Karting Around America - Part One

Show #88 June 22, 2009 Local Florida short track racing news update followed by three stellar example of the success of KART racing in America. Rohn Moon Many-time WKA National Champion, and arguably Florida's most successful oval karter in history. Rohn accomplished the impossible in 2001, capturing FOUR national titles with the highly-competitive WKA Briggs and Stratton National Dirt Series. Rohn also won many, many races at the worlds largest karting event, the annual Dirt Track World Championships at Municipal Stadium, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Simply making the "A" main was an accomplishment, and Rohn was a dominating force at the Stadium for many years in his feared black #56. Dave Evans Is a 65 year old resident of St. Petersburg, Florida. As a young boy in the late 50's, Dave and his father would frequent the infamous Raceway Park near Chicago, where Dave would cheer on one of the winningest drivers of all time, Bud Koehler. In 1960, Dave was just becoming interested in karting, when he happened to become the 10,000th member of the Grand Prix Kart Club of America. This earned him a new kart from Putt-Nik karting and a place on the team (expenses paid) to race in Nassau Bahamas for the international kart race! Almost 50 years later, Dave is still karting, competing in the TAG Master class with the Florida Karting Championship Series, with no plans of quitting any time soon! Dave proudly displays Bud Koehler's #77 on his kart today, as a tribute to his boyhood hero. Darrell Legg Florida's most "diversified" karting promoter, Darrell is unique in Florida karting, in that he is currently operating both a local karting-only facility (Hurricane Speedway in Cocoa, FL), and a series that races at an existing Stock Car track (Central Florida Oval Series). Darrell will discuss his decision to change Hurricane Speedway from pavement to dirt (he laid dirt down on top of the asphalt), share a few of the innovative activities he and wife Mindy have scheduled at their facilities, and talk about the upcoming Florida Dirt Divisional Series (FDDS) state race on July 11 at Hurricane Speedway.

Florida Racing's HOTTEST news Dirt & Asphalt

Show #85 - May 18, 2009 Dave Westerman brings fans an update on Volusia Speedway Park and Orlando Speedworld and speaks about some recent racin' controversies and plans to broadcast VSP races on Internet TV. Christian Augspurger is the youngest dirt late model racer in the Sunshine State, and he is beginning to get some real confidence racing with his heroes. Justin Ellison talks about the upcoming City Boys 100 at Columbia Motorsports Park. Finally a race for just regular "city folks". Joe Lewandoski with the weekly FASCAR update. Imagine 12 street cars doing five caution free laps on the high banks of New Smyrna, passing all the time. Joe explains! No doubt one of the most successful touring series in Florida is the DeSoto Champ Karts, the creation of Phil Harp and helped immensely by Mike Portman and others. Phil tells the story. Todd Hutto previews the upcoming Scott Thompson Memorial on May 23 at East Bay Raceway Park. Todd was as close as anyone to one of Florida dirt racing's most popular drivers. David Augspurger has been helping hands-on creating the new Hendry County Motorsports Park. As David explains, when the track opens July 18 the only thing the same will be the location. Everything else will be different as drivers prepare to race on "Everglades Clay" for the first time. Drew Brannon held of a hard charging Landon Cassill to win his first ASA Challenge race by 4/10ths of a second. Steve Carlson finished third and Eddie Hoffman was fourth in the 150-mile event at the Milwaukee Mile. It is Brannon’s fourth ASA Late Model win of the young season and his seventh feature victory already in 2009. Congratulations Drew. Next Week: Lake Speed won the International Karting Federation (IKF) National Championship six times and in 1978 he won the prestigious Karting World Championship over among others, future Formula One legend and icon Ayrton Senna. As of 2009, Speed is the only American to win the championship. Also 6-time United States Karting champion. Lake ran in 402 NASCAR WINSTON CUP races run over 19 years, won at Darlignton in 1988, had 75 top tens.
