    Lucky people aren't lucky. They just have more surface area. Sahil Bloom calls this Luck Surface Area. We think luck is random, something that happens to us. But luck is mostly the result of thousands of tiny actions. Your daily habits put you in positions where luck is more likely to strike. If you never leave your house, never share your work, never start conversations, you have a tiny luck surface area. Almost nothing can land on it. But if you're constantly putting yourself out there — talking to people, shipping ideas, showing up in rooms where things happen — you've expanded that surface. More things can hit. Serena Williams said it: "Luck has nothing to do with it, because I have spent many, many hours, countless hours, on the court working for my one moment in time, not knowing when it would come." She wasn't waiting for luck. She was building surface area. You can't control when luck strikes. But you can control how big a target you give it. Every conversation you start. Every idea you share. Every room you walk into. That's surface area. The people who seem lucky? They've just been expanding theirs longer than you've been watching.

    Seth Godin on Ideas

    Consensus isn't validation. Good ideas create tension. They challenge what people already believe. They force a reaction because they can't be ignored. Seth Godin put it this way in Purple Cow: "If you're remarkable, it's likely that some people won't like you. That's part of the definition of remarkable. Nobody gets unanimous praise — ever. The best the timid can hope for is to be unnoticed. Criticism comes to those who stand out." He also wrote something I keep coming back to: "Tension is the feeling we experience just before we grow." We avoid it instinctively. But tension is what changes us. It's what makes an idea stick. If everyone in the room agrees with your idea immediately, you probably haven't pushed far enough. Or people are checked out. Or they don't feel safe to disagree. Instant consensus isn't validation... it's a warning sign. Safe ideas don't spread. The uncomfortable ones do.

    Tim Urban on Ideas

    Your best ideas don't have deadlines. That's why they never happen. Tim Urban calls it the Instant Gratification Monkey. There's a part of your brain that only knows two things: easy and fun. And whenever you sit down to work on something hard, the monkey grabs the wheel. "Let's check email first. Let's scroll for a minute. Let's see who would win in a fight between a lion and a tiger." The only thing that scares the monkey is the Panic Monster. He shows up when deadlines loom. Suddenly you can focus. Suddenly the work gets done. But most of our best ideas don't have deadlines. No one is forcing you to start that project. Write that thing. Build that business. Launch that community. So the monkey wins. Forever. Procrastination isn't laziness. It's a battle happening inside your head. And the ideas that matter most — the ones only you can bring to life — are the ones with no deadline to save you.

    Most leaders want a clean, 10-step plan. Tufan Erginbilgiç, the CEO of Rolls-Royce, wants a mess. Since taking over in 2023, Erginbilgiç has overseen a massive surge in profits and a doubling of stock value. His secret? He likes strategy development to be chaotic. He isn't talking about being reckless. He’s talking about the raw, blue-sky debate that happens before a plan is ever written. Most of us avoid the mess; we want predictable outcomes. But Erginbilgiç argues that if you’re comfortable, you’re not transforming. The discomfort and the "chaos" of disagreement are actually the signs that you’re in uncharted territory—which is the only place real transformation happens. Strategy isn't about organizing what you already know (that’s just planning). It’s about having the guts to sit in the discomfort until you can make the hard choices about what you don't know.

    Jane Jacobs on Ideas

    When you over-plan, you kill the thing you're trying to build. Jane Jacobs wasn't an urban planner. She was a journalist who noticed something the experts missed. The neighborhoods that thrived weren't the ones designed from the top down. They were the messy ones. Mixed uses. Short blocks. Old buildings next to new ones. People bumping into each other on the street. She called it "the sidewalk ballet." An intricate dance of people coming and going, shopkeepers and strangers, each playing their part without anyone choreographing it. "Designing a dream city is easy; rebuilding a living one takes imagination." The order wasn't designed. It emerged. That's the paradox. When you try to control every variable, you end up with something sterile. Something that looks right on paper but feels dead in practice. Ideas work the same way. We're taught they need structure. A clear roadmap. But the best ideas need room to collide. They need the random conversation that sparks something you never would have thought of alone. The mess isn't the problem. The mess is where the good stuff happens.

    Adam Grant on Ideas

    The most creative people don't have better ideas. They just have more of them. Adam Grant's book Originals flipped how I think about this. He writes: "It's widely assumed that there's a tradeoff between quantity and quality — if you want to do better work, you have to do less of it. This turns out to be false. When it comes to idea generation, quantity is the most predictable path to quality." The people with the best ideas aren't the ones with a higher hit rate. They just produce more. They're willing to be wrong more often, which means they eventually stumble onto something right. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. A lot of them weren't great. Picasso created over 50,000 works. Edison filed over 1,000 patents. The volume is the strategy. Most of us hold back because we're not sure our idea is good enough. We wait until we're confident. But originals don't wait for certainty. They generate, share, test, and iterate. The bad ideas are the price of admission for the good ones.
