    Maria Colomer Canyelles l The Painter's Room I #InFocus

Today we’re zooming in on Kærshovedgård, a prison-turned-deportation centre in Denmark. It is one of two deportation centres in the country used to house rejected asylum seekers who have not agreed to voluntary return, as well as persons with so-called ‘tolerated stay’ (tålt ophold) status. Many of them stay there for interminable periods of time. In this episode, FairPlanet's Nour Ghantous sat down with director Maria Colomer Canyelles, who gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of her documentary ”the Painter’s Room,” the first ever to be filmed inside a deportation centre. The film follows the stories of two detainees, Artin, a young Iranian bodybuilder, and Jahan, a Kurdish man who has recently discovered his love for painting. Despite their seemingly hopeless future, they find ways to bring hope to their lives and to the people around them. “I hope it contributes to removing fear from our conversation,” Colomer Canyelles told FairPlanet. “There is a lot of fear in regards to the people who live in Kærshovedgård. The neighbours are scared of them. A big part of Danish society is scared of them. All over Europe, I think we're scared of people who live in deportation centres. When you get to know who these people are, we remember that these people are humans with stories like ours, with families, with needs.” How can you take action? Black Lives Matter Denmark on Instagram - Black Lives Matter in DK has been supporting people in the centre. Trampolin Huset on Instagram - Trampolin Huset supports asylum seekers and refugees in DK. Mark Verkerk I Planet Soil l #InFocus

WATCH THE FULL DOCUMENTARY VIA LINK BELOW 👇 https://www.docswithimpact.com/en/art... Welcome back to In Focus! Today’s story has “a tremendous amount of good news in it,” as film director Mark Verkerk, our podcast guest, put it. “Something you don’t come across so often at the moment in the environmental sphere.” The incredible piece we are discussing in this episode is his latest documentary “Planet Soil.” This groundbreaking film enables you to take a (really) close look at the vital, yet often overlooked, world beneath our feet. As the Planet Soil team had Microphotographer Wim van Egmond on board, they were even able to capture living organisms that are invisible to the naked eye. They also do an excellent job at drawing a clear link between this microbiome beneath our feet to life above ground. “This idea of, you know, connection with nature is not a sort of poetic metaphor or something. It’s a scientific reality.” With more living creatures in a teaspoon of soil than there are people on Earth, this ecosystem is crucial for sustaining life on our planet. Planet Soil teaches us about the immense potential and resilience of soil organisms, while providing tangible solutions to improve soil health, combat climate change and enhance food security. From a patch of grass and microscopic timelapses of literal growing fungi to a fruitful harvest and joyful feast, this documentary packs it all! And there is more good news! Through our collaboration you have the chance to watch this incredible fusion of art and science at a discount. Dig into the Underground via the link below 👇 https://www.docswithimpact.com/en/art...
