    Dance Revolution: The Crooked Road

    In Common and Virginia Folklife join Tyler Hughes and Gina Dilg on a tour of three stops on The Crooked Road: Virginia's Heritage Music Trail. From the Fries Theatre, to Lay's Hardware in Coeburn, and then the Blacksburg Square Dance, we get a taste of flatfoot, clogging, old-time music, square dance, and perhaps our favorite--the cake walk.This episode is part of Dance Revolution, a limited series featuring dance groups from across Virginia. Dance Revolution asks if moving together, with joy, might be exactly the revolution we need now.Dance Revolution is the result of a year-long partnership between Virginia Folklife and five community dance groups that each tell a different side of Virginia’s story: • Red Crook-ed Sky, Intertribal Native American dance in Hampton Roads• The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, regular flatfoot, clogging, and square dances in Fries, Coeburn, and Blacksburg• Semilla Cultural, Puerto Rican bomba and plena dance in Fredericksburg• Positive Force Line Steppaz, soul line dance in Buckingham County• Thapasya School of Dance, bharatanatyam, South Indian classical dance in AshburnDance Revolution is part of By the People: Conversations Beyond 250, a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. The initiative was developed by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
