Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon, charity law specialists talk to Rory about what prompted him to become a trustee and chair of Hull4Heroes. Rory speaks about his role as Chair and how he supports the Charity’s team to navigate the Charity’s challenges and opportunities. Rory explains the positive impact Hull4Heroes’ services have upon enabling veterans and their families transition to civilian life and to access the support they need when they leave the armed forces. We discuss the significance of having a ‘one-stop shop’ or ‘single point of contact’ and the vital role of the Charity’s Armed Forces Mobile Outreach Unit in providing welfare services to veterans, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Rory also talks about the opportunities presented by the VALOUR project. Rory draws upon his role as a non-executive director at J.R. Rix & Sons to bring a great depth of experience and knowledge to his role as Chair of a dynamic and growing Charity. Rory gives some great advice to charity trustees and Chairs and his approach to his role at Hull4Heroes.

Lisa took her exciting approach to learning and developed an engaging programme to deliver education in fascinating settings. Also finding out about how the stadium and airport operates, not only the pilots and the plane, but the behind the scenes including the catering, the retail, and the operational controls. All of which opens young people’s eyes to different careers options. A bus has also been ‘wrapped’ with Run With It’s branding to help raise awareness of the charity and its profile. All fantastic fun, but serious about learning and increasing young people’s life chances. Lisa’s journey from creating a new charity to growing it is inspirational, and her energy and enthusiasm are infectious. It was a privilege to spend time with Lisa on our podcast.

Olly also has a unique insight into the charity having previously been an employee of Tigers Trust and took part in the charity’s workshops when he was at school. Olly has a holistic view of the charity and its mission. Trustee boards are sometimes criticised by the charity’s employees, service users, and volunteers for appearing disconnected or remote. Over time the board can also become perceived by those working on the ground as a barrier to getting thework done. Olly talks about how to build strong working relationships between the trustees and the charity’s staff and volunteers and about how he made the transition to charity trustee at a young age.
