616 - Taste the Pain with special guest Michael Beinhorn - a look into the production of some absolutely massive albums

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 616 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Taste the Pain with special guest Michael Beinhorn - a look into the production of some absolutely massive albums  The guys are joined by a true legend of the production world, Michael Beinhorn, who has produced some of the greatest records of all time. We are talking Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Korn, and we are talking Herbie Hancock too! We start at the beginning and find out what the third most used sound in recorded music history is... and Michael came up with it. Brian and Richard can't resist fanboying a little and so the conversation moved on to Superunknown by Soundgarden, which was a defining album for all the guys' musical tastes. This is a fascinating look into the stories behind the scenes and Michael's own personal perspective which made him one of the most in-demand record producers of a generation. Michael's philosophy for making records translates into some fantastic advice for nearly everyone... Michael has written a book, Taste the Pain - The Making of The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Mother's Milk, which starts out with a tragedy and gives an incredibly candid view of how the band survived the challenges thrown their way. He gives us some fascinating insights into the band, the recording process, and music production in general. Finally, the guys look at the making of Hole's "Celebrity Skin" with no punches pulled. This is a fascinating and compelling episode, and we would like to say a huge thanks to Michael for his time and his candid storytelling! Electro phases, Seattle Grunge, Black Hole Sun, Chad Smith's Posterior, Kornhole...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! 615 - Random amp joy, the great Kindle swindle, and Telecaster heresy

Blake and Richard are back for Episode 615 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Random amp joy, the great Kindle swindle, and Telecaster heresy Brian is somewhat unexpectedly out of town on business so Blake and Richard take the helm - apologies for the different music and the quality of the hosts. Richard got to play his first real amp when he found the same model he had as a kid in a recording studio. It did not cure his GAS and he stakes a claim to being one of the most professional mediocre guitarists ever.  Despite Brian's absence this week, the AI train rumbles on... Josh Scott from JHS has been testing the limits of AI and the results were a bit baffling so the guys discuss it and some other AI pushbacks and issues they have seen. Meanwhile, Blake gets a lesson in Crusties and reveals a mystery package sent from Martinsville. NUX have released a new modelling solution that caught Richard's eye for a unique feature that he likes. The guys also have a look at the controversy that surrounded a very sad announcement from a young player and the ripples it sent into the gear world. Blake has big Radiohead news. Community Microphones, The Gaslight Anthem, Chumbawamba, Neil Young, Rich and the Daddy cans... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! We are on Patreon now too! 614 - Are two heads better than one? The great stereo amp debate and the magic number of knobs!

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 614 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Are two heads better than one? The great stereo amp debate and the magic number of knobs! Brian opens up with some multilingual greetings while Richard and Blake have some serpentine interactions. The guys talk about a new Strymon fuzz pedal, and Blake tells us about a dealer's event he went to at NAMM where leakage was discussed. Would you pay for a pedal with a subscription element? Brian has plans. Richard digs himself a massive hole accidentally when he talks about a new Marshall product. He also questions the concept of the true stereo amplifier head with the guys, and they discuss various models on the market. Synergy released a new JCM 800 module which impressed Richard, and Brian confesses he has one coming to him. What was your earliest musical memory? The guys trade stories and Brian is dismissive of a British band. Random Speculation, The Sex Pistols, Inappropriate Jazz, Happy Magic Trees, Safety Nuts...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! 613 - Who is the world's smallest pedal builder, and has Blake finally submitted to the dark side?

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 613 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - who is the world's smallest pedal builder, and has Blake finally submitted to the dark side?  We open with a tribute from Brian and some sausage recommendations, and there is a bit of bro-love as we look at the hot topics in the guitar world this week. There was some sad news in the gear world, and it has led Richard into some new GAS for a classic amplifier. Ross Pedals has relaunched - again - and the guys dig into what is going on without any form of expertise but a lot of enthusiasm. The Guitar Geek released a video about what may be the ultimate tremolo system for Brian, and he is audibly excited before the podcast takes a dark turn. Fender has made a branding move with new interfaces which Richard thinks is a home run, so the guys discuss it. Meanwhile Brian has been "Glamping" and breaks down his recent expedition. Guitar Center is looking to build their own guitars and the guys debate what this might mean. Blake has acquired a modeler and Richard is the cosmic donkey. Bri humor, Ibanez, Dog scat, spoons, Logan Paul's UFO disclosure... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! We are on Patreon now too! 612 - Travis Feaster plays the blues, LED fretboards, and there is fuzz on the internet

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 612 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Travis Feaster plays the blues, LED fretboards, and there is fuzz on the internet   Brian goes full Talladega Nights. He's been playing a lot more guitar recently, and that's the most sensible piece of information I have for you. Brian has dipped his toes into a new venture with Travis Feaster and tells us all about it - you may need shades and a hat. Richard makes a grave mistake. Have you ever suffered from uncontrollable venue-based feedback? Richard played in an ancient hall in one of the Shires and is baffled by the electrical issues he faced - he seeks advice. Brian finds a class of vintage guitars that he's interested in. There are two Indiana-adjacent stories that the guys dig into, and at least one of them flabbers Richard's gast. The guys reminisce about the smell of amplifiers and guitar cases, and Brian copyrights the Smelody. Brian has a Freebird story. Richard made a YouTube video and discovered an intriguing new teaching tool.  Licks'n'tricks, Chasing Tyres, Joe Knuckles, JHS Coyote, The Martinsville gUber,  ... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! 611 - Pointy-headed guitars, vintage cabs, and German ambient weirdness.

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 611 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Pointy-headed guitars, vintage cabs, and German ambient weirdness. Someone is at Maximum ET as the guys get misty-eyed about handheld computing devices from the late 1990s. Richard has found a pointy-headed guitar and is trying his very best not to buy it, but the guys aren't having it and are pushing him in the other direction.  Have you ever used more than one expression pedal at once? The guys discuss the ultimate expression setup as a result of a bizarre Canadian math-rock duo, and Richard has terrible French pronunciation issues. Lunchbox amps have become all the rage, and the guys chat about whether they're the best solution for gigging guitarists.  Blake has a new/old gear day and tells us the story. Have you ever considered the ultimate form of the guitar pedal? Richard has been giving this some thought, and Brian shoots him down in flames before inventing the worst Nintendo game ever. Pluribus, Angine de Poitrine, Peavey Stingray, Magnetic Pedalboards, it's all Paul McCartney's fault... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! We are on Patreon now too! 610 - Are gigantic pedalboards back in fashion and what is the cure for a bad band practice?

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 610 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Are gigantic pedalboards back in fashion and what is the cure for a bad band practice? Brian opens up with possibly the most Martinsville story ever and it confuses everyone before Richard attempts to steer the conversation back to music and reveals a sick burn that got him. He then overshares something he really shouldn't and has also nearly bought a Charvel. Have you ever worked at a music store? The guys reminisce about their first jobs and Richard has good news about the state of modern music. Blake had a literal rude awakening when Richard sent a candid photo of a very famous drummer without considering the time zone differences. An icon of the music industry thinks Brian is too sexy for his guitar. Do you listen to AI-generated music? A fraudster has made millions by illegally manipulating streaming services using AI and the guys debate this. Brian has technical issues. Richard makes a case for why the guitar can never be replaced by technology and is infuriated by fake rock star daughter profiles. Backing track confessions, SNL x Wet Leg, K-Cups, Brian's Mandela effects, UFO Disclosure, Amplified Nation... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! We are on Patreon now too! 609 - You can't put handlebars on an amplifier, the world's most expensive guitar, and happy birthday to the Telecaster!

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 609 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - You can't put handlebars on an amplifier, the world's most expensive guitar, and happy birthday to the Telecaster! Blake has returned from his truck driving days and Richard is in an argumentative mood, while Brian is wistful for the days of CB radios and dreams of flying in his own personal drone. Guitar Pedals? Us? Nah... Brian has a new two-wheeled vehicle and is excited to customize it as we wrap up the transport section of the show. Brian is gassing for a new amp, so the guys look at his available choices and he points out that Richard has finally realized his Gilmour-based dreams with the launch of Oliver Effects! He tells us a little bit about his first pedal, the Purple Ohm Fuzz, and the guys talk about the origin story. Richard gives Brian a valuable idea. The Telecaster turns 75 and the big F has released some new Telecasters, including a new Cabronita model that the guys are lusting after. In other news, Fender won a court case in Germany allowing them to effectively trademark the shape of the Stratocaster, and the guys debate this. Also, a very special Strat is now the world's most expensive guitar... Truck nuts, Friedman amps, Daisy Seed, Digital Doohickery, Brian's Powertron... it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!
