic plane. How was it measured? All-sky microwave maps from NASA's WMAP satellite and ESA's Planck satellite. Why is it important? It challenges the cosmological principle, the assumption that the universe has no preferred direction. What explanations are supported? The alignment is real in the data from two independent satellites; chance, foreground contamination, and new physics all remain live. What remains unknown? Whether the axis is a statistical fluke, a local distortion, or a real property of the universe itself.
