    Seeing the Whole Band with Emma Pope

    In this first episode of season two, Pastor William Sabiston follows Sunrise Preschool Director Emma Pope into her past to explore God’s presence and influence on her life. Stories from her impressive career and family life allow all of us to consider how God abides with us in all things, and how we don’t have to be perfect to do God’s perfect work. Through reflections on scripture and overlapping childhood experiences, these two friends and colleagues discuss how the limitations of our individual perspectives are the best encouragement to rely on the infinite wisdom of God.

    Appalachia Service Project

    Founded in 1969, the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), has been helping people recover after natural disasters and build and rebuild sustainable homes to eradicate substandard housing in Central Appalachia for over 50 years. A team of youth and adults from Sunrise UMC spent a week working with ASP in Tennessee, where the devastation of 2024’s Hurricane Helene remains unresolved. Amidst the hardship and loss though, our team witnessed the hope and resolve of those affected, and ASP’s aim to “accept people right where they are and just the way they are” made a lasting impression. After their return home, our students and leaders joined together again to reflect on the jokes, teamwork, and spiritual growth they shared over the course of their week in the mountains.     “The holy spirit and a cup of coffee,” that’s all pastors have when they begin crafting a sermon. In this final episode of our four-part series, we invite you to explore scripture with wonder and curiosity just as our pastors do. Our guest, Pastor Lucas Nelson of Pittsboro UMC, sat down with Pastor William Sabiston and they dug into a vivid passage from Ezekiel, chapter 37:1-14. With no preparation, these friends and colleagues discussed the valley of dry bones and what it has to say about grief, transformation and hope. Through vulnerable stories and challenging questions, these pastors show us how we can all approach scripture with wonder and curiosity. Within Paul’s writing, these two friends and pastors explore several different themes like timing, transformation, the ever-evolving challenge of temptation, and the true meaning of patience.     Play Nice and Share featuring Fred Sievert

    Fred Sievert had established a hugely successful career, working his way up to President at New York Life Insurance, when he decided, in his 50s, to retire and head to divinity school. This rock solid devotion to God's guidance led Fred to publish three books, all containing stories and wisdom from a lifetime spent building and strengthening his faith. In this episode, Pastor William Sabiston asks Fred about his priorities and values, his experience with miraculous medical recovery, and how he lives into that first day of school adage, "play nice with the other kids and don't forget to share!"
