Ignite the Change

Bushra

I created the "Ignite the Change" podcast to focus on the career journey of an everyday mental health practitioner. As a Muslim, Pakistani-American, and as a daughter of immigrants, I never quite realized the impact various parts of my identity would have on the mental health field and the clients that I see. The story of how a clinician found comfort in the therapist chair can be one of resilience, perseverance, and determination. My hope is that by sharing our stories, it inspires people just like you, just like me, to change the face of mental health treatment.

As an Indian immigrant, Vinita understands how culture impacts the South Asian woman. Her coaching business helps these women navigate their lives in a more meaningful way. Vinita also shines as a school psychologist. There's so much goodness in this episode, and I cannot wait for you all to hear it! Here are some key takeaways: A large part of our jobs as psychologists and master level mental health clinicians is to research. We may not like it, but we need to be consumers of it. Our clients will appreciate it, and we will be better at our jobs because of it. AND. Clients appreciate the science!!You can be South Asian, AND have supportive parents. There's a lot of negativity about the immigrant and/or South Asian parent. Vinita shares how her parents, born and raised in India, were supportive of her decision to pursue mental health. If you're looking for some "feels," you need to listen to that part of our convo! To become a psychologist, requires a doctorate degree. Vinita did her undergraduate and master's degree from Loyola University and her doctorate at Northern Illinois University.Your priorities should align with your values. You can make time for it all - but you have to be ok with being flexible, too
