    The Periodic Table of Awesome podcast - Clayface

    Clayface Batman has one of the most memorable rogues‘ galleries in comics, but few villains have had quite as many makeovers as Clayface. From Golden Age criminal mastermind to shape-shifting tragic monster, the character has been stretched, squashed, rebooted, and reimagined into more continuities than anyone really needs to keep track of. This week we’re digging into Clayface (2026), the latest DC Universe entry directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan. Leading the conversation are Jill and Quinny, who actually managed to see the film, while Dion found himself in the rare and uncomfortable position of interrogating a movie he didn’t get to watch. This has definitely never happened before and surely will never happen again. *Wink* But we’re not stopping with the new movie. We also look back to one of the greatest interpretations of the character ever put on screen: Batman: The Animated Series and its classic two-part episode,”Feat of Clay.” We’ll explore why the animated series still casts such a long shadow over Batman adaptations, and ask whether some stories really need another reboot. As if that wasn’t enough sticky comic-book goo to wade through, we also tackle one of fandom’s eternal debates: shared comic universes. Are interconnected universes a storytelling miracle? A continuity nightmare? Or a giant corkboard linked together with red string and increasingly desperate wiki editors? The answer is probably “yes.” So, does Clayface successfully mould itself into the new DC Universe? Or is Feat of Clay still the gold standard? There’s only one way to find out.     Street Fighter and Whalefall Hadouken your expectations into the nearest wall, because Street Fighter is back on the big screen for its third live-action round. From the gloriously over-the-top 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme cult classic, through the somewhat-less-remembered (and widley reviled) Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Capcom’s legendary button-mashing franchise has spent decades trying to land the perfect cinematic combo. Yet, like any fighting game veteran, it just keeps hitting “Continue?” and jumping back into the arena. This time, Street Fighter (2026) is directed by Kitao Sakurai and features a roster packed with familiar faces including Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Jason Momoa, Cody Rhodes, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, 50 Cent, and **Eric André. The story follows Chun-Li assembling a team of fighters to enter the World Warrior tournament and confront the villainous M. Bison. What follows is a film featuring martial arts, impossible hair, questionable life choices, and enough iconic characters to start a licensing lawyer convention. Whether this latest adaptation lands a perfect combo or accidentally punches itself in the face is exactly the sort of thing we discuss so you don’t have to spend hours arguing with strangers online. Joining the fight are Jill, Dion, and Quinny, armed with their usual blend of obscure movie knowledge, video game special moves, and deeply scientific analysis methods (which may or may not involve the amount of beers provided at the press screening).     TPToA Podcast 465 – Digger

    Digger What do you get when an Oscar-winning auteur decides to dig a giant hole through environmental collapse, capitalist excess, and the very nature of performance itself? This week we’re shoveling into Digger (2026), the wildly ambitious (and intensely divisive) new satire from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the filmmaker behind Birdman and The Revenant. Starring Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, an ageing oil magnate whose actions help unleash an ecological catastrophe, the film blends environmental anxiety, political satire, and theatre in ways that are… a BIG SWING. Alongside a heavyweight cast including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, and Jesse Plemons, the film asks big questions about power, responsibility, and whether the people causing the problem can ever be trusted to save us from it. For Dion and Quinny, the real question is whether Iñárritu’s highly theatrical, self-aware approach manages to elevate the story, or whether it disappears up it’s own drill-hole. And perhaps the biggest question of all: is Tom Cruise, one of cinema’s most famous blockbuster icons, the right person to front a film that takes aim at capitalism, corporate power, and environmental destruction? From the groundbreaking mix of animation and live action in films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit to the nostalgia-fuelled chaos of Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers (with Cool World sitting awkwardly in the corner), Hollywood has repeatedly asked the important question: “What if humans shared the world with cartoon characters?” This week, that tradition continues with Coyote vs. ACME, the long-awaited (and almost entirely shelved) courtroom comedy that finally lets Wile E.     The Periodic Table of Awesome podcast - Resident Evil

    Resident Evil (2026) Few franchises have endured as many outbreaks, reboots, mutations, and corporate cover-ups as Resident Evil. What started as Capcom‘s groundbreaking (and genre defining) 1996 survival-horror video game became a multimedia juggernaut, spawning countless sequels, remakes, spin-offs, comics, toys, novels, and a long-running film series (technically two!) that has spent more than two decades proving that Umbrella’s OH&S department is really, REALLY shit. The 2026 reboot takes the franchise back to its horror roots. Directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, the film follows an unfortunate courier whose routine delivery turns into a very bad night in Raccoon City. There are infected creatures, shady science, frantic survival, and plenty of knowing game references. This episode sees Dion and Jill attempting the improbable: convincing Quinny that Resident Evil (2026) deserves a second trip to the cinema (there’s a story there). Along the way they’ll discover if this is the adaptation Resident Evil fans have been waiting for, or just another mutated experiment from Umbrella Corp.     The Periodic Table of Awesome podcast - Mayday

    Mayday The Cold War gave us many things: geopolitical tension, endless spy stories, and some of the coolest aircraft ever to tear across the sky at ridiculous speeds. This week we’re strapping into the cockpit of Mayday (2026), Apple TV+‘s Cold War action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. And yes, any excuse to talk about the legendary SR-71 Blackbird is a good one. (We know the movie says Blackbird, but don’t let that stop Quinny from accidentally calling it the “Nightbird” at least once.) Set against the backdrop of 1980s East-West tensions, Mayday follows hotshot Navy pilot Troy “Assassin” Kelly (Ryan Reynolds) after a top-secret mission goes spectacularly sideways, leaving him stranded deep in Soviet territory.     The Periodic Table of Awesome podcast - Lanterns

    Lanterns (HBO) This episode, we fly into the first two episodes of Lanterns, HBO’s ambitious new DC mystery series that takes one of comics’ oldest cosmic institutions and creates the construct of: “What if intergalactic space cops were dropped into the middle of True Detective?” Starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Lanterns follows the veteran Green Lantern and his new recruit partner as they investigate a mystery that may be bigger, stranger, and more alien than it first appears. Whether the series is destined to join the ranks of great comic book adaptations or end up floating through deep space with abandoned storylines, you’ll have to wait week by week and find out like the rest of us. The Green Lantern mythos stretches back to 1940, has spawned multiple Lantern Corps, plenty of emotional-spectrum chaos, and enough continuity rewrites to power a ring for centuries. Naturally, we take the scenic route through that history while unpacking what the show’s opening episodes are building toward.
