Insecurities about Language is about my journey with learning a new language and tackling the death of language within families. I will have many conversations with those on the same journey, from teachers, from those teaching their kids, and really anyone who wants to have a conversation about language! And tackling Insecurities. This podcast is for people who are learning a new language, who want to learn a language, and people who grew up speaking a language but forgot it. Ricks, a Christian wife, Worldschooling mom, and a nomadic chef. Teaching for over 25 years, she has been a Montessorian since her own preschool days. She holds Montessori teaching certifications for guiding children from infancy through elementary. She has cooked professionally, in restaurants, commercial kitchens, and private homes on four different continents over the last decade. After 10 years of teaching in central Japan, where Karen founded and operated her own international Montessori school, she sold it all to begin a nomadic life of full-time travel with her family. Karen spreads her message of embracing a Slow Food Lifestyle, a lifelong love of learning, and education for peace by teaching people of all ages how to cook for themselves and why they need to share that gift with those they love.     Insecurities about Language: The Death of Language within Greta's Family

    Welcome Language Learners to the Insecurities about Language podcast: The Death of Language and to an exciting topic I am tackling called the Death of Language...within families! In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Greta Rodney Thompson, born and raised up on the island of St. Martin, the smallest mass of land to be divided into two countries. She considers herself a true St. Martiner with all the benefits of a multi-cultural upbringing, but also cultural confusion that comes along with being in an environment but not necessarily feeling a part of it. Her maternal side of the family is French and a significant portion moved to Guadeloupe and France. From a very early age Greta realized that there was a disconnect in that she was a part of this family but not able to communicate using the language. Greta decided to make it her goal to improve her French language skills to reconnect with family and inherently learn more about herself. The journey is still ongoing but has led to many gains socially and professionally. Greta is working on bringing more awareness to others about the benefits of multilingualism by sharing stories of others who are bilingual or multilingual and encouraging bilingual education. She does this through her YouTube, Facebook and Instagram page called The Linguistic Isle.  She also works with an association called Les Pepites which promotes culture, education and communication in the community.     Welcome Language Learners to Part 2 of the Death of Language Compilation! What does the death of language within families mean to you? And you may think that this is an obvious question, or you’re like what does she mean or what does she want to hear, or maybe you have to think about it for a moment, and really there is no right or wrong answer to this question. Really the question is to get you to think about yourself, your family, someone you know, the language and culture and the immersion of that or maybe the literal death of language. The languages that are dying because it’s not being passed down from generation to generation, not being taught, spoken, not being recognized. The death of language came from me deciding what I wanted to do with this podcast and having conversations with my mom and thinking about how diverse we are and how like we don’t speak no other language besides English. And so, I have 2 main questions that come from this topic, it’s WHAT HAPPENED? And WHY?     January Update

    Welcome back! It is SEASON 2 YALL! I am your host Alexandria of the Insecurities about Language Podcast. And this season I will continue to talk about individual language journeys, especially mine since I failed to do that last year. I will be diving more into the Death of Language within families and getting my family involved, so ya’ll can hear more about their stories. I will be interviewing folks about Bilingualism and Linguistic and those topics will be little mini-series within this season! and of course anyone who wants to have a conversation about language and what it means to them and how it relates to their life. I also want to invite those who would like to answer the question: WHAT DOES THE DEATH OF LANGUAGE WITHIN FAMILIES MEAN TO YOU? There will be a link in the show notes for you to provide your answer. For this episode, I will talk about my goals, and if you have been following me on IG during January you would’ve noticed that I’ve been doing this 30 day speaking challenge from my online PT program. I’ll talk about how it went and what those results came to be! The GOALS are pretty straightforward, I don’t want to overcomplicate it, especially since I'm just getting back into it… 1. I will be doing monthly updates on my progress, and it will involve some speaking in Portuguese. 2. I want to document what I’m using and how I’m using it. 3. I want to start reading, probably will start in April 2023. 4. I’d love to do a day in my life type of podcast… (said it was 5th on the podcast lol) 5. I’d love to have one podcast interview in Portuguese and of course it’ll be easy enough for me to get through. - What topics would you want to hear in Portuguese? 6.     Hey Language Learners! Welcome back to the last episode of season 1, and another amazing interview about Insecurities about Language. In this episode, I spoke with Marcus from Louisiana. He’s a polyglot and currently live in Pamplona, Spain, the place of the famous running of the bulls. He studied both Psychology (Bachelor’s) and Linguistics (Master’s). He has a unique interest in minority language because he is a minority language speaker. His hope is to preserve them and help them gain speakers before they are all gone. You’ll hear Marcus speak about his background with language learning and his family as well. He lets us know what a minority language is, its importance and benefits. He talks about his minority language, its geographical location, a little history lesson on the Basque language and its evolution. He also talks about how to maintain a minority language. Marcus mentions language isolates. In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jacqueline S. Sadberry, a small-town girl hailing from Texas. She is a poet, self-published author, and passionate language lover. Between studying Japanese, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, and writing her second novel, she also assists people with becoming conversational in Spanish, Japanese and English.
