The Hidden Danger of Your Thoughts ~ How Negativity Fuels Inflammation and Illness

One of the emerging fields of science is Psychoneuroimmunology. This can be broken down into: Mind + Nervous System + Immunology (psychology) + (neuroscience) + (immune system) When we have negative thoughts, our body produces a protein called a cytokine. Cytokines are small proteins that act as messengers, signaling the body—often targeting specific organs. These proteins are responsible for triggering inflammation. Chronic inflammation can lead to various health issues, including disease, cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. Incredibly, this entire process can begin with just a single thought. Negative thinking can put the body into a state of attack, inflaming the very systems that sustain life. So, how are you thinking throughout your day? What “Shape” Are You In When It Comes to Your Emotions? Here’s How to Find Out

Emotional recovery is the process we go through when we’re triggered. It involves noticing the emotion, feeling it, and then coming back to a state of balance. In this episode, I wanted to draw a comparison between emotional recovery and physical exercise. When it comes to physical fitness, we often gauge our condition by how quickly we recover. For example, if you run to the top of a hill, how long does it take for your breath to settle? There’s bound to be some huffing and puffing, but the duration of that recovery tells a story. The same idea applies to emotional triggers. How long does it take for you to recover from being triggered? Are you still carrying it 48 hours later? Are you giving your partner the silent treatment because your nervous system is stuck in shutdown mode? So, what emotional “shape” are you in? Nocebo Effect ~ Change What You Believe or it Will Become Manifest

The opposite of the placebo effect is the nocebo effect—a lot less fun than its counterpart. With the placebo effect, we can tell someone something positive, and their belief often leads to beneficial outcomes. For instance, giving a patient a sugar pill while telling them it will cure their ailment often leads to improvements, even though the pill contains no active medicine. The nocebo effect works in a similar way but with negative consequences. Many of us have heard stories about people who were told they had only two weeks to live, and tragically, they passed away exactly within that timeframe. Dr. Bruce Lipton shares a powerful example in his book Biology of Belief. In the 1970s, a man was diagnosed with throat cancer and told he had just months to live. True to the prognosis, he passed away within that period. However, an autopsy later revealed there was no cancer at all—it had been a misdiagnosis. This begs the question: where in your life might you be believing something that isn’t true? Are you creating your own nocebo effect by accepting a false diagnosis or negative belief about yourself?
