    Dave Frodsham continues our Foundations series by looking at why we need to be people of the Word and of the Spirit and what encouragement there is in the Bible. Key scriptures: John 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. ​Matthew 4:4. But he answered, “It is written,​ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 22:29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. Psalm 63:1-8: O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.​ So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.​ So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.     Graham Webb: Four foundations in one verse

    In this message, Graham explores the rich truths found in 2 Corinthians 13:14, showing how one verse contains four foundational Christian doctrines: the Trinity, grace, the Father’s love (which he connects with God’s sovereign election), and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Graham begins by explaining the doctrine of the Trinity—one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Although the word “Trinity” isn’t found in the Bible, he shows how Scripture consistently reveals God’s triune nature, pointing to passages such as Jesus’ baptism, the Great Commission, and Genesis 1. He explains that Jesus is fully God and has existed eternally with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He then focuses on the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, emphasising that salvation and the Christian life are entirely based on God’s undeserved favour rather than human effort. Reflecting on his own experience, Graham shares how he spent years trying to earn God’s approval through religious performance before discovering the freedom of living under God’s grace instead of legalism. Next, Graham explores the love of God the Father, teaching that God’s love is rooted in His sovereign choice and eternal purpose. He discusses the biblical doctrines of election and predestination, explaining how he initially struggled with these teachings before becoming convinced that salvation belongs to God from beginning to end. He encourages believers to find deep assurance in knowing that nothing can separate them from God’s love and that He faithfully keeps those He has called. Finally, Graham highlights the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, reminding Christians that the Spirit is not simply a doctrine but a personal companion who fills, strengthens, and empowers believers daily. He encourages continual dependence on the Holy Spirit, inviting God’s presence afresh and cultivating a close friendship with Him. Throughout the message, Graham combines biblical teaching with personal testimony, encouraging Christians to rest in God’s grace, trust His sovereign love, and live daily in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Pursue, Don’t Just Be Open: Rick challenges us to move from simply being “open” to the gifts to actively and eagerly desiring them, just as scripture commands. The Purpose is Edification: Whether it’s words of wisdom, prophecy, hospitality, or tongues, the primary goal is always to strengthen, comfort, and build up others in love. Testing Prophecy: Because we “know in part,” Rick emphasises the importance of sharing and receiving prophetic words with humility, always weighing them against scripture. A Word of Encouragement: Toward the end of the message, Rick shares a specific word for anyone who has been held back by fear from past experiences with the occult or secular spirituality: God has broken that fear. What Christ Has Done (Ephesians 2:13-16): Through His blood on the cross, Jesus paid our debt and brought us near to God. He fulfilled the law and tore down the “walls of hostility” that divide people, establishing true peace. What We Are Now (Ephesians 2:19): When we trust in Jesus, our old life is history. We are no longer strangers or outsiders; we are citizens of God’s kingdom, built together as a diverse, unified church.
